How to get the pop sound from your exhaust

I've figured out how you could get the popping sound on our cars. This maybe nothing new to most of you, but thought I'd just like to share with others who seek it. Every pop potentially has "flames" coming out of the exhaust that you will never see because you're the driver. Your friends and fellow drivers may see it.

Setup:
MS CAI
MS EXHAUST
Shell V-Power 91

All you have to do is go WOT on every gear and lift off to shift at around 6000 - 6200 RPM. It should accompany with a pop. This is not predetonation in the engine, it's coming from the exhaust.

It has worked for me 9 / 10 times.

Or get a straight pipe, and get multiple pops.

tubingchamp 10-09-2008 06:20 PM

My car with just Agency Power catback will pop almost every shift (if above 6k RPM and held for a few seconds). Tried to get flames out of it for about 5 minutes but it was a no-go with stock cat.

sensor issues with your CAI? Care to part info?

You bet, get rid of CAT and you can POP like a mad man...

Yeah, footman the dealership that installed my CAI mustve done it wrong, but they took it out and wouldnt put one back in again.. I have it in my garage ive taken it apart and re-aligned the screens just havent had time to put it back in..

i get a pop everyshift without a cat...lol

i dont want it when theres cops around...

Redshift 10-10-2008 10:06 AM

I have just the Mazdaspeed catback, and I get pops on the upshift as well, and some pop and burble if coasting down a hill etc.

As for flames, I was getting some pretty good flames while braking hard for a corner after being WOT at high RPM on the track.

Lmao

A sign of a well tuned machine, Ignition in my exhaust

A popping exhaust can be made on any RX-8, modded or not, it's just that you won't hear it on the OEM exhaust unless you're outside the car.

Do you guys know why our exhaust make popping noises?

To answer your questions on why, read below...

Just as the shape of the Wankel combustion chamber prevents preignition, it also leads to incomplete combustion of the air-fuel charge, with the remaining unburned hydrocarbons released into the exhaust. While manufacturers of piston-engine cars were turning to expensive catalytic converters to completely oxidize the unburned hydrocarbons, Mazda was able to avoid this cost by enriching the air/fuel mixture and increasing the amount of unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust to actually support complete combustion in a 'thermal reactor' (an enlarged open chamber in the exhaust manifold) without the need for a catalytic converter, thereby producing a clean exhaust at the cost of some extra fuel consumption.

Oh, here's the cliffnotes version:

Our engine does not burn all the fuel, it dumps some into the exhaust manifold and cat. Our manifold and cat is hot enough to detonate the remaining gas.

BTW, you can shoot flames with the OEM exhaust system too under the right conditions. I've done it many times while tracking on a hot day (cat gets super super super super hot when driving under WOT for a while).

yea, my friend told me he saw my 8 breath fire while we were on the road to RAMA. I wasn't sure but by the statement of the above, I would say, with OEM exhaust the 8 still can make a pop sound or breath fire, occasionally :)

If you want a really big spurting of flames using the mazdaspeed exhaust and mazdaspeed CAI, the best thing to do is down shift from 6th @ 3000rpm to 4th @ 6000-7000rpm. This will give you blue/orange flames from both exhaust tips and will last a good 2-3 seconds. Do this at night with someone video taping behind you in another car and the effect is awesome!

ur not gonna shoot flames with a cat...stock exhaust sometime pops too.

You can, search on youtube. It's been done many times before, usually at track.

I've done it on my car at track too. All you have to do is run your car super hard for at least 15 minutes, then voila, though I advise you to do that on a track and not on public roads. Hell, ask some of the SoCal track norms.

The CAI is not the reason why it's shooting flames.

Now THIS is shooting flames.
