Mazda warranty info!?
 

Hello Fellas,
Nice to meet you all <----- noob here!
I am thinking of purchasing my first RX8,an 04 gt with 22 thousand k's. I have had 3 rx7's in the past and was thinking of making the jump up to an 8.
My question is can you purchase an extended Mazda warranty from mazda canada, for your 8 if it was purchased from a "no-name" dealer (used car dealer)
If any of you have the answer I'd appreciate it.

Not sure - Mazda states that you have a period of time to think about getting the extended warranty after you purchase the car, but it gets more expensive after the fact.

I don't know why you would bother, the powertrain warranty goes for five years, that's where all the expensive stuff is. Depending on the original delivery date, that could be a couple years or more, enough time to find out if anything is seriously wrong. The mileage is low enough that it won't be a factor in prematurely killing the remaining warranty.

Making a purchase like this for me puts me at the top of my budget, not wanting to make a sudden "mazda" part purchase is not what I'd like either, I.E a power steering pump, air conditioning unit etc.

Dot worry about the power steering pump,there isn't one.However the electric power steering rack runs about $1800.

Like I mentioned I owned a few RX7's although, the word around here is to "steer" (sorry) clear of th 04 model and aim for a 05?

Not all 2004 8's have been plagued with problems (knock on wood). If you're getting (or think that you are) a good deal with the 04 that you're looking at I'd say go for it.

More food for though on the cost of ownership front:

- Just putzing around town chews up about $50/week in gas for me and I don't drive very far.
- You can burn a whole tank of gas in a couple hours if you push the car.
- New tires $900-$1600 every 1-3 years depending on various driving factors and type of tires.
- The brakes are huge, you can only assume that renewal there will cost a few bucks.
- If living anywhere besides the west coast count on spending $1500-$2000 to get snows and rims or have a separate winter car.
- I have seen huge insurance premiums for some people, mine are reasonable though, worth checking.
- I personally wouldn't have this as an only car, not very compatible with a bunch of outdoor activities if one is so inclined.
- Expensive high performance cars have high priced parts and then have a higher tendency to break or wear stuff out. One can live with that if the car is cheap, but it's not in this case. Bought a few German luxury cars in the past that had depreciated badly, then I didn't mind dropping a grand or two here and there to fix the things.
- There is very little difference between 04 models and the current ones. There have been a few recalls where they performed minor retrofits and that should make all the cars essentially the same. There was never a .5 model year type of situation where a major mechanical part was reengineered because it was failing all the time. My 04 has been quite solid, had a couple very minor things fixed, actually it's about the most trouble-free car I have owned, you wouldn't get that idea from some of the negative stuff on this board. There are definitely other cars out there with certain model years that you want to avoid, I don't really think that applies in this case.
- Guess the only thing that would scare me is how the used car was driven. I wouldn't care so much about being driven generally hard but was it always warmed up properly and did they abuse the drive-line by doing drag strip type launches etc.
- Then if you have had some RX-7s why not stick with that game? I always thought it would be fun to grab one and strip it down and use it as an autox or track car. i.e. have a toy car you can abuse on weekends in a not overly serious kind of way and then have a practical car. #84racing has a more extreme example of what a prepped NA 2nd gen RX-7 can go, that thing runs circles around my 8. An FD will do that in stock form, I love that car and in some ways I think it is more cool but it would scare me in terms of repair cost and nice ones are pretty expensive.

To answer your original question you can purchase the factory extended warranty within 3 yrs or 80,000km of the car in service date. If you are buying from a used car dealer be very very careful. Most low KM late model cars from used car dealers have a reason for being there. If you pm me the serial number I will run a proper history check (liens, owners and accident)
