Quebec plate if I live in Ontario

Hi,

I currently live in Ontario, and therefore have an Ontario plate on my car. For certain reasons, including the fact that Quebec does not require a front license plate, I would like to get a Quebec license plate.

Is this possible if I reside in Ontario?? What exactly is the process?

One of my good friends resides in Montreal, could he do it for me?

Thanks!!

The car would have to be registered in Quebec. It may be as simple as having a PO Box as a mailing address or might not. Let me know would you?

Keep in mind that if registering your car in Quebec will remain in your vehicle's history report, which may or may not be a good thing if you decide to get a new car...

(obviously you'd only sell your rx8 for an R3 right? Or the new rx7 if it comes back)

I also heard rumors that if you get crap from the cops if you're tagged with a drivers license not corresponding to your vehicle registration.. need people to verify that though...

That being said, I've seen numerous Ontario cars without a front plate... so if you want to take your chances it might be the easier way to go...

(Disclaimer: I do not support going plate-less, and I do not have full knowledge of the law... so don't shoot me...)

that means you have to get Quebec insurance as well...

Which is not a bad thing, cheaper for sure :) Maybe that's what OP wants, he's just shy to ask "how to get cheap quebec insurance" :)

That aside, just register the car in Quebec and give your friend's address, then get an insurance. You'll probably need to surrender your Ontario DL for a Quebec one, not sure. I see quite a few cars with Quebec plates which belong to people who live in ON.

However, if some serious accident happens, your insurance company has a right to refuse to cover damages and stuff, because you lied about your address. So, doing this is not recommended. In case of serious accident you'll be in deep sh*t, for sure. This is an insurance fraud.

If you want to register it in Quebec, your driver's license will need to be in Quebec.

If you start having mismatched documents (some from ON, some from QC --- health cards, credit cards, etc), you will probably start getting audited. That ain't fun.

If you transfer everything over to QC, it would work, but then you'd also pay the QC income tax, which would mean an additional 10% of your salary is lost to taxes.

Suck it up and put the plate on :)
