Problem to start the engine in winter...
 

Hi everybody :ylsuper:

I heard that the rotary engine does not like cold start.
This winter will be my first with my 8 and I want to know if you have some trick or some component you had to your car to improve cold start.

I heard some people had a heat plate under the engine but I cannot what think about it.

How old is your 8?
There have been numerous TSBs about this since 2003 if yours is that old.
If 2005, or 2006 winter starts should not be a problem.

My 8 is a 2004.

The guy who said that to me have one too ( but a 2005 ). He said when it is very cold outsde, like -25 celcius, the engine start after 3 or 4 turn of crank and after that the engine goes and come from 3000 to 2000 during 2 minutes.

I'm not sure if that guy is thrustable but I just want be sure. :cool:

If you experince hard starts, and you dont have a new starter + battery, bring it to the dealership, tell them about the hard start and they'll give you a new starter + battery. With the old equipment, it might take 3 or 4 turns before the engine cranks. And 3000rpm is normal. its only 1/3 from redline. 2000rpm in a cold start is normal in a piston engine with 6000rpm redline. It is to warm up the cat. If you dont like to see the high rpm idle, blip/touch the throttle it should return to ~1000rpm.

Your 8 will start just fine in -25 weather. Winnipeg can hit those low temps easy, and actually much lower. Starting still no problem.

I go tthe new starter/battery but it was due to a floded engine, not hard cold start.

I also had a block heater installed. It is an RX7 block heater with an adaptor. Heating element design that clamps to the outside of the engine.

Add the pilot alpine's I bought and considering the car is no longer winter driven, one could say overkill! Lol.

I've only owned my 04 mt 8 since August and I've only had one flood so far. It happenned in August one morning and using the usual flooring of the gas peddle to shut off the fuel injection like I had to do on several occasion during the 10 yrs with my 7, it took nearly 30 mins. before she started. Very fustrating not knowing if you will ever get her started and whether to abandon and start talking alternate means to get to work.

Anyway, now that I have the flash, do you guys know if I still have to respect the "cold start" rule that everyone is talking about? I personally have never given it any thought but have also never had an opportunity to cold start. With winter coming around, I will surely be starting her just to move her off the driveway for snow removal.
