Opps...Ran my oil a little low

Well, i feel totally stupid. Forgot to check my oil for a few weeks and when I finally did I got a nasty shock. I pulled the dipstick out and what oil was there was all frothy!

The car is driving fine and nothing feels out of the ordinary so hopefully I havent done any permanent damage. Might book it in for a service, what does everyone think?

Andrew

Gomez 06-19-2005 08:30 PM

Froth is normal. Check the Tech Garage sticky under Issues and Problems. No dramas.

LittleJohn 06-19-2005 08:38 PM

ummm... don't feel too silly cos I did the same in the early days on owning my 8 as well..
I had the light come on and I freaked out..
30,000kms on and she still ok..
I'll report back at 100,000kms

I can make you feel a little better auzoom.

I pulled into my regular servo on Saturday evening to fill up and check my oil, etc before the run the following day. I carefully put my engine cover against a pole near the bowser so no-one would tread on it. Got talking to the guy who works there while doing it and having a laugh trying to find the dip stick hole in the dark (little glovebox torch comes in handy!!) and next thing I know it I've shut the hood, paid up and driven off without - you guessed it - the engine cover. :o :o

For some reason I remembered not putting it on when I woke up Sunday morning, bolted down to the servo and luckily it had been rescued. Very red faced.

Funnily enough though, in the 15 mins between remembering I'd not put it on and getting it back I had already thought I might just have to replace it with a carbon one!!! ;) :D

So give me the Dumbo of the Week award and cut yourself some slack.

One of the Oz members, Rosso Diablo, did the same thing late last year. He never got his cover back....

The part that shits me the most is that I am not new to rotaries and I have never been more than 2 tanks without checking the oil (it still makes me laugh the strange looks you get checking the oil on what looks like a brand new car).

For those that haven't read the vast number of posts on this topic (like me :-/) there is actually a service bulletin on this topic http://www.finishlineperformance.com...09-05-1450.pdf

All I can say is ... Phew!

Thanks for the reasurance and replies.

I was going to say that...

auzoom, that is a well known fact, but I thought it was not that cold in the last few days....

You parked it outside .. didn't you?

auzoom 06-20-2005 07:04 AM

Unfortunately I always park my car outside and the last week it has been <5 degrees out Eltham way.

Revolver, i can top that........checked my oil few days ago.... I could NOT turn the damn oil cap.. sat there for ages, got a really red sore hand, i was soo angry, then my dad comes home.... I was turning it the wrong way :o
I blame stress of work, and I blame my injured back and my Flu!! How embarressing..... prior to my dad coming to the rescue, my mum told me to goto mazda and get them to do it for me, imagine going there and sayin it doesnt open only to realise i was turning it wrong way

Go on... I'm waiting for the blonde chick jokes. And also that day I forgot to put the cover, leaving it outside by my Dobermans kennel....... next day mum brings it inside, in PERFECT condition. Shocking considering my doberman has to chew up everything and anything in sight. Almost had a fit when I realised I had left it outside. But its all good.... hehehe

timbo 06-21-2005 07:15 AM

Kalli

Repeat after me:

Lefty loosey, Righty tighty :D

Actually, getting the oil dipstick back into the correct hole has always been a challenge for me, and I await with trepidation the day I drop the thing and it gets caught on the undertray or somewhere equally inaccessible

This is definitely one of the less inspired pieces of design on the RX8.

I've been taking lessons from a friend (see pic), and have almost mastered the art of gripping it with the toes and inserting it with my feet.... ;)

Revolver 06-21-2005 06:08 PM

Damn BVD, I didn't know older guys from WA were that good looking!! :p :D :D

Is that your grandson hanging out with you??? :D :D

Oh come on Kall, I didn't want to have to relinquish my Dumbo of the Week award so soon but you're right - you're far more deserving :p :D

Hymee 06-21-2005 06:25 PM

I got Kall on the MSN when she was trying to undo the 710 cap :) She was pretty frustrated.

Cheers,
Hymee.

MissyK 06-21-2005 06:42 PM

Yes Hymee was there in spirit listening to my cursing about how ridiculasly tight the cap was :o

Kas 06-21-2005 11:56 PM

Well my oil light has come on 3 times since my last service 9000km ago. I've also had to put a litre of oil in each time as the dip stick didnt even register any. 3lt per 9000kms ? is that normal ?

My other rotors i believe have not drank that much, nor has this happened between servicing in the past. The most i've put in the 8 within a 10,000 range is 1lt.

MissyK 06-22-2005 12:27 AM

Umm i was told to check my oil every 2500-3000km, I generally put in about a litre or so everytime i check it.

timbo 06-22-2005 12:35 AM

I check my oil every second refuel (c800k) and change the oil every 5,000k. I might add 500ml oil in between -- max! IMHO, both MissRX8 and Kas's cars are showing excessive consumption

LittleJohn 06-22-2005 12:44 AM

I generally go through about 1L every 10,000kms. i.e. I use up the extra litre that is left over from each service.

MissyK 06-22-2005 01:19 AM

I drag the p-plater lil boyz too much in their holdens  oh the fun seeing em crack it cuz a chickee thrashed em :D
depends sometimes its half a litre, sometimes more. when i checked it few days ago it was about 4000km since i last checked it, and it was close to the bottom line thingy, but when i had previously checked it that time it was b4 we went on the melbourne cruise and i hadnt topped it up completley, it would have had 1/4 from the top line. I think i came to the conclusion its approximately 600ml per 3000km.

but i thought it was generaly about that much oil, do you think i should tell mazda next service i'm using too much oil?? ive hit the 15,000km mark, theoretically i shouldnt be using as much as b4 right? apart from the time i had problems with my sparks, due to me not warming up the car enuff and drivin short distances, my car has not had any other problems. since then i warm the car up well and if i do drive a short distance i will ensure the temp has been reached and i havent had anymore problems.

That is about right.

It is really depends on how you drive.

I am a cruiser on the highway normally and the 8 consumes about 200ml/1000km.

When the 8 is at Sandown. I use 1L for 250km

:D

What is it about Holden drivers?

If I'm pottering along at the speed limit, I can guarantee that almost every commodore that comes within range will speed up and overtake me. Having proved how heroic they are, they then usually slow down again.

The other category of driver who always seem to zoom past is young women in Pulsars, or similar small cars. But they always seem to go everywhere at least 10k over the limit anyway, and are clearly not at all interested in what other people are driving. Just always in a hurry I guess. :)

MissyK 06-22-2005 03:25 AM

Mike, Glad I could put a Smile on your face ;)

As for holdens.. its the fords aswell that want to prove themselves. I get the younger guys, i guess they feel all mucho and cool  Other day I couldnt believe this... holden wagon was on my tail then drivin beside me and cutting me off. I end up beside him at the lights, I'd say hes about 35-40yrs old and had two kids aged 5-10yrs old with him in the car. Why be so stupid with children in your car? I wasnt even speeding.. but way he was acting was ridiculas, i sped off to get away from him and then he started trying to catch up.

I had a fellow RX8er beside me at the lights once, i waved at him, he waved back :D He had NSW plates so if your here.... yes that crazy girl waving at you was me :p heheheh
