Outback drive - Hymee's locust catcher
Just back from two weeks driving around NSW, Victoria, and SA. Saw five other 8s, but either parked by the side of the road (black 8 by the side of the Ocean Road west of Melbourne) or in towns (2 in Orange NSW, one red, one yellow.) Stayed at Apollo Bay and there was a Titanium 8 Auto with SA plates parked two motel units along. The owner and his partner (well into their 60s) were very enthusiastic about the car.
Met Jax8 in Walcha on the way down - what a coincidence, he was on his way to pick up his Hymee Catback. It was great having a chat. One of the best roads to drive on the whole trip was the section from coming down the mountain from Walcha to Gloucester. Next time you drive Syd/Bris try the inland route! The car performed brilliantly, all 7500kms of it, and averaged 12.5 l/100kms. Used just over a litre of oil. It is a great long trip cruising car - exciting, comfortable and safe. (It is amazing how many cars we overtook after following them through a series of bends - all of them braking when we were urging them on!) http://idisk.mac.com/wallerc/Public/IMG_8813.jpg I thought I'd post a picture to let you know about Hymee's patent locust catcher. Don't travel Outback without it! The aircon worked fine with the grill fully plastered and the engine temp did not move at all. Cheers, Chris |
ic... the grill does do a good job in that case ... well done again Hymee! :D

That's just not cricket(s)!
Great post, Chris....A question....
How was the back after 7500K's? There has been criticism in the past of Pov Pack seats.... Gomez. |
Criticism of pov pack seats!! Where?? IMHO, they are very comfortable -- indeed, having had leather before, IME cloth is more comfortable over long distances.
|
Timbo, I luv em meself....I have a documented dislike of the leather ones....In fact, the seats are the reason I didn't get the leather pack....would have liked the rest of the stuff that came with it.
Somewhere in here there was a criticism of the lack of lumbar support, and a complaint of a sore lower back.... Gomez. |
I think the important thing is to have the seat rake just right, and the steering wheel distance perfect too. Get those right, and it is indeed extremely comfortable.
|
The cloth seats suit us best too (though they are showing some scuff marks). The longest day's drive we had was about 900 kms, Vanda and I sharing the driving, and we felt energetic enough to go out on the town after booking in to a motel. Certainly no problems with seat comfort. In fact one thing that almost all of our admiring friends comment on are the 8's seats.

Excellent, good to hear...!
Gomez. |
DAMN!
try glad wrap on your bumper next time =) bugs peel right off. |
I tried Glad Wrap on my trip to Byron from Adelaide, and it worked for about 10 klicks before it flew off and I went to plan "B" - bug remover.
FWIW, one of two minor chips I got on the paint were - down low on the front bumper, and right in the middle of the bonnet about 2/3 of the way to the windscreen. I don't think a carbra would have stopped the second chip. |
chip is the way of life... don't want stone clip - then don't drive your car...
so don't worry about it. Everyone gets it... I wanted to do long trip this weekend then... any suggestion around Melbourne?? |

Chris
Lets have a hymee grill grasshopper showdown , they obviously love yellow rx8s . Everything you have said about our rx8s is spot on i covered 5400km on my trip to Wakefiel , Melbourne , Goldcoast the rx8 ran like a swiss precision watch , and the constant admiration and attention i got was awesome . cheers michael |
You guys should put those pics in the multimedia section!
|
Michael,
You have a fine crop there. I have just had the 10k service and asked them to check out the condenser for locusts. They charged me for the time it took to blow it out so I assume it takes some doing. You're right, the attention one gets in a yellow 8 has got to be the best. I really like your numberplate. I checked out the PPQ site and see that "RX ZOOM" is still available. Or would you sooner spend the 2 grand on some more performance mods? Chris |
Chris
$2000.oo what a waste got both plates for $730.00 as i also own RX B88 . I have been offered over $ 1200.00 for the RX B88 but i decided TO KEEP THE PLATES FOR THE TIME BEING . In my eyes Yellow always outshines the rest . cheers michael |
