Painting brake calipers and warranty

Hey guys.

Going to paint the brake calipers on the weekend.

Does anyone know if it will give me hassle when i complain about brake squeal?

I really want Mazda to sort out the brake squeal so my car does not sound like a bus but want to paint those calipers as well.

Speaking of which, anyone here done them? I know the US guys have done them but I'm not sure what products are available locally.

takahashi 09-29-2006 10:35 PM

VHT caliper paint. They are good until the brake pad reaching 400 degree

Get them in the local auto shop (autobarn, burson, supercheap, repco)

None other better. Engine paints have higher temp but they do not have the nice gloss then caliper paint.

It will not void your warranty in any kind.

Cromax 09-29-2006 10:56 PM

I really don't like ghetto mods ... if you make it look good though, hat's off!

MissyK 09-29-2006 11:50 PM

Like Taka said, it shouldnt void warranty, just make sure u dont get no paint where you shouldnt :)

Just be prepared to dedicate a whole day to it........

Cromax - How is painting calipers ghetto?? Are you saying it is cheap to paint the calipers? On the contrary, it is merely keeping the car looking clean. Have you looked at the stock calipers? They are repulsive. They arent even black, they are a mixture of dark green, grey, black - YUCK. By painting them you make them look cleaner and nicer. That is my view anyway. You pay so much money for a car and then drive around with dirty calipers? Doesn't cost much to buy a can of spray to fix it up a little.

Not saying that every1 should paint them, just I dont think calling them ghetto is right  You feelin me bro? yo yo yo :cwm27:

auzoom 09-30-2006 01:23 AM

Ghetto mods??? Khe!!!

Let me get this straight, you dont like the idea of people painting there calipers because it looks to "Ghetto", but if he can make it look good you'll like it?

As for warranty, in all circumstances, the dealer must prove that what you have done is responsible for any fault.

Do it mogley, makes the car look much better.

mogley, check out the old thread about the brake caliper.

there were many threads about painting calipers including mine.

Cromax 09-30-2006 04:06 PM

Yep, sure, if you feel you should, paint them!

But if you're having problems with your dealer fixing up squeeling brake pads shouldn't you get that fixed up first?

MissyK 09-30-2006 10:04 PM

Omg... painting calipers has nothin to do with brake pads lol
FFS mines been painted and ive had brake pads changed

Soon you'll tell me that my rotary shaped oil cap will void my engine warranty.

Cromax 10-01-2006 12:05 AM

Whoa, talk about jumping the gun! I never said it had anything to do with brake pads.

takahashi 10-01-2006 01:19 AM

Forget about warranty and painting caliper.

Let's go for a new caliper!

Cromax 10-01-2006 01:38 AM

I agree with taka!

Waaaaay better than painting your calipers ;)

FYI

It is not $8000. Much less in fact!

playa78 10-01-2006 08:36 AM

i'm guessing $7000 lol

auzoom 10-01-2006 04:37 PM

Is that with or without the "required" rims???

MissyK 10-01-2006 05:41 PM

I think i still beat Taka in the $$$$ mod department lol My kit cost way more plus my required new rims lol should we include how much she damn cost me to get back onto road after the canary ? hmm lol Shes bad bad bad!!

OK- Nate, how about you get new calipers, then tell us what you think.

--- Anyway im off to panel beater like i said. BAD BAD BAD MISSY!! lol

Revolver 10-01-2006 07:54 PM

I agree that provided you are careful about overspray affecting the rotor, your dealer can say nothing against you on any warranty claim.

I've toyed with the idea of painting them and can fully understand why so many people have done so. As Kall pointed out in excellent descriptive terms - they are bloody ugly, which is a shame considering how well they work for OEM brakes.

I eventually decided though that it's not just the colour. The shape of the caliper is also pretty terrible. I'm going to replace the caliper (and probably the rotor) to get a cleaner, rust-free(!!!) look (and perhaps get a little more braking performance, but I doubt I'd notice it much). Can't say I'm in any real hurry though. Will probably do suspension first. Function before form for me when it comes to budgeting for mods.

I disagree with the "ghetto" comment. There was a thread a while back featuring, from memory, caliper covers that made OEM calipers look like Brembo product. Now THAT was pretty silly but just painting them to get a nicer look is not "ghetto" IMHO.

Sorry to hear that Kall. What happened? Guess it's in a thread I haven't got to yet.

Man,
There is a nice "kit" from Dupli-color that does the work.
I did the job about 1 week ago, and haven't had any problems so far.
Sure, that removing the pads will result on a better job, but you don't need to... I didn't remove it and it looks great.

Take a look on their "instructional video" for DIY! ;)

http://www.dupli-color.com/training/..._training.html

I still need to take a pic of it...

I used that kit on my AE86's front caliper, will be doin' the same on my 8 before I install my techna-fit brake lines, EBC pads and rotors this coming weekend.
