Desperate with INSURANCE help!

Hey guys! This is my first post, and I am pretty desperate... I am 16 right now living in Mississauga ON, which is really close to Toronto.... I just got my G2 a while ago, meaning i can drive on my own....and I was lucky enough that my parents bought a black Rx-8, which they were thinking of letting me to keep, since they already have a clk320...but the insurance company WON"T insure me...Can anyone give me some tips/help on this???

Murray16 03-10-2004 08:20 PM

honestly... I think youre up the creek... no paddle.

Shop around maybe??? If someone does insure it'll probably be pretty high.

See if your parents can insure it, either with one of them as principle driver, or insured under their name with you as principle driver.
My fiance and I put her civic under my name as principle, and the insurance came down, so, its a thought.

f1michel 03-11-2004 01:09 PM

Sorry to burst your bubble but i am very happy to see they won't insure you. This is not a car i'd let my 16 year old son drive. You could be the nicest kid on the block and be a young Schumacher it makes no difference. A 16 year old brain will just cease to be coherent in this car... i was 16 once !! :-)

Def High Risk Insurance.

Try insuring the car under your fathers name. Then driving it as a second/part time driver. Just a suggestion ....

Good Luck!

Murray16 03-12-2004 09:56 AM

im currently seeing what I'm going to have to pay with my father as the principle driver... I just got my G and completely clean record (20 year old)

Smoker 03-12-2004 03:33 PM

That's ok. Let your Father be the Principal driver of that car and you'll be the Occassional driver. You will not be able to drive it to work or to school but you will be insured and the cost will be a lot cheaper than if you are the principal driver.

One more thing, consider yourself one VERY VERY lucky person able to be able to drive a sports car at your very very young age. Drive safe and Be responsible at ALL times.

I agree with F1michel. Ask yourself why the insurance company won't insure you. Remember, the insurance company can exist only if it takes in more money (in insurance premiums that all their insurees pay them) than it pays out (in insurance claims).

Obviously, in your case the company is concerned about potentially having to pay for damages from an accident (repairs to your car, other people's cars that you hit, houses or lampposts etc. that you crash into, and God forbid, hospital or funeral bills).

Why you? The insurance company knows from many years of experience with millions of drivers that certain characteristics coincide with higher payouts due to higher accident rates. What are some of those "high risk driver" characteristics?

- being male
- being a teenager
- driving a sportscar
- little or no driving experience

Even though you might never have an accident, and we all hope not, those four characteristics of yours indicate that you have a higher than average likelihood of smashing up the car and yourself and others around you. Do you want to take that risk?

haha, probably I am not as responsible as people who are older, obviously...but, it's too iresistable to pass on a sports car at the age of 16(you guys were all 16 once)...I dont' want to drive my mom's acura RL, or my dad's Audi A8, and the clk 320 won't insure me as well...I might take the advise of being an occasional driver, but it would be better if I can take the car to school...Is that possible at all? again, thx for all the help guys!

School parking lots = bad idea!
I've been hit while in class twice now (when in highschool). The repairs are definately cheaper out of pocket than throug insurance.
I'm getting my 8 in 2 to 3 weeks and it may only see my college parking lot once a week. I have a 1 hour class on wednesday so that'll be the longest I leave it.

Trust me. Your best bet is to go under your father as an occasional driver. Only bring your car to school a maximum of once a week.

P.S. - I talked to my insurance company today. To insure the 8 and drop a car that is worth basically nothing ('91 Pontiac Firefly <- please don't ask!), it will cost me about $75 more a month. The lineup is as follows. 2004 RX-8, 1990 Toyota Celica and 2004 Toyota Echo (4 drivers all insured on each I'm 20, my sister is 24).
I think this is an awesome deal!

Murray16 03-13-2004 12:08 AM

ooopps

Wing 03-13-2004 07:31 AM

Wow this might be tough, you have 4 cars? How many drivers? I remember when my parents tried to put me as second driver on a third car. Most insurance sompanies won't allow this, if you have 3 cars and 3 drivers each car must be assigned a driver.

