If you're blinking at high RPMs, most likely it is misfiring. You probably need new coils, plugs, wires, etc. It might also be the CAT

Wonderful...I cant wait to hear back from Scarb. Mazda about the myriad problems she has under the hood. Whatever it is, I'm praying it's covered under the new engine warranty.

I will for sure. I'm thinking it may be time for new coils or plugs. She's at just under 64,000 kms so I'm pretty sure that's the time they usually need replacing...I think. Can you tell I'm obsessing about this? I've hijacked like 3 posts now with these concerns of mine! LOL Sorry all!

that's why it's best to start your own post on your own issue like Mike did for his issue, as I did for mine etc. Ya it's prob about time for coils etc. Get the BHR coil kit upgrade. It sounds like a lot of canadian boyz here are getting it next spring/summer. I'm on the waiting list for asap since my coils were fuked. I've heard nothing but good things so far from it. Whatever you do DO NOT go with the OEM from the dealership replacement coils and wires and plugs etc!!

Well, took it in, small EVAP leak. Ran a test, no problems. "Tightened" the gas cap and sent me on my way.

Hope that's all that's wrong with yours, Mike.

It sounds like a battery problem. Another guy from the states and the same ****, replaced coils, plugs, wires and still problem. Then bought a new battery and away she went. It takes a lot to crank the engines over and a strong battery especially to deflood it. Waiting sucks I KNOW!!

I tired tightening my cap last night....no good. But I am hoping that is all it is since it came on about 2 starts and 55KM after I gassed it up.

I'll take the cap off tonight and put it on again.

I just paid $602 after currency conversion for the BHR coils. Those coils include plug wires because they have a different type of terminal. I also paid $60 for new plugs.

You can get OEM coils here for a lot cheaper but they'll last you about as long as your current coils did.

Ya coils, plugs and bracket. He is having a great deal on plugs right now also $60. OEM coils are about $28us each (there are 4). It would only cost OEM coils and wires diy max $200 cad including shipping. But the upgrade in my opinion via research, better for the car, gas mileage way more worth it. Ask for someone to buy it for you for xmas

Mike I would just do the battery thing I mentioned asap. If it comes on again get it scanned or take it in. You don't want to be drivin around if there is problem you don't know about. My two cents! I paid an extra $90 to tow mine away from the dealership (5min drive) just to make sure nothing else could get fuked up until I got my coils installed.

I'm thinking about taking it in, first I'll get the code read. If my car was acting out of the ordinary at all, I would have taken it is ASAP.

I'm pretty sure the codes get stored as long as you don't reset your battery.

Well, I figured it was only going to be the gas cap or some stupid thing since the car was running fine. Better safe than sorry, though. Plus, I was due for an oil change, so it wasn't a wasted trip.

As for the 40 or so dollars, I don't know, don't have the bill here. But I think they charged me for .5 hours of labour or something. I'll check when I get home.

Mike here is the link to the reset:
https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/ecu-clear-reset-27548/

MazdaManiac:
There are two reset procedures, one for the NVRAM and the other for the KAM. Neither will erase your radio presets and such like the method SpooledUp7 posted:

1) With the key in the off position, press and hold the odometer reset button and turn the key to on;
Continue to hold the odo button until the odometer reads "TEST" and then release.
2) Turn the key to off and repeat step one.

This will reset the entire PCM except the KAM which contains the sensor profiles amongst other things. You can reset it with the familiar procedure:

1) Turn the key to on
2) Depress the brake pedal rapidly 20 times in a row until the oil pressure gauge sweeps to halfway and back again

I'm bored at work can ya tell

I'm guessing the previous owner never changed them (in fact, I know they didnt) so they lasted 4 years, assuming the problem is with the coils. Is that good?

Ah so they probably just charged you for the oil and filter change and did the gas cap for free. Absolutely! better safe than sorry! No big deal just curious. Would have been really gay of them to charge you for that. I would have laughed if it was a the full 100 bucks.

No no, it was 40 or so dollars for the diagnostic stuff, and then the oil change was on top of that.
