Too easy!

Hey there,

This morning I did a monumentally stoopid thing...checked the oil and while doing this I put my keys on the corner of the bonnet where the black plastic is, up by the top corner of the bonnet....I had locked the car as I am a security nut. So filled the oil, was a bit low, then pleased with myself I shut the bonnet..and then realised I had failed to get the keys before doing this. :Freak_ani :Freak_ani So I had the boot open, the car locked and I'm stuck at a servo! :Eyecrazy: I panicked and called the WD and asked him to go home get the spare keys and then come to me a 1.5 hour trip. Then I thought about it a bit more. A tow truck had pulled up behind me. I asked the guy if he had a coat hanger or something similar in his truck. He said, "Yeah but I'm not touching that car with it it;s too nice and I don't want you getting angry at me if I mark it!" I said, no worries give the wire to me I'll do it myself. He looked throught the other window while I struggled with the wire....I had luckily left the window on the drivers side open, first stop on the auto down, and so getting the wire in was easy. I had also not dead locked the car which was another stroke of luck. It took me 1 minute to get the door open and was shocked at how easy it was to flick the lock! :Freak_ani

A word of warning from me. DON"T PUT YOUR KEYS UNDER THE BONNET. DON'T LOCK YOUR CAR FULLY AND ONLY LEAVE YOUR WINDOW OPEN SLIGHTLY IF YOU DEAD LOCK THE CAR.....

I am fessing up to this as I feel such a fool and someone else may be saved a similar fate...

As an aside the tow truck driver asked first if the car was a V8....then told me they were wicked nasty beasts....I was surprised at how little he knew!

have a great day!

Thanks for the headsup.

Having locked keys in cars a few times over the years, I've developed the habit of having the key either in the ignition or my pocket when I get out of the driver's seat and never anywhere else.

haha good on u Julia - great thinking.

Ive been lucky. i sometimes when at the shops i'll pop the boot but course by the time i get to sit inside the car sometimes its locked itself, i usually leave my handbag in the boot while im loading up wit whatever.. so i always have to try to remember and double check ive grabbed my bag out (which contains keys) b4 i shut the boot. so lucky so far.. lol Or i'll open the drivers side and shut it b4 i load the car so car wont lock itself again.......

When I was in uni 1 of my friends had a hyundai excel. She locked her keys in her car.. we spent our break outside with some wire trying to get into her car.. lol was funny people walkin buy watchin 3 girls trying to get into this purple hyundai.. ah those days.. we actualy got in!! haha 5min later her bf decided to come wit her spare keys doh! she had tried ringing him but left him a message. men........ he could have rang to tell us he'd drop them off?? lol nooooooooo
nonetheless we were 3 18yr old females quite proud of ourselves.......... lol

I always have a policy of having the keys in my hand before shutting the boot, bonnet or door. I have also been caught in the situation of trying the Jedi levetation trick on my car keys that I can see clearly on the drivers seat after I have locked the car.

Keys in the pocket at all times ....

I guess wearing a skirt may be different :dunno:

Absent-mindedness seems to come with the territory in my game, so I am always ultra-careful about such things. And I always double-click lock the car! It's just so easy to take the keys out of your hand and put them on the floor of the boot while you are loading parcels. I make sure I stuff my keys in my pocket so I can feel them all the time.

I only check my oil level at home, on a dead level garage floor. I figure that the oil level can be influenced when you measure on a sloping surface.

Boot....

Yep, Labrat. Parcels in boot, put down keys to reposition, then slammed shut.

Remembered them, even before the lid had shut......

I keep a spare key (just cut for the locks, no chip, $3!) wired into the hole where the rear tie-down eyebolt goes, behind the little plastic door and invisible even from below.

Wife was amused, but not inconvenienced.......

Even if you wear a business suit with pants the pockets usually are sewn shut....wrecks the line....der....so I usally stuff them in my waistband.....not very elegant...

However I thank everyone for their advice, stories and sentiments..... :wavey: I have made peace with the WD but today he called me to ask where my keys were....I think this will take a long time to live down!! :suspect:

I now have a mental checklist.....as I too have nearly locked them in the boot....won't keep a spare on the car though..even though finding the spot it's a great one...but everyone knows now!! :wink2:

I don't mind people knowing - if they want in, those expensive pieces of glass won't keep 'em out  .

may have to do this - my daughters have locked the keys in the car twice now - the first time I had to break a window to get in (not the 8) 2nd time required a 1/2 hr drive for my wife .
Kids ............

That's a bloody good idea. And agreed - if they want it bad enough, they will have it :uhh: . I'm insured. :D:

well, i unlocked the car and opened the boot
the rest of my car locked itself after 30seconds
thus i could not open the boot from the inside

Yea i even checked,
Do you guys have a lock at the top of the plastic cover that goes into the boot?
thats the first time ive used it just then, but its there and works haha..

It wouldnt make sense for the button to work without the ignition, or the lock to stop people getting into the boot from the inside would be useless...

I wonder is this lock not standard ?
