Toyota Corolla?
Reliable, handles ok, performs ok with the VVTi engine, good quality construction.

Mazda 3?
Seems to be getting good reviews, not a bad looking machine ...

I travel for business a lot, and usually hire cars in this class (Corolla, Focus, Pulsar, Lancer etc.) and the Corolla is the nicest one to drive.

The Mazda 3's have similar tail lights as the 8, having a set might not be so bad :)

ypwpat 06-01-2004 09:03 PM

Honda Jazz :D

Audioslave8 06-01-2004 09:06 PM

Mazda 3 - great match IMHO.

I'm not sure whether I understand the basic argument: you want to put out $25k to save how much per week by driving a more economical car? How much would you make by investing the $25k? You still want to insure and rego the RX-8 as well, I presume. How does depreciating two cars fit in? What does your economic model look like?

emack 06-01-2004 10:47 PM

A mini moke.................you can hose it out when it gets dirty.........

Labrat, wisdom only comes with age!........

Yep, you hit the nail right on the head. I totally agree with you!

if u want economical get PRIUS2 =D
fuel comsumption of 4L/100km compared to 12L+/100km for RX-8.
plus u are doing favour about pollution problem.
downside, 2months+ waiting list I heard? around 40k?

i was thinking of something like a smart
to answer labrat question, it will also be a present for my other half so that why i need to get another car. She can't drive my car, stall it every second light.. lol...

flatso 06-02-2004 05:08 AM

not understanding what you mean by too much to run? So if you spend $25K on another car this is a cheaper solution? $25K buys alot of gas.

Second hand may be....

$25K is very hard to think of a gun new car.

I am thinking stretching to $31K to a Mazda 3 SP23
Honda Jazz VTi has rear drum.

Have you consider Citroen C3? It is be more than your budget

Barina SRi may be old but a very good car!

I still think Mazda 3 is still a very very good buy.

Hymee 06-02-2004 07:56 AM

Notwithstanding the economic arguments (which make sense)...

Get Mrs. 8A8Y 8 to learn to operate a clutch, or...

I have owned 3 x 323 Astina's and the Mazda 6 we currently have. So I have been a happy Mazda owner. For the price, probably go for the '3. But hey - I am obvuisly biased.

From a novelty POV, I would like to try the Prius, but I am traditionally not a Toyota buyer.

Cheers,
Hymee.

I reckon it is good...

One workmate saying to another, "Oh my god the phone is nearly dead. I need to charge my phone now. Lucky I have my charger in the car."
The other said, "I have a charger for my Prius plugged in as well"

A bicycle

For pure milage the Toyota Hybrid Prius and any VW TDI will fit the bill. Moderately priced, very high milage, long range and comfortable. I drove a friend's new Prius last weekend, it is a nice car, more solid and comfortable than I expected, he claims he is getting 50+mpg in mostly highway driving. My brother has a TDI Jetta, also nice but a little more spartan, and it doesn't ride, shake, or lumber up to speed like the deisels of old. If your primarily going straight down the highway then you'll only miss a little of the fun the 8 provides.

I love my 8 too, but stopping every 5 days for gas does suck.

If it has to be auto I'd go the CVT Jazz - they're ummm delightful! I've never met a Mazda auto I've liked.

DAC17 06-02-2004 07:19 PM

Subaru WRX, Ford Focus SVT or Mazda 3s would all be good choices.

ALMOST, we poor Australians are yet to really discover the joys of modern diesels. Precious few makers offer them here, mainly because our diesel standards are not yet Euro3 or 4 (if I recall) and we still like our big petrol motors.

But I agree. Having lived for four years in Europe, a car with any of the new common rail injection and intercooled turbo diesel engines are quite something. I had a Golf GTDI which had a 150bhp diesel and 6 speed box, which managed one 450k cruise through Germany and France in 3 hrs at an average of 140kph AND 6.5L/100K. I believe there are 180 & 200+bhp versions out now.

But back to BA8Y 8: I couldn't go past the new Mazda3 SP23, especially given she's such a nice lady ;)

Lock & Load 06-02-2004 08:58 PM

BABY 8

Theres an article in this months wheels magazine stating that all mazda 3 seem to be having problems with suspensions , they say that MAZDA is aware of it and is getting an answer from head office as to the problem .

No offence to Mazda lovers but my wifes Honda jazz will eat the mazda 3 in every department , her car has done over 45,000 km and not one single problem .

The Honda JAZZ has one every award possible overseas its a great little /big car .

cheers
michael

takahashi 06-02-2004 09:53 PM

They are both great car.

I will mod the 3. It is bigger and a bigger engine. Honda Jazz have style and more suited for young ladies like Michael's wife.

fueltank 06-02-2004 11:05 PM

Phil,
Mazda 2 is quite nice, for the price compared to a Jazz you can't beat it.

Top model Mazda 2 is right smack on your budget.

If you do go a Mazda of some sort, I can hook you up on a good deal. Just MSN me ;)
