Car stuck @ gas station due to snow... how to get it home.

So..... I parked my car this morning at UC to go on an all day field trip only to return 12 hours later cover in ice. I tried to drive it home slowly but couldn't make it out of this one street, had to push it into a gas station and get a friend to drive me home.. soooo should I

a) wait until the snow melts and go pick it back up.. might be 3-4 days.. can I leave it at the gas station for that long?!

b) wait until they sand/gravel the road and try to drive it home slowly

or
c) get a tow truck to tow it home?

I would have stayed with it. Would you leave you baby out in the cold like that? I would have it towed. Don't you have roadside assitance, I think all rx-8 owners do. I don't know if snow qualifies for a tow but I'd try it. Let me know how that goes.

dying_here 04-02-2007 12:00 AM

oh yeh .. road side assitance.. hmm maybe i will go back tmr and do that..

wcs 04-02-2007 05:40 AM

Let it sit over night and wait for the roads to get cleared and the sanders to come out. Drive it home slowly but just make sure you wash it when you get it back to your garage, especially if they use salt in your area.
If you get it towed make sure you use one of those flatbed tow trucks (car haulers) not the traditional type were your car is towed behind.

Hey I see you didn't put your snow shoes back on eh? It depends on how much you need your car. If you can do without, I'd just leave it till Wed or Thurs at the latest for the streets to be driveable. I don't think anything will happen to it at the gas station, just tell the attendant about it. (Which station BTW?) I've never used Roadside Assistance before and I'm nervous about tow trucks.

dying_here 04-02-2007 11:17 AM

I don't really need the car, so if I can i dont really mind leaving it @ the gas station. I told the gas station attendant about it last night but I'm not sure if he will pass on the word to the next shift. Its @ a gas station across from a big mall, so not some shaddy little in some random neighborhood...should be alright....

Won't it be +20 there tomorrow? No chinook?
Oh wait - that was Windsor.

Where is your sense of adventure? Head out at 3AM take off traction control and DSC and have some fun.

Traction, GRIP, and Braking is for sissy's.

LiTTleRX-8 04-02-2007 06:57 PM

Shoulda checked the weather reports!!

Definitely don't risk driving it home...not worth it...Wait a few days till the roads are warmer and cleared up by traffic...

I doubt RoadSide will help you, but you can try...I've never seen a flatbed tow truck in Calgary yet so...

cloud7 04-02-2007 09:24 PM

most major roads should be dry/wet by now (and not icy)... it's the residential streets that you gotta be careful about.

BlueFrenzy 04-02-2007 09:29 PM

Brother, I thought you swapped back. From my drive back today, the streets were damp but no ice (even in my neighborhood). I'd be afraid to leave it overnight --> perhaps tonight have a friend drive you there to pick it up.

dying_here 04-02-2007 09:57 PM

Aye I honestly didn't think it would be snowing that bad. I've been so occupied with school work lately didnt really pay attention to the weather forecast or had a chance to swap the tires back. the weather seemed nice enough for Sat anyway.. A friend told me it might be snowing on sun but I figured it would just br light snow in the morning and everything will be melted by late afternoon.. the weather was so nice when I left the house @ 7am >< oh boy was I wrong.

Anyway bumped a ride up there this morning and drove it home, so its safely back in the garage now!! the 14 days forecast says nothing but double digits ( or close to) for the next little while after tomorrow so I'll probably just leave the summers on and take the train tmr.

but.. lesson learn.. wont happen again next year haha! ..yikes

I'm working on it... haha... one interesting thing I found about insurance for the RX-8 is that it is cheaper than my RSX Type S... about $100 a year cheaper... haha. I am still looking for a deal that I want... it is taking a long time because I am not in a hurry. I know that we all tend to make stupid decisions if we rush things (I learned that first hand when I got the RSX more than 5 years ago... when I paid MSRP in the car). If it doesn't work out, I am just gonna walk away until I get what I want... as far as I know the RX-8 isn't flying out of dealership. Worst case scenario: I will forget about the 8 and maybe import a slightly used S2000 for around the same cost. :) always wanted a S2000 :cwm27:

dying_here 04-04-2007 10:08 AM

boo S2000 haha... here is something that might also be interesting.. actually not really

but me and my friend bought our cars at the same time +/- a month.. he got a 2001 S2000, i got a 2006 RX8. we are pretty much the same age ( +/- a couple months) and his insurance on the S2k was $750 more than my RX8 a year :D

Do you use the same insurance company? Tickets/Accidents? Do you get discounts for insuring other cars/products with that company?

early 30's crisis 04-04-2007 08:32 PM

^^ i would assume that it is due to the car being classified as a 4 door... more responsible you know :D:
