OK well if you haven't done so already there are a load of TSB's for the 04 models.
Like Upgraded starter Computer reflash to help prevent flooding Brake pads Exhaust heat shield to prevent your car from catching on fire And a custom beer tap of your choice. Do you know if you've had any of these done? Link to TSB -> https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/technical-service-bulletins-tsbs-recalls-rx-8-a-14453/ Read through the Issues and Problems area -> https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/ And remember search my friend ... search |
Describe how it's not starting. Is it cranking but just not turning over? Is it not cranking? Did you shut it down with the engine cold the last time you had it running?
On some days right now, my car is taking a full 10 secs of cranking before it turns over and starts. I'm just letting it crank until it starts but 10 secs is a long, agonizing time. I've got spark plugs on order but waiting for them to get here to see if they make a diff. I've an 04 MT with about 57K on it. |
I'm a little north of you, and I use Esso XD-3 0W30 oil in winter - cranks faster, starts (relatively) quickly even at -40*
I have an adhesive 200watt pan heater, for the REALLY cold days! S |
bought the car used, no idea if it's had any of that done, never turned it off cold, and i cranks but does not start... just had oil change done for 5-30 oil... how much is an oil pan heater??
|
^^ I've started mine in -32C and it fired up like a champ.. although that was last winter, this one might be a different story.. :lol2:
|
the recall also includes a new battery; i guess yours hasnt done it, just print off the file and go to dealership. just in case if they dont know about the recall.....
|
and where do I go to get the file???? (if I can get the car started to get to the dealer :P)
|
oh boy .... left click mouse click on link, click file menu then click print.

well I just checked my car's install date, and it's nov 2003, but under the hood it says the following modifications have been performed N232-18881-N anybody know what that means...
|
p.s. is there any way I can tell if I've had any of these things done... (upgraded starter for 1) or not really..
|
I believe that sticker tells us that you have had at least the "N" flash but we're upto like RSTUV ... anyways, get the new recall 4206F at the dealership where they will check the spark plugs, compression, along with all the other old stuff (basically what WCS listed for you).
Now when you say it doesn't start, how long are you cranking. I've found that in -30C weather, it needed about 5-8 seconds of cranking before it fired up. So if you're cranking for only a second, try longer. |
<start Breast feed>
Page 7 or 8 (auto or manual tranny) of this document describes how to determine if your starter is eligible for replacement. http://www.finishlineperformance.com...48-06-1691.pdf You obviously didn't read any of the links I gave you because this was the first pdf link. Dude don't take this the wrong way but you need to do a little work yourself here. Your gonna piss ppl off by not reading the links ppl are giving you. I also believe that if you give the dealership the VIN of your 8 they can look it up in their database. You can also look to see what the rpm is during starting. This should give you a good idea if it's a old style starter or the upgraded starter. I don't know off the top of my head what the rpm's are. I will let you do a search for that. <end Breast feed> |
^^^^ :lol2: Let the flaming commence if the next question he asks is answered in those links
|
If it cranks over but does not start, then your engine is probably flooded. Try the deflooding procedure (gas pedal to the floor, crank for 10 seconds, then turn off ignition and try starting the car again).
|
I hope he found what he needed and I didn't scare him away.
My apologizes if I was a little curt. |
nah had it coming for only reading some of the bulletins :p and I got it started, so now I gotta take it to the city on my next day off (I live 2 hours from the nearest dealer), problem now is the dealer said that if it's off warranty it doesn't matter and I'd have to pay anyways (gotta check the VIN to find date of sale)

Another dumb problem... When I drive the RX-8 and it's totally warm (needle @ 1/2 way on the dial), and I turn the car off, it will not turn on again until the car has cooled some, it cranks and gets to the threshold of starting but won't actually turn over (starts w/ boost though)
Quick Recap of my car from previous posts: 04 MT 63,000 km's According to Mazda all TSB's done (except the beer tap of course) and for the record an oil pan heater saved my ass for the winter, but before I got it put in I had to get a fair amount of boosts, and I searched but could not find anyone with this specific problem, just engine floods, and I let my car run for a min. of 15 mins every time I drive Thanks in advance, and if I get Flamed, at least post your opinion somewhere in the flame! |
I think it is the "fuel flooding" problem, because my car had this problem once.

Clarify for me please. Do you mean it literally will not do anything when it's hot or it turns over but will not start? Really I don't know why I'm asking b/c I don't have an answer either way. <shrug> However if I was you I would look at getting a new set of coils. With 63k on the originals they are bound to need replacing. |
it will turn over, but not start, it cranks @ like 7 or 8 hundred RPM but just doesn't catch... it's kind of annoying because I was trying to teach someone to drive standard, and she stalled and we had to wait like 15 mins before going anywheres again :banghead:

You might want to check the battery.....If it starts with a boost your OEM battery is probably toast. If you've killed it and boosted it a # of times in the Sask winter..It probably never re-charged properly....Plus if you're on the original at 63K...you likely have the end of the battery life anyway |
Jeison - You've got balls to teach someone how to drive standard on your 8. Not so much the potential damage to your gears but if she stalls......I've had such an issue with not being able to start after flooding that the thougth of stalling scares the hell out of me. It's why I don't even dare to use my remote start in the winter.
Good luck with the de-flooding precedure in future. It has never worked for me when it's cold and it seems the more you try the deeper you dig yourself in. Definitely take her to the dealer for the no-start when hot. A few questions/clarification from those who know..... - I was told after the last recall where check commpression/reflash that my 04MT does not need an upgrade starter or battery because ALL Candians cars comes with it already. This doesn't sound like what you guys are saying. - I thought Mazda does not make an oil pan heater for the 8. Can you confirm and advise where I can get one that would fit. |
1- Charge the battery
2- Take out the fuse 20A ( fuel pump) 3- Crank the car for 6 seconds , and wait 10 until trying again. 4- Repeat "3" a couple more times. 5 - Put the fuse back in. 6- Try starting agian. c/o ''deep blue'' Cheers Pete |
