Guys,

I just wanted to know, with a hot car like the RX8, what are some of the security things you guys consider before you buy the car or after for that matter.... I mean immobiliser/alarm/secuirty steering lock (looks ugly).....we can list them, and we all know that the more we list the more money its gonna cost us to keep em.....but what are some pretty secure things.....i mean im thinking guys who take these cars arent the teeny bopper type, even though they prob. try....its the professional guy...who really does get away with it....i've heard towing is prob, the most effective, and even then you cant bolt a car down, and if u could we live in a day and age, where they would prob. take the whole floor (or section of it) to which it was bolted...basically I've had car security in the past, and thieves can really end up getting whatever they want ....... if im going to chip out so much money, then whats my guarantee (there prob. is none).....but how can I protect it...you all know my pain and anguish......


In addition to it...what are some of the best anti-car jacking measures/protocols on the market........

external security with four female rotweillers, internal security by way of a dozen king brown snakes.

Honestly Daz, park it sensibly, lock it away at night and stay away from the casino carpark.

Get good insurance, easier to sleep that way. I have no security on the car....will be wiring in a reed kill switch when I get around to it , though.

I got an EziTrak personal vehicle tracking and monitoring system put in my 8 within 2 days. Mind you i work at the company and sell it. But i always know my car will be were i left it.

It is good to have a GPS tracking system really. They call your mobile if something happens.

Break it is less in RX-8 unless you leave your diamond ring expose. The component does not worth much as everyone has the same thing. Although I suspect someone will steal the rotary gearknob to sell it in eBAY! Sorry if I busted you hehe :D

How much does that type of system cost out of interest? Purchase + ongoings.

We offer a monitored and a self monitored version.

For self monitored you would be looking at $985.00 for the unit, inc. GST and backup battery but not inc. installation.
Basically you stick in a SIM card, like a normal mobile phone one, if the unit is trigged it rings you direct on your phone &/or sends SMS in about 6-10 seconds. You can also remote kill your engine from your mobile.

For the self monitored there arnt any ongoing fees, only mobile phone cost if the EziTrak has to call you for whatever reason.

Heaps of other cool features too, but if i say much more ill proberly get in trouble from some one on the forum site.

I have QuikTrak with the panic alarm option fitted (for when my wife drives my car..............ie she drives it I PANIC!!!!). They're not cheap $1,800-00 fitted, but you get an additional 10% discount on your insurance from the NRMA and $10,000 from QuikTrak if your car is stolen and NOT recovered.

u mean u could actually get more money back than u paid for if someone steals ur car? e.g. insured value+10,000?

What if you or the car were out of GSM coverage?

That is there problem as they 'tout' no black spots?! (Unless you call a lead lined truck a black spot).

Perhaps they are prepared to take that risk. Lets face it, the overwhelming majority of the population is covered by GSM. Perhaps the unit they use has a stronger transmitter than the handheld mobile phones, like the old in-car mobiles.

We use a similar unit for our asset tracking software that has a internal GPS and GPRS modem built in. Both sub-systems require an externally connected antennae.

QuickTrac dont use GSM, they have a RF Triangulation method, downfall is it doesnt work past Sydney, steal a car in campbelltown and drive south, quicktrac can't do crap.

As for GSM blackspots, unless you want to pay a couple grand and get a system that links into the satphone network you will get blackspots, thing is, a satphone wont work in a carpark without a repeater, however alot of car parks do have a GSM repeater.

Hmmmm, strange that Quiktrak and the insurance companies would warrant the QuikTrak product the way they have, if it was as flawed as you suggest?!

As i have stated many times already.. If the person is a professional he will, leave your QuikTrak and your mobile phone system for dead no matter where you put it they will find it as you only have a limited amount of space you can put such a system.

One of the dealers told me that an RX8 was stollen and the alarm system which also features tracking device ( Not sure what brand ) was left outside the car exactly in the car spot :) As they said to me, if they want to take it they will take it. If its to avoid a kid going to take it for a joy ride the system installed is enough.. everything else leave it to your insurence.

we can't protect our pride and joy with 100% certainly... unless u lock it up and never use it :p.

ah well, we have to take some risks if we wanna enjoy it. but yeh, would be cool to reduce that risk whenever possible.

dun wanna go to extreme measures tho... ne simple ways of improving vehicle security?

Park smart, Always be alert (Car jackings), Dont leave items of value in the car, If you have a bigger audio system do not pump it hard around your neighboorhood or a few blocks to where you are planning to stop.

In burwood Westfield Sydney i have seen now a total of 4 brand new cars on bricks, a type R with no interior, 2 WRX gone missing and owners looking for their cars. This is also not on a Thursday night, but during the day on Saturday and a few Weds.

Dont ever trust that a parking has security guards, in my opinion its the secuiry guards that organise these cars to go missing or things to get stolen.. They patrol to pick up any items they have on the list to look out for.

Good tip on carjackings Choppy.

I drive in the city with my doors locked. I've had one person try and open a door on me while stopped at the lights (before I had the RX-8). I unlock the doors on the highway though... easier extraction in the case of a major accident.
