Odd question regarding wheel caps on Kosei wheels...

2 Attachment(s)
Hey guys,

I'm looking for a solution all the way out in left field.
I recently got some Kosei K1 TS's. The center cap that comes with these wheels is a little tacky. I never liked it. My plan was to obtain the wheels, but change the center cap.
I never realized how much of a chore this would be.
As it turns out, Kosei doesn't use a standard size for its center cap.
The wheel itself relies on the cap to be inserted from the inside before mounting it onto the hub. From what I can see it's got a little indent on the wheel where the center cap sits against.

I bought some Mazdaspeed center caps hoping they would fit without any modifications. That was too good to be true. The entire cap fits within the hole. It's about 2-3mm's off from being able to sit against the little dent.

My question is, does anyone know of an elegant solution to this problem?

I've attached the pics of the wheels and caps I've been talking about.

I want to run the Mazdaspeed caps on these Kosei wheels.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Chris

Come on now.. seriously... :p:

Ok, I see the pics now..

Neo, do you want a bandaid solution (i.e. one you just put on and never take off), in that case MAGIC PUTTY will do it..

Or.. do you preferred an engineered solution that allows you to take the cap on and off?

I also need to know, when you put the mazdaspeed centre cap on.. is there any wobble or play? Does it sit centre perfectly, just that the tabs don't latch on the back?

I would like a nicely engineered solution. :)

The cap itself doesn't come with tabs. It's milled out of aluminum. Outer diameter is probably 65mm, and then the inner circle, which holds 2 sets of rubber rings, is about 60-61mm.
There are no tabs.
The little tab on the wheel it has to sit against is probably 6-8mm's away from the inner circle of the cap.

I think I might have to get something fabbed up.

Does the cap sit exactly centre right now, or is there play around the edge?

The cap right now fits within the hole of the hub. But it's a little tight. Since it's got rubber rings it tends to sit in if there's pressure, but then you let go and it twists a bit out.
I don't want it to sit on the hub though. I want it to sit on the wheel itself. Which is probably the safer way to go, right? :)

hey least yours comes with center caps even tho they are tacky. Works doesn't make them, how gay is that!

Need someone that is able to make them specific, least that's what I need :(

Damn.. yeah, I heard certain wheels from manufacturers don't come with caps.
That's gotta suck.
I've been reading about some crazy work arounds for center caps though... I'm sure you'll be able to find something.

I think I've got everything I need. I just overlooked a few things. I hope to try it out tonight. But we'll have to wait and see.

I encounter this issue when I purchase Rota Wheels for my old Mazda3. What I end up doing is removing the metal sticker off of the rota center cap and replaced it with a custom gold mazda symbol on black background logo printed on a car sticker-like material...

You could take the same approach but have 'mazdaspeed' logo be printed on a thin metal sheet and replace it on the original Kosei center cap....the wonders of Adobe Illustrator!!!!

Just a thought....

The mazdaspeed logo isn't actually just a sticker/logo though on the centre cap. I had them before. It's something that has a thick laminate plastic coating on top! Very nice!

2hit6,

Yes, you could do this if you wanted to use the center cap that came with the Kosei wheel. The thing is, I'm not fond of the actual cap. The logo I could care less about. It's the actual cap that I have a problem with.

The Mazdaspeed cap is made out of solid aluminum and the "sticker" is laminated really nice. It will stand the test of time, no doubt.

Just gotta take a look and see if I can fit it somehow. There's going to be a bit of trial and error, no doubt.

You can try for a tension fit using rubber tubing that's cut and lined around the circumference. like a grommet

I'll make sure to get a few people together for this.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
