Ran over garbage bag...

So as I was heading down Crowchild Trail yesterday...I ran over a huge garbage bag that got blown into the road; mind you it was a hellah windy day. I tried to dodge it by positioning the car to run over it with my tire, but I couldn't and the bag ended up under my car.

After, I knew I was screwd because it didn't come back out from under, I quickly pulled over at the next block. There it was under the car and stuck to the gearbox case (and differential?). I ripped off what I could (the rest was stuck and melted on already) and continued on thinking the left over bits would burn/melt off.

So now I'm stuck with a burning plastic smell surrounding my car...Any suggestions? I can see that there are leftover bits melted to the gearbox case right now, the pieces stuck to the differential are all gone I think. I booked an appointment to get a rattle checked at Sunridge, do you think they will charge me to get them to clean it off from under the car??

P.S. before anyone asks why I didn't lane change or brake and wait to change...It was going down a hill with cars on the left side of me, and a dumbass tailgating me, so there was no way I could have avoided it...

make sure that it did not get wraped up i the output shaft seal.. look at the front of the driveshaft. and make sure it is clear. sometimes it can wrap around and take out the seal...

as to the exhaust.... pull as much off as you can... and it just sucks for a while.... i caught a small bag on my back pipe... it was about 3 weeks before the smell went away..

beers

I know what you mean...

I got out of my car today and people around me were staring at me because the car smelled like burning rubber.

I had the same problem, I ran over a small clear plastic bag (covenience store style). on a local street and it wrapped around my exhaust pipe. The smell and blue smoke from it melting went away after about 1 week. I ripped off what I could, and scrapped off some with some wood in my garage.

Most people find that the smell tends to go away after 2-3 weeks. Also depends on what was in the bag...

Yup, took me about 2 weeks to get rid of the burning plastic smell after I got a plastic bag caught in the exhaust

anyway that a service dept can clean it off?

axsym911 08-02-2006 01:11 PM

Dang! this seems to happen alot. Do other cars suck up trash and burn it? Whew!

LiTTleRX-8 08-02-2006 01:29 PM

First time this incident has occured to me, usually I am able to dodge it.

The service department can clean it off, but the question is wether they will charge you or not...

YT1300 08-02-2006 05:04 PM

They can, but it takes time (your exhaust system has to cool a bit before they can go to town on the mess) and it's a pain. They're probably going to charge you, unless they owe you for something else...

"I ran over a small clear plastic bag (covenience store style). on a local street and it wrapped around my exhaust pipe. "

Just another reason that I sincerely hope people will start:

- refusing a bag at the checkout when they can quite clearly carry the item(s) without a bag

- bring their own - prefereably reusable cloth - bag to the store

- stop the f-ing littering!
