price check: tyres and brakes
 

Just wondering what prices anyone has paid for new tyres (same as original) and brakes/machining.

im due, 50k

dont get original, get after market ones, cheaper and better!

On tyres, a number of us moved to 245/40 18's, as there's just insufficient choice in 225/45's. pepe (also in Canberra) and I did a bulk deal on Yokohama ES100's, at $395 f&b.

Brakes -- mine are still ok (don't use 'em much :D )

I did a search for the replacement brake and pad from Mazda not long ago by calling around. This are the best prices.

timbo - so your going 20 wider in the tyres? Do they look any different? they dont pertrude and overhang slightly? what brands were they.

taka - i think i'll just machine the rotors for that money.

Not really noticeable. The Yokos --- YOKOS ! Kas! listen Kas ...they're Yokohama ES100's -- the Yokos are an aggressive looking tyre but don't protrude -- in fact they don't have the rubbing ridge the 040s have, meaning even greater potential to curb your wheels....but after 50,000k you know where the wheels are by now, don't you ;)

Seem to be quieter or as quiet as the 040's

BTW, you have to go to 245/40 to maintain the closest fit to the OEM circumference (for speedo accuracy, and to be legal)

I think the 245 actually fits better for the 8"

I go 235/40 because some Japanese mod company's head (Fujita Engineering - FEED) said that it feels the best with the current RX-8's wheelbase. Well.... plus the fact that I got a good deal. The difference in speedo is not much. I checked with another RX-8 on the highway, on cruise control. I read 101 while the other read 100. :)

but I think I will go 245 for my next tyre ... import some Yokohama Advan AE07 from tirerack.com . Oops... They have 225/40 18 or 235/40 18 only :(

245/40R18 Nankangs are the budget option, but I can't tell the difference. $210 per tyre.

the rim protector tyres don't do anything anyway. you have to graze the curb so lightly and basicaly be in a position where the metal wouldn't physicaly hit for them to work. 5mm of rubber can't stop 1.3k kg of weight striking somthing it just squishes and deforms.

I went Michelin Pilot PS2 245/40 R18.. but they were a bit pricey @ AUD$300ea plus AUD$260 shipping plus AUD$146 Duty plus AUD$120 GST plus AUD$50 Fedex fee.
all up worked out about AUD$444ea still cheaper than getting them here.
So far I think they are heaps better than the RE40s. like night and day

EDIT: I got wheels at the same time, so shipping may be a little less because your package will be about 28kgs lighter

mate for $210 per tyre the difference is the other $200 per tyre in the pocket! We'll see how the km's go on them =)

With all the other expenses i have right now like brakes/tyres/50 service/fines/computer (ARGHHH!!) i may have to go the cheaper option.
