Hi Guys,

I have a few questions about some of the little things on the Rx-8. Been doing alot of researching and posting all throughout the last 2 years I have been an avid member.
I got my new baby about a month ago and having the best fun in my life in my dream car. (04’ V Red, 120,000km)
However I have a few questions.
1: I took the spark plugs out on the weekend and there was a lot of carbon build-up on the leading sparkplug, but not much on the trailing spark – is that a normal thing?

(btw...a big up to the HUUUUGE help to the sticky threads on this site, the spark plug/oil change pages were just AWESOME help)

2: The guy took it to ProMAZ down here to do the servicing (people from Melbourne will know this place – awesome, but pricy) He recommends and has been putting in 5w-40 in the car, and has been for the life of the car. Is this something that sounds right about the car? As I know there are debates on oils – N

3: Strange question! space-saver-tire...this...horrible thing just annoys me, I hate space savers, but after taking it off I found a strap with a couple of hooks on in the cover of the space saver tire – for the LIFE of me, i can’t see where it hooks onto!!

Im absolutely in love with this car. It’s the hottest most amazing thing I have ever sat in.:yumyum::yumyum::yumyum:

Welcome
1/ not really normal - unless it has been in there a looooong time . Recheck your new plugs after a few thousand kms
2/I use 5w40 synth - but everyone has different preferences around here so ...
3/Throw the tyre away - problem solved.

I agree with Brettus, however I believe points 1 and 2 are related.

I believe that Penrite HPR5 does coke up when used under normal driving conditions after observing abnormal wear of my spark plugs over the time I was a customer of Promaz. Even when asking them to use the oil that I provided, there'd always be an excuse to use their oil.

I find that Motul X-Lite 5W30 and Castrol Edge 5W30 to be perfect in my car.

But, as a point, any oil rated API/SL will be good to use in our cars.

Thanks mate, yeah my car runs pritty nice on it, and am yet to have any problems (about 5,000 off an oil change) but even then, unless im finding some big problems, i would be more inclined to keep it the same oil, only because its running smoothly on it. It makes sense Promaz would do that to you - they are a business. I mean, they charge more than alot of other places BECAUSE they are the best and they are probobly sponcerd by them or somthing. But it is an interesting theory that the oil would create bad carbon build-up. So I will see.

And Tofu. yes - there you have it :p: I dont think Ill go back to promaz for much now - as I'm pritty savvy with doing alot of things myself - only if I get some big issues will I go back...as they are the best! :Peace:
Btw...Tofu, where did you get your MS front from?

More photos to come of the new beast!

Promaz the best? Simon is great and has plenty of experience, mmm but correct me if im wrong Simon hardly ever works on the cars its usually one of his young apprentices...that i dont like...thats why Tim at rx8specialities/extreme rotaries will be doing any work im not confident at doing myself.
Both tofu and i use Tim now after being promaz customers....that reminds me i need to get that promaz sticker off the back windscreen!

Hmm...interesting...where is Tim located? would like to give him a call and a few quotes.

What makes Tim so much better than Promaz? We should all really catch up again at some points, This site is the only chance I get to talk to real rotor heads!:tear:

tofu_box 06-01-2010 11:47 PM

not gonna get involved in this :)

best suggestion is give tim a try and judge for yourself.

Giustino 06-02-2010 12:36 AM

if you want to catch up lookin the .au forum in the vic section trying to organise a meet, greet and drive.

and yep what tofu said.. give tim a try....everyone has different opinions on different mechanics etc! :)

btw my comments were of my view/opinion only and not the views/opinions of tim or tofu :P

Hi mate.. I just went to Tim last saturday, he is a very nice bloke.. I like his work and for me, all of his services are cheaper than Promaz..

He is located in Carrum Downs, and if you need Tim's number, this is his office number: 9770 8656

Cheers, Toni