RX8hopefull 03-13-2004 11:23 AM

damn zaaaiiii must be nice to be spoiled. i didnt drive till i was 17 and when i did it was a 1985 toyota van. and this was in 1996-97. it was a pos but it got me around. think about that when you say u dont want to drive an AUDI or an ACURA.

ZAaaaaiiii 03-13-2004 11:44 AM

I know the A8, and RL are nice cars and everything, but I don't think it's a car that suits my age, it's more of an adult serious car...Even the Clk, it's for men with like mid-life crisis, haha, sry guys! But yeh, I think I will be an occasional driver for the 8, if my insurance company allows me... I probably will take the advise of not parking in school much...But, I was just wondering, is there any LEGAL issues if I take the car out by myself? cuz I was thinking of moving to BC or down to the states for university...I love the weather there! I am the only child in the family, so there are only three drivers... Do you think they can put my name down as an occasonal driver for all 4 cars?

ZAaaaaiiii 03-13-2004 11:46 AM

Forgot to mention this, Thanks alot guys! Wing,
Murray16, smoker, and everyone else...you guys are super supportive!

I drove one of those vans around when my Camero was acting crazy, it was heavily modded and not the most reliable car, the Toyota Van was a 5 speed, very reliable, people called it the Mystery Machine after Scooby Doo, but I refered to it as Lost in Space as it seemed to be like driving in a moon craft.

As far as insurance goes, it is not out of the ordinary for insurance companies to act like this, shop around, you might be able to insure with a different company that specializes in high risk, although it would be expensive, I would guess $300.00 plus a month. Most of the 8s that have been wrecked at fault seem to be the younger drivers.

Murray16 03-13-2004 01:34 PM

You can be insured under all cars... but it would be really expensive. Probably would be cheap to be insured on the 8 only and as a primary driver. However, I'm not an insurance salesman. If you call them up they would probably be more than willing to answer questions.

Steveo67 03-19-2004 08:37 AM

As an insurance rate payer for 20+ years, I am quite happy that your insurance company will not write a policy for you. There is no reason a 16 year old should be driving a high-performance sports car. It costs those of us who have had to earn our RX-8s far too much already....let alone the rate increases we face when 16 year olds start wrecking $40k cars. Since your parents have such a wealth of disposable income for cars, why don't they consider something more sensible for you .... Mazda3 sport is a great car!

Smoker 03-19-2004 09:09 AM

Given that you have three people in your family and 4 cars, I'm afraid the insurance company might force you to be the primary driver of at least one car. This is usually how it works. Better to have your parents call in and straighten it out.

From what I know, the Primary driver is the person who would operate that vechicle the most often. You would still be insuranced if you drive another car as long as it is not going to school and work (ie, not driving it on a daily basis).

"Unfortunately" (<>) for you, all your cars are pretty expensive cars, so either way you are gona cost a lot to be insured. I think your best bet right now is to find out which car is the least expensive for you be insuranced on and go with that. Hey, At least you can still be driving the RX-8 after schools and on the weekends, so don't complain !!

By the way, just to put things into perspective for ya, from 16 to 22, my only form of transportation was my precious 10 yr old bike !!!! I have retired that bike on its 20th birthday and its now hanging happy in my garage :D.

ZAaaaaiiii 03-19-2004 12:04 PM

I am really not going to complain about this, but my dad called in yesterday, and they said it can't be arranged.

It's not my parents have this BIG thing for cars, but it's just that they lease cars from tax or something... I didn't really get what they meant by that...

By the way, the CLK will be at the end of its 2 yrs contract in a few months... I always had a thing for mustangs, and I might convince my parents to get one... What do you guys think?

Murray16 03-19-2004 02:22 PM

Youre parent own a business don't they? That would make sense since you can write it off in taxes and youll get money back. Makes things cheaper.

Sorry about your luck... try to buy a used sportscar... like an Mr2 or and older Rx-7.... I'm very much biased against mustangs.... but theyre good cars nonetheless.
goodluck!
