Adding HP
 

Hey people with great taste in cars!!!

Just picked up my new GS and I'm already thinking of adding some HP. I have 4 years of warranty and I don't really want to jeopardize that. So in people's opinions, what are some safe HP additions we can make to our 8's without risking increased engine failure and other resulting malfunctions from add ons. Are there any customizations that won't eliminate our warranties, or do we need to go through our dealers in order to protect our investments?! :confused:

You can get Mazdaspeed stuff put in your car to avail of full factory warranty. You may also upgrade your intake, exhaust, suspension, flywheel, and brakes without warranty issue.

BTW, you will not gain tremendous amount of HP out of this car, so you may want to wait out your warranty period and go buy yourself a turbo kit and ECU plug-in for much higher gains.

How much HP will result from the basic add ons you listed? How much would a good turbo kit give you? How about a supercharger?

Right now, the only worthwhile mods that will give you power and price isn't sky-high (this excludes the Turbo kit already :D) are the following:

1. Racing Beat Intake and CAI
2. R Flash (free at the dealership)
3. E-Manage or Canzoomer (you would have to tune it to your car)
4. Light Flywheel (no HP added, just feels lighter on the rev)

Anything else is expensive vaporware.

in terms of adding HP without voiding your warranty (FI) there isnt much
get a cz unit and you can add anywhere from 5-30 hp... differnt results for different people

flywheel will pick your revs up quicker and make you feel faster. Other mods will do very little. CAI may add 2-3 HP.

Your biggest gains will be to invest your "mod. money" in performance driver training! When you learn to drive your car "properly" (not insinuating that you don't, just saying you can learn to do it better), then you can start considering "performance mods.", and bonus, you may understand any shortcomings of the car better after the courses. You may also pick up knowledge of how to correct some of them.

Yes you made a good assumption, I do suck at driving this car :p . When I raced Eagle Talons I thought I was king sh*t, but I must say driving the 8 is a whole new ballgame. Although I have yet to stall this car, each time I roll away from the lights, I feel like Danica Patrick coming out of this pits... I need some professional driving courses. Is there anything good offered in Calgary?!

You could always cut weight too, that effectively adds horsepower. There is a lightweight titanium exhaust, lightweight wheels etc.

But, yes, driver training is the best way.
