Hello again from Toronto where I picked up my new Brilliant Black 2005 RX8 GT last night from Gyro Mazda.

It's been an interesting 24 hours as I try to externalize all that I have read in these forums into a unique driving experience. I took the car from the dealer straight to my girlfriend's place in Brampton where there were localized snow flurries just to make things interesting.

Here are some initial thoughts....

This is the best gearbox I've ever experienced...enough to convince an automatic fan that there's no point. You really have to work to stall this car.

This car is a demerit machine if you're not paying attention. Again, I apologize for stating the obvious....but everything I've researched about the RX8 didn't give me any idea about what it's like with rotary. You cannot explain to piston drivers how out of bounds you are with speed and RPM and IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE YOU'RE DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENT!!!

Brakes are incredible. Fit and finish are beautiful. Drove 14 kilometres on the 407 before I realized that beautiful deep red dash was NOT the nighttime setting. Found the **** and it's brilliant white. Set the clock. Haven't figured out the radio settings for the 6 CD changer in-dash.

And the wheels I got from Gyro with winter Pirelli's are beautiful....not as nice as the 18 inch summer tires and rims...but quite nice for Toronto winters.

Toughest test so far....those flared fenders when I'm parking. Some close calls in tight spaces. What a car. Absolute hog on gas in the first 100 kilometres and I'm sure it won't get much better....but I do 8,000 K a year so I'm not concerned.

Fingers crossed that this will continue to bring me the joy I have encountered in so many different ways these 24 hours. Once I get the damn BOSE figured out.

Congrats buddy! Yea, it's definitely fun finding all those little "secrets" that you don't read about in the brochure. There's a thread in the main forum talking about "little things" in the RX8 that makes it rule.

I think one of the funnier ones was that some people didn't realize that the center console not only slides back but opens up to reveal ANOTHER compartment that has an outlet.

I personally LOVE the Homelink rearview mirror. No more stupid garage openers!

7200kms for me and still a thrill. Watch those revs though, break in is everything!

Did you get those Spyn wheels and the SottoZero's? Those would be the ones I bought there last year. I really like! Summer rims look better but the Spyn ones are pretty decent looking.

 

Hey Miker, congrats on the new 8, I aswell am a Brampton native and a proud papa to a Brilliant Black GT, had her a little over a week now and am LOVING every minute in it. I sometimes find myself sitting in the front of my house having a smoke, staring...the car puts me in somekind of trance I think.................

 

Hey Miker : was that you driving around Avenue and Lawrence around 11 am this morning? Sunroof open and lookin' proud? Looked like the Spyn rims but I never saw them sitting still so I couldn't really tell.

 

Nope, wasn't out this morning. I'm at Yonge and Davisville. A couple of posters have mentioned the SPYN rims for the winter Pirelli's. Haven't a clue what they're called, but they're really, really busy looking and they're a great look for the winter season. I can't wait to put the summer wheels and rubber on. But I can't complain about the winter so far either!

One thing I have to do is get this bugger cleaned. I'm in a condo parking garage less than three years old and that, combined with some snow the other night, has the Brilliant Black looking dusty with the usual slush-splash along the sides. What do you good people recommend for the first "wash" of this fine vehicle? A quick trip to the do-it-yourself washing bay with just soap and water? I'm a few months away due to the weather from a good driveway wash and wax, I guess.

126 kilometres on the odometre and I'm already looking at a trip to the ESSO down the street with a quarter tank left....but what the hell. Is there anything better than learning a car's needs and idiosyncrasies as you take it through those first 500K? Again, my only real concern is the bloody dust.

3000km for me since I pick up my 8 (GT in White 6spd) back in 2005 Sept, and I am very dissapointed!!

 

Whoa, why is that? Please explain.

 

Wow,,, 126 km and only a quarter tank left?????You must spend some time just idling or you need to get it checked. Btw there is no cure for dust on black cars. My last car was black and it drove me nuts. especially when the sun shines on it and you see all the hairline scratches in the paint. I then swore that I will never own another black car. They look great when first cleaned but keeping it clean is a fulltime job in itself.
