Down in the USA, they've had court challenges, protests, vandalism of cameras, and politicians who supported them have been booted from office.

ARE WE CANADIANS GOING TO PUT UP WITH THIS CRAP? ALLOW THE RAPACIOUS GOVERNMENT TO THIEF OUR HARD-EARNED CASH IN THE NAME OF DUBIOUS, IF NOT NON-EXISTENT, SAFETY BENEFITS????

Probably...yes, we are. :fruit:

In my area, a few have been removed. But, most remain. They have only modified the rules in which they can issue tickets. For instance, they will not write tickets for a right turn on red.
One night, the front of my car crossed the stop line before coming to a complete stop in the right turn lane. I saw the flash. I sat there then waiting for the green light. I saw a second flash. I then knew that there would be two pictures of me stopped at the light and hoped that I wouldn't receive a ticket. To date, I haven't received one.

Yeap my son was driving my Step dad to the Hospital and he broke the light. Needless to say they got a ticket, took it to court and had the charge reduced.

Pay a lawyer to fight it. The harder people fight, the less profitable it is, the more likely they will be removed.

that would work, but at the expense that if you fight it, they pin the ticket to a driver...and then the insurance goes up if the ticket goes through even if it's reduced...whereas if you just pay it off straight, then it's just a one-time thing and insurance will stay the same...

I got one off of a right turn a few months back..needless to say i was not happy about it -_- but I learn to take 'extra' precaution around traffic lights that have red light cmaeras now.

Footman 11-09-2010 04:01 PM

Is there a website that shows all red-light traffic camera intersections in the GTA area?>

... stupid Steeles and Hilda camera :cussing:

Neo 11-10-2010 05:39 PM

I can't believe we still have that going on... its ridiculous!
I've seen so many people try to fight these tickets. And they're always thrown out. No way to make it stick legitimately.

Yet another cash grab.

alnielsen 11-10-2010 06:17 PM

In the States, they are a civil offense rather than a criminal offense. This means no trial by judge/jury. If you want to contest this kind of ticket you go before a hearing officer and you will loose. The only other way to contest the ticket is to sue the jurisdiction that issued it.

That's not entirely true.

It's true they are a civil offense, which is an unethical Constitutional dodge around Article VI of the Bill of Rights so they don't have to present a witness and prove you were driving. They made it civil, like a parking ticket: Your car was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It is not true that you will "loose". Many people have won, not only by suing the jurisdiction, but by attacking the premises of the ticket directly. If you don't fight it, the Kleptocrats always win. If you fight it, sometimes they might lose. There are some good articles here: http://www.motorists.org/red-light-cameras/

If you want to get rid of the cameras, you have to fight, and join with others who fight. In the US, join the National Motorists Association. They are the people who were instrumental in eliminating the unconstitutional National Maximum Speed Law (55) in the 80's.

No, if your car is past the first line before the light turns red, you're legally in the intersection and wont get ticketed. Only if you pass the line after the light turns red you will get a very expensive picture.

graceeB 09-21-2012 04:37 AM

Certainly, that would somehow work, but as what you have said you might receive a ticket for not following it. Apparently, speed cameras and by extension, red light cameras, aren't popular. Most individuals who take this for granted, get ticket by generally have earned it through ignoring the law. However, that hasn't kept them from resenting the presence of the machines, which has led to numerous occurrences of speed camera vandalism. Thus, only imply Governments are fighting back against speed camera vandalism.

My little Tom Tom (about $120) warns me of red light cameras I'm approaching.
Maps and locations are updated frequently through the web site.

Which TomTom model have you got? I had a Blackberry app that was supposed to integrate with maps, and notify you of cameras. Never seemed to work as described though.

What about plate covers that look benign, but prevent photos? (I know they're technically illegal, but if they look benign to the naked eye, then what's the harm right? :P )

Mazda_RX804 09-22-2012 04:32 PM

red light camera is 0 points cause they cant see whos driving, i just paid the fine, you will pay a lawyer more to fight it. It also shows the speed you were driving when you ran it. So if you were speeding, no point.

olddragger 09-22-2012 08:05 PM

no point my ass. The next step will be GPS issued speeding tickets.
Or cars that drive themselves.

You don't get it. It's not about catching you for speeding or runnng a light.
It's about revenue generation.
It's about taxing you in such a way that you don't fight it because it's cheaper than fighting.

Read and learn:
Objections To Red Light Cameras | NMA
Objections To Speed Cameras | NMA

It hasn't reach this point yet, but failure to display a license plate is only a $40 no-points ticket, so long as the car is actually registered.
Where I live one is far less likely to get a ticket for that than to be caught by a red light or speed camera.

I anticipate within the next five years I'm going to stop displaying license plates alltogether. I already don't display a front plate and have only gotten 4 tickets in the last 15 years.

We have the 4.3" model with lifetime map updates... Good deals come up now and then.

climacus 09-27-2012 02:37 PM

From what I understand, the majority of tickets are actually issued for right turns under red. Always do the 3 seconds stop before making a right turn at ghetto intersections.
