My dad goes to Calgary tomorrow for a job interview...

What can ya'll tell me about the place? Where is it? My dad said it was north of the Rocky Mtns. I'm hoping he gets the job. His wife is a citizen of Canada and it would make him happy... and I'm kinda excited too. I've always wanted to leave the states! :D

It's actually east of the rocky mountains...they run through Canada as well ;)

I grew up on the west coast of BC and have only been in Calgary for about a year and a half but I love it. It just has this vibe that I've never experienced in any other city I've lived in.

Interesting stuff:
- it's about 45 min. away from awesome skiing and scenery
- it has warm (not hot) summers and cold winters, but not that much snow and Alberta has the most sunny days annually in Canada
- not much rain...for comparison, Calgary gets half the annual rainfall of Vancouver
- the Calgary Stampede is every year in July...about 10 days of drunkeness. Most people hardly work...there's free breakfasts all over the city every morning...a pubcrawl with 8,000 people...and of course the rodeo
- pop. ~ 1,000,000
- the most millionaires per capita in Canada
- if Calgary / Edmonton region was a country, it would have the second highest GDP per capita in the world
- not that much crime, especially compared to other cities of similar size
- great hockey city...even when we lost the cup last year there was no rioting like other cities...just a huge party on 17th ave.
- happy hours are huge here...lots of drinkers!
- definitely a white collar city
- young population...more young people than I've seen in any other city, actually
- most beautiful women I've seen per capita...NO LIE...I've done quite a bit of travelling too
- in the oil and gas industry, everybody knows everybody...this can be good and bad
- traffic is pretty good, but I'm not a big fan of the transit system even though it's supposed to be decent

Yeeeeeeehaw! :D

Wow, Thanks Khtm. I am definitely going to have to visit now if they end up moving there. A visit during the drunken stampede in July would be nice (and a nice break from the Texas heat) and then I'll go back in the winter for some ski bunny fun. :D

When I was a kid, back in the late 60's, we lived in Grand Cache for a couple of years. I remember Klondik(sp) days and the famous stampede, even back then. I still have a gold Klondike coin from then. Is that still going on or is it the same thing? Maybe that was an Edmonton thing?

Anyways, loved Jasper and baniff.

They both still happen every year. Klondike days is nothing compared to the Stampede. The city really shuts down for business and parties for 10 days.

One of the other things that is nice about Calgary is that:

1) for the most part it doesn't flood here. (There was some flooding from an unusual June in which we set a record for rain.) I'll never understand people who build houses in a flood plain.

2) No Hurricanes

3) No Tornados - they get them about 1.5 hours north from us

4) No Earthquakes

5) No poisonous animals - the only ones that were indigenous to this area were rattle snakes but you'd be had pressed to find one around Calgary these days.

6) 45 min to 1.5 hours and you have your pick of 5 ski hills (mountains)...those are hills in the east. :D

7) Lots of daylight./ In the summer the sun is up past 10 pm

8) not much snow in the winter - but it does get frick'n cold

9) Chinooks -Calgary is one of the only places in the world where you can go from -30c to +10c in a day.

10) Work - if you can't get a job here right now, you are useless.

Don't forget that we have the cheapest gas in the country. Not that this is an issue for us RX-8 owners! :-)

Uh, just wanted to say that he doesn't speak for the majority of Albertans, who have no desire to separate. But I respect his right to speak freely.

Political?

Hope this doesn't get to be a political thread..... ;)

Not the majority ....yet. It's at 43% and rising.

I won't say another word on it. I know this is an RX8 forum. My point was made.
