Yea I got mine mid August 2006. But if they really wanted to move them, they'd give those rates for the 07's.

Its been over a week now and I am pretty certain there is a tad more power with the CAI. I hope that the loud sound of it is not influencing my mind, but the flat spot around 6K seems to be gone and 3rd pulls from 6-9.5K better and seemingly quicker than before.

Even if its all in my mind, I think its worth the $$$ because using full throttle is no longer just fun, now it has become an event!

No, Helas is still around... he pops up once and awhile.
He's probably traveling the world or something like that... that guy is always busy!

So when are we going to see you again??

A large cow if you flour it a low RPMs. I try to avoid doing that, but agter 6K, its a different matter altogether when it comes to sound.

Mazdaspeed CAI vs the rest

I'm very frustrated, just finished typing a long reply with test specs etc. and it disappeared when i clicked on submit... Ahhh.

Well the short version is as follows.

I've had the Mazdaspeed CAI on for about 2 weeks and HATE it. Loss of low end power and huge gain in noise at full throttle with NO noticeable gain in power.
So I used a G-Tech and experimented with 3 different setups.
Here is what I found.
(Car full fuel, no junk in the trunk, just me = 1500kg at the weighscale.)
Just FYI, Full fuel, car only, no passenger or driver = 1400kg (accurate to +/- 10kg).

Stock Intake = 184HP

Stock intake with drop in K&N = 190HP

Mazdaspeed CAI = 185HP; but slower throttle response + loss of low end power.

Did some research and found some AEM test documents that show the K&N flows at least 2 to 3.5 times more air (depending on the amount of air flowed) than most of the other filters available and it DOES NOT let more dirt through; thats a myth.

The calculated RENESIS maximum engine air flow at WOT @ 8000rpm is just under 400CFM. Most stock filters and even the AEM DRYFLOW (Madzaspeed filter) cannot flow that much air without a significant pressure drop.
According to the graphs its almost a 5" of water - pressure drop for the DRYFLOW and only a 2.5" water drop for the K&N, with "NO DUST LEAKAGE" detected.

So in my opinion If you want to keep the good low end response and get decent power gains throughout the rev range, if you are still under warranty, use the stock intake with a K&N drop in panel filter #33-2284 (rated to 441CFM with no noticeable pressure drop). It will flow as much as your engine will ever demand in an unboosted setup.

Out of warranty, the Raceing Beat REVi with the ram air attachment.
This keeps the tuned intake horn for smooth air delivery and uses a free flowing short ram design and still maintains a big box for that accumulator effect to help low end throttle response. Rated for a 10HP increase at 8000rpm.

Honestly though, for an extra 4HP, is $350plus really worth it ?
I'd say the stock setup and a K&N panel filter is pretty good bang for your buck. Save that extra $300 towards a free flowing exhaust system. Thats the other half of maximizing your engine's breathing efficiency.

Hope this info was useful.

Stef.

I can tell you that I have had mine for a few weeks and for me it seems the car is running very very well. Quite frankly, it feels like the car never ran better. Someone made a comment below that the car doesn't respond as well as before at low RPM's. And this is true in my case, but over 6K, I feel it makes a noticeable difference in acceleration. I have never got a CEL for over 35,000KMS....glad that issue was put to bed a long time ago. Maybe you should go to a dealer that has a good reputation for putting these on. I went to Mississauga Mazda on Erin mills just south of Battleford.

Had my car in the shop last week to get the CEL fixed. They kept it overnight and worked on it the next day then told me it was fixed.
It was fine for 3 days but now the light is back on....
I wish I still had my stock intake.......
Its going back into the shop today...

Try a different dealership. They obviously don't know what's wrong and are just clearing the code.

Make sure that the Vacuum nipple on the bottom of the plenum just behind the throttle body is capped. Maybe you have a vacuum leak causing the CEL to come on.
Also check your MAF connector to ensure that it is plugged on properly.

Good luck !

Well my performance package came in. Now I'm not sure if I want the intake or not. My initial thought is no because it sounds like a cow, but I'd be interested to see if it increases performance in conjunction with the greddy exhaust. Or I could just sell it.

Thoughts?

don't pay attention to any of my problems with the CAI. It seems there was a bigger problem all along. The car is throwing a code about something upstream of the injector, I can't remember the exact code. The dealership has been on the phone with mazda tech support all day and can't figure it out. Mazda had them run a load of tests on it and send the results in and now they are waiting on a reply. This sounds like the start of something bad.......
5200km and all these problems already....I am honestly considering trading it

I think it all depends on the service department of the dealer. sometimes those guys don't have a clue what's going on.

The RX-8 is so complicated! The computer is tied into everything! It's really annoying. Can't change a damn thing without effecting the ECU!

Biggest differences I find is the e-throttle crap! I run into that problem whenever I jump from the 3 into the FD. The FD responds instantly and directly. While in the 3 the response is delayed. The computer doesn't understand you want to open the throttle when you barely touch the pedal! The feel isn't the same either.

So many cars nowadays try to isolate you from what's actually happening! It doesn't make any sense...

lol thank you for that off-topic rant. I think the electronic throttle on the rx8 I actually pretty damn good. Good enough that I don't have any complaints.

I guess I'll have them install the intake unless somebody reading this thread wants to buy it. I'll just take it off when I install the Mazsport turbo. :P
