My 8 Died last night!

3 Attachment(s)
I just put my 8 back on the road one week ago ... thanks to Prospectjtaz and Thumper3322!! Drove it for a week. It seemed to be getting better and better as I drove it.

Last night I took her out for a drive around midnight. Around 12:30am I was coming up from the south end of Ajax when I was stopped at the lights behind another car at Westney and Bayly. The light changed and as the car in front of me moved I let off of the clutch and gave a little gas ... "Clunk!" Then the car stalled!!

Hmmm! I tried to start it. It turned over easily but no spark! When I switched the ignition back off ... I could still hear the rotors spinning!! "Ok! That's not good!"

I got out and looked under the car but there was nothing to be seen.

Called for a tow (Warranty) and waited. I was just a km from Ajax Mazda so naturally I had the driver take the 401 to Whitby Mazda!!

Got home about 2am and called it a night.

Not sure how this is going to play out. 130,000 km and 3rd party warranty. They will likely hit me up for receipts for proof of regular oil changes which I do myself. No idea if I have any receipts. Anyone there have any I can borrow?

Should hear back on Monday what Mazda says and what the warranty people say.

Wish me luck! :fingersx:

:( Good luck!!! Wonder what the science is to having a solid 1st gen rx8 engine. My 04 has always been solid and nearing 70k miles.

Just a clunk and the car died?? That's really odd...
Tranny stuck in gear?

I hope everything works out.

Scoot RX-8 04-18-2010 09:29 AM

The shifter was working as usual. To be honest I can't say with any certainty where the noise can from. I believe it was the transmission area. I thought that the U joints snapped but I could see no evidence of it under the car, but maybe there would not be any evidence ... I don't know.

Still ... I have to play the waiting game.

Scoot RX-8 04-22-2010 07:02 PM

On Monday I got a call from the Whitby Mazda that the problem with my car was that the some of the spark plug wires were not on in the proper order which caused the car to stop and to flood! I asked him how I could drive it with the wires in the wrong order and he said it will still go! But it was running sooo good! :shocking: He told me they would have to deflood the engine! :uhh:

Then I got a call the next day. They told me I need a new engine! I told them that I do not have any receipts to prove I have been doing my own oil changes but I have only had the car for a year and only 12000km on it since … that’s two oil changes. They told me they would contact my 3rd party warranty company and check to see if they would cover the cost of the engine. But then he also told me the starter, catalytic converter, and the front passenger wheel strut was leaking and needs replacing. :eyetwitch

Well ... they called me later and said that the warranty company would not pay for my engine as I do not have the oil receipts. Oh-no!! :Eyecrazy: I can’t afford to pay for the engine myself!! Then the service advisor I was talking to said that his manager over heard the conversation with the warranty company and said he would "go to bat for me" and try to get Mazda to pay for the engine! Wow!! Thank you! I hope they can!! :fingersx:

Wednesday I did not get a call until after 2pm. They told me that Mazda WILL pay for the engine!! Thank you God!!! That is fan-tas-tic!! Haha! But there is one catch ... there are no engines currently in North America – back ordered! They have to ship it from Japan and it will take 3 weeks!! Sound familiar ZmfnZm? So I asked if it was ok if I just come by sometime and just sit in my car!!! He said I could! Haha! :fruit:

Dude... that's great news that Mazda will replace the engine for you. I guess Whitby Mazda gets a +1 for this.

2hit6 04-23-2010 10:32 AM

That sounds awesome...definitely a +1

That was great~~~

Neo 04-23-2010 12:16 PM

What a crazy explanation.
I don't know.. sounds really iffy for the engine to just let go. Really strange.

I hope there's nothing else the dealer forgot to look over.

Hopefully you'll get her back on the road soon.

Scoot RX-8 04-23-2010 12:55 PM

Yes ... I thought is was strange too. Only time will tell ... with a new motor installed ... what problem could remain with the ability to create such a catastrophic affect?

I'm looking at mid May (fingers crossed)! Just playing the waiting game now!

Thumper3322 04-23-2010 03:30 PM

+1 for Whitby Mazda.
Get everything else done while you are waiting, so it doesn't take that much longer.

I don't believe them about the wires tho.

Maybe not, but hey! If it gets me a new engine out of the deal ... I'm good with that! :yesnod:

Are you sure yours is a blown engine?? I did not request a car as I have another to drive (winter beater). So I have no idea if they would have. Sorry.

Scoot RX-8 05-07-2010 10:37 AM

I just got off the phone with Mazda ... the engine has arrived!!

They said they will begin the work on Monday and should have it completed for pickup on Tuesday evening!! :yesnod:

Fingers crossed that all goes well!!

hackdss 05-07-2010 01:54 PM

Ive been reading up and my problem is starting to sound more and more like my alternator has gone. but i dont want to spend 175 for the alternator and replace it my self and then later on find out it wasnt the alternator

Scoot RX-8 05-07-2010 08:24 PM

Sounds like you need to take this to the dealership. On the other thread you thought maybe it was fuel related, here you thought maybe it was the same issue I had. Now your saying you feel it is the alternator. I am not sure what you have been experiencing but I would spend some money on diagnostics to ensure you know exactly what the problem or problems are. This could save you a lot of grief ... especially if there is more than one problem. Could be worth it to know now!

Scoot RX-8 05-10-2010 07:50 AM

Well ... the 8 goes in for heart surgery today! Hopefully all goes well and there are no surprises! Fingers crossed!

Scoot RX-8 05-11-2010 07:55 PM

Got a call from Whitby Mazda and they let me know they are finished on my car and it is running!

However, they still want the car tomorrow to tune and test the car fully. They want the full day to do it, but I can pick the car up at the end of the day tomorrow.

Yahoo! Almost there!

Ka Kui 05-12-2010 03:11 PM

Any updates?

Scoot RX-8 05-12-2010 08:50 PM

Well they had the car ready for me just as they said. I picked it up and took it home. Ran great! After dinner I took her out for a good drive. Started the car and went inside the house to get my sunglasses. When I got back the car was not running! I started it with no problem. Then the idle dropped and it stalled. I could not keep it running at idle.

I took it for a brief drive around nearby streets and it ran great except for any time I stopped the car and allowed it to idle on it's own. So I decided to take it on a longer run on the 401. I took it from Whitby to Port Hope and back. It ran awesome on the 401 with lots of power and response. As soon as I got off the 401 and stopped at the first red light I came to ... it stalled immediately.

Back at the dealership with the keys in the drop off and a message on the answering machine. I'll put up with the beater for a little longer and give them time to work out the bugs! Hopefully they can get this adjusted properly tomorrow for me!!

Neo 05-13-2010 06:50 AM

Does the Renesis still have an idle screw??
They probably forgot to set it correctly once the car is fully up to temp.

I hate it when the little things start to compromise your situation.

I'm sure it's a quick fix.

This maybe a little self serving ... but this seems close to what happened to me...

As far as the Cat is concerned it is brand spanking new! Maybe a sensor issue still but I would expect a CEL ... who knows. They are checking it out now.
