Mechanic Recommendation - GTA

Hi Guys (and Gals),

I just moved to the GTA and am finding that most things are a lot more expensive here than they were on the prairies.

Anyways, I was out cruising on the 401 today and found that I could no longer access my 5th and 6th gears. Searching this forum, I think that I probably have a sheared bolt in my tranny, but now I am at a bit of a loss for where to get the work done.

Anyone know a good mechanic that won't fleece me? I have no connections here, so any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Do you have any warranty left? If you do I would go see a dealership

Stealership will just sell you a new trans.

I bet its a shift fork roll pin that fell out. The one RX-8 team running World Challenge had problems with that happening.

Transmission has to be removed and partially dis-assembled. As long as the roll pin hasnt caused any damage inside, its not a horrible job to do.

What year/series transmission do you have?

V1-Rot8 09-04-2012 11:51 AM

Hi guys,

My baby is a 2006 Special Edition. I am the only owner and only have about 30k on it, so no, there wouldn't be any warrant left on it.

I called the dealership and they were pretty non-commital. When pressed, their estimate was $1200 to start. Seems a bit steep compared to what I read on a US thread.

Any non-dealerships that you guys trust? Because of the rotary engine, I have always only gone to dealerships for anything on the 8, but in my experience with other vehicles that I have owned, the best mechanics tend to not be at the dealerships.

Your advice is most appreciated.

The best pitch here seems to be for Ivan's garage, up in Markham. From the sound of things, he does enough rotaries that he knows what he's doing. Don't know what the rates are like, but it everyone likes him, there must be a reason.

If you need a dealership, Avanti Mazda seems to be the place everyone talks about. (Not sure where they are, Scarborough maybe.)

Perfect, thanks. I will call Ivan tomorrow. Whatever his prices, if the guys here vouch for him, then I will trust him.

Hold on, is he in Markam, or is he in Stoney Creek (quite far away)? I just checked on google.

He's in Markham, his site is iGarage Markham - Auto Parts and Services

I've had brakes done there, he's a good guy. Not sure how he'd be with transmission work but I'm sure he'd give you a straight up answer about what he thinks can be done over the phone.
