I need some advises...

Hi Everyone, I am new in the RX-8 forum...

I don't own a RX-8 yet but I am planning to. In fact I am going to the dealer tomorrow morning. Is it a good time now to get one?

I have done many research on the car and the engine.

I love the style of the car but I am doubting if I can afford the keep up cost.

Can you guys give me a rough idea of monthly gas cost and yearly maintenance/repair cost?

Any other input would be great!

Thanks in advance.

A) How many km do you drive each month, and what's the ratio of highway to city?

B) Are you buying used or brand new?

An admin might want to merge the 2 identical threads.

I am planning to buy a 2010 brand new R3.

I guess i am 70city / 30 hwy.

This might be a bit blunt, but basically, if you have to worry about daily cost, this isn't the car for you. A tank of gas is say $60 depending on which province you're in, and it lasts you say 400km. So.. it's not a Corolla.

However, other than that your costs, especially on a brand new warrantied car are not that much.. insurance isn't bad (I'm paying ~600 a year in Quebec), tires are as expensive as you want to make them.. the cost of adding oil every now and then is marginal.. So really, it's just the gas. If you can live with that, go for it :)

I love everything about this car, even the engine. But I am worry about it, I read so many negatives and positive about it. This simply will be my car for the next 5 years at least.

+1 Loki, fuel can cost big time and I wouldn't pay any attention to the advertised mileage.

If you have any man testosterone at all you're car will very rarely see RPMs below 3k and most likely will live in the 4k range which means fuel baby fuel.

I run only Sunoco 94 so that's 1.10/liter and like Loki, I get about 400+ kms depending on how hard I drive.

5 year outlook
- Tire - what Loki said
- Oil changes, do them and do them often
- Drop in K&N air filter - easily best bang for the buck
- Coils - every 30k maybe 50k if ur lucky
- Plugs - at least once
- Coolant - yearly (recommended but really who does this?)
- Brake fluid change - once maybe twice
- Brakes - depends on mileage and usage. I just need to do mine now and its been five years.
- Transmission and Final drive fluid change, at least once

Remember, if you want this car to feel like its alive you need to have the rpms at 4k+ and thats fuel .... lots and lots of fuel.

You will not ever ever ever get 600km out of a tank of fuel and if you do I'll be the first to wave the BS flag.

If fuel mileage is your thing, stay away very far away from the RX8

Whats with the double post?

kenken3686 05-29-2010 07:21 AM

Sorry for the double post.

How well is the Rx-8 in winter? I do plan on putting on some nice winter tires.

So 60L tank can run 400km+?

wcs 05-29-2010 07:27 AM

Get some good winter tires and you'll be fine.

Edit:
Oh ya.... 400 - 450 km per tank....
I got 530 ish once on a pure highway drive taking it easy the whole time.

One of my big big concern, do we have the good mechanics for Rotary here in Ontario or the GTA area.

wcs 05-29-2010 07:51 AM

Its hit and miss really.
I'm north of Toronto and do all my own work on the car.

Maybe some of the other Torontonian 8 owners will help you out.

Edit: Guess I'm still in the GTA however. Is Orangeville GTA? Maybe not.

Veselini 05-29-2010 08:04 AM

The most i've ever gotten out of a tank was 380 :( And thats fairly normal, over that is not normal i think, but your getting a 2010 right? I don't know how much better they do.

Footman 05-29-2010 08:16 AM

This is turning into another "MPG thread.."

wcs 05-29-2010 10:16 AM

I"m heading to Barrie today ... I'll fill up and let you know what I get tomorrow.

kenken3686 05-31-2010 05:13 PM

I think i am signing the paper in 2 hours...

Final negotiation with the sales dude.

Chris_Bangle 05-31-2010 06:15 PM

I am on my second rx8. They are great cars and are very reliable.

You also get 160,000km or 8 years on engine and trans so you are covered there.

I currently have an r3 with zero problems. Just top up my oil periodically and do all the maintenance on time.

Make sure you get a good deal on it.

tubingchamp 05-31-2010 06:17 PM

I get 250 KM/tank :(

New plugs/wires time :P

wcs 05-31-2010 07:15 PM

Congrats
Its a love hate relationship!

Yes... I am going to pick my car on Saturday.
I bought 7yrs/160,000kms warranty on it... just in case shit happens.
I bought accessories like ipod adapter, floor mats, trunk mats, wheel locks, and a.... touch up pen!
So... 41995$CAD is the MSRP for the car. I got a 4500$ incentive and another $1,100 off at the end. I was also able to squeeze 3 free oil changes from him.
He was a nice salesman... DIRECT MAZDA!!

DCYT 06-01-2010 08:53 PM

I don't know if that is a good deal or not ....

Calling my dealer today about a R3 because my lease on my MS6 is almost up, he told me the incentives below:

$1000 off for being a former Mazda customer
$7000 cash back on the R3 if I paid by cash.
24/36/48/60/72; 0.0/0.0/0.0/0.9/2.9 if I finance

So off the bat, there is a little more discount that you can get.
The cash back above is just from Mazda Canada, then there are some wiggle room on the dealer cost and MSRP ....
