Spark plug change every 10000km?
 

I think it is very Japanese to change oil every 3000km and change oil (I mean air) filter every 20000km... must be extremely polluted in Japan :o I just saw in the lastest RX-7 magazine (in the RX-8 sport magazine section) that it is recommended to change the spark plug every 10000km. It is getting costly as there are 2 leading and 2 trailing plugs to change.

I forgot when Mazda Australia schedule for their change... but there is no major service until 40000km. So I guess it won't be change until then. Anyone knows? :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:
I think ... was it HYmee... that said there are deposit on the spark plug after a short period of time. I am looking for anyone's experience. I don't have tools to do that but I will ask the dealer to look at it and possibly clean or even change it if required.

In terms of brand, I think only NGK (which we have now) and Denso is available. I think NGK is well known to be good and Denso (which cost the same in Japan) is smiliar in function (a/to RX-7 mag) so it is a no brainer choice in Australia since NGK is a common place here.

I hope not, they are expensive !
I wonder if some peoples plugs will foul sooner because of all the re-flashes that were needed...

Thanks Gomez - I knew you will come with an answer (Gomez the answer man:D). The NGK site stated that the service life is 160000K!!

I may get them looked at after my third track day. It is hard to believe some Japanese actually willing to change that every 10000km?!

I start to understand why there are so many 70% thread tyre selling in Japan - such a waste!

I use NGK BUR6EQ + BUR8EQ for the 20B Cosmo. Change them every 5000km along with the oil

If you guys want good reliability from your engines, then change the plugs often (unless you pay more for the platinums) aswell as the engine oil.

I have seen RX-7's & Cosmo's come into the shop with sludge for oil. No oil change for 50k km. Little wonder the engines fail before they get to 100k km.

Moral of the story is, change the oil & plugs often to ensure reliability & dont trust Mazda Australia if they try to tell you anything over 10k km is fine.

That sounds consistent with Japanese Mag... in fact there are 2 of them saying the same thing... now DMRH confirms it.
I am up to 13000km. Time for an oil and spark plug change. How much are the plugs and I assume changing all 4?

I've heard they are like $80 each ~ but that sounds ridiculous

DMRH, the plugs in the Renesis are Iridium tipped. These plugs have an even longer life than Platinum plugs.....which in some applications are meant to last 100,000K's.

Taka, these plugs are gonna cost a fortune....I'd think twice about changing them just yet. The 60,000K service costs over $1000, remember!

Reading a lot about our plugs - that last more than the original nickel or platinum. Our one is laser Iridium and not the Irdium IX which I think aimed to the older model which still uses the nickel and platinum one. So initially I thought they last 160000km is correct.

Rotary engine is different as it is hot (literally) so I am sitting on the fence between you 2, DMRH and Gomez. I am going to go to Autobarn or Repco to get some rough idea of prices. Anyhow I will ask the service to take them out and inspect and let me have a look (will take pic) and possibly change/clean it next time.

We had our plugs changed to a hotter temp range yesterday at the 6 month service for no charge, after we experienced a little bit of hard to startness the other weekend ( it was 40 degrees and I gave the car a good solid caning for about 20 minutes then a 15 minute cool down drive afterwards) it almost didn't fire then ran rough for a a little while til I gave it a a free rev.. it was fine afterwards though..

The dealer told my better 1/2 they are doing it to a lot of cars ATM cos ppl are still having starting difficulties.. I'm betting it's not flooding it's the plugs fouling.

A friends 12A Extend Port RX-2 rally car regularly fouled the plugs when being shut down when warm after idling at start controls. We pushed her into the very 1st control of a rally once!

Only solution was to remove the plugs, clean them up with some wet and dry, and reinstall (or replace obviously :D)

Taka - Mmmm I guess it depends on what heat range plugs u are running too.... I'm running HKS super fire racing HR8 plugs.... wont last as long as say NGK irridium HR7 plugs.....

People said Denso iridium racing plug that we can get at the Mazda or Toyota dealer. That is what the Denso website said - the distributor is @ the Mazda and Toyota dealer. I have to find out about it.

I will clean them out at 20000km or replace it.

Track days seriously shorten the life of the plugs. No surprises there. Given the cost of the plugs, I wouldn't change them until I knew they were getting tired. It's pretty obvious when they start to go, they'll struggle under very heavy load.

Also, traditionally there have been both Denso and Nippon Denso plugs, with the Jap ones being a better quality plug. Be warned.

If you look at the sides of most aftermarket brands of sparkies, you'll notice that most of them are made by Denso/NGK....

eg the HKS ones are Denso, Apexi are NGK etc

Cost me Y17700 each.... you can get NGK irridium HR7's for about $20-25 each in Australia.....

We have NGK iridium already stock. But Denso/HKS is arractive. I have to find someone in HK that can source that, since I am thinking of a more regular supply --- ? I am not changing it every 20000km right? ;) Hope not.

Might buy it in HK then, added on the list of MazdaSpeed Defi meter and HKS oil cooler.

The guy at super autobacs told me that Apexi sparks were sh*te but the NGK racing ones were about equal to the HKS ones....

They don't have plugs for the RX-8 yet mate.

In fact, the pdf file from HKS Japan listed RX-8 but the rest of the info are empty.

As far as I know from the RX-7 (japan) magazine. The only plug available are Denso and NGKs.
