Motor magazine - RX-8 turbo feature
Guys, the latest MOTOR magazine has hit the streets & there is great feature on the RX-8 turbo from Rotor Master.
Check it out , quite interesting.......... REgards |
Thanks DMRH.
I'm glad there is a 24hr newsagent down the road to allow me go and impulse buy a magazine at sparrow fart!! :D Cheers, Hymee. |
That was a gr8 read.
I'd like to draw peoples attention to the differences in dyno results. I am not saying what Joe has done is not good or anything sinister. I'd just like to point out some interesting differences. According to the graphs (publised in the article by Motor, and published on the internet by myself): Joe/Motor Mag baseline = MAX: 154 HP @ wheels (eyeballed) My first "baseline" run = MAX: 177 HP @ wheels Joe/Motor + turbo = MAX: 189 HP @ wheels All my mods (published) = MAX: 194 HP @ wheels The interesting difference is the difference in the standard power output measured on 2 different dynos. As a tuning tool (which is what there purpose is), my mods have yeilded a 17HP gain (10%), compared to the turbo giving a 35HP gain (23%). Now to confuse things - it confused me, as I studied the graph first... Note the text in the article quotes the before figure at 127kW (170HP), whereas the graph shows ~154HP. Since the figures in the text say the after was 141 kW, and that equals 189HP a per the graph, am I correct to assume the axis on the graph must be labelled incorrectly?? Based then on the text, the power went from 170HP to 189HP (+19HP), which is an 11% gain as quoted. Let me re-itterate - I am not knocking this project. The big gains are the low to upper mid-range. That is very impressive, and counts a lot more than the peak. Remember - it is the area under the curve that counts. I am however, questioning the accuracy of the labelling of the graph published by Motor. Congratulations to Joe on a lovely install! Cheers, Hymee. PS - the mag is also now out-of-date. Archie in his GTP tuned 20B ran a 6.99 @ 201 last night :) See here for details: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=31221 |
He said not to push the engine over 7500rpm... what the f@## would I install a Turbo but not to push hard.
They man handled the airbox -- cut and paste to make it work and use normal ECU, manifold and exhaust. Oh my. Stage 2 is the real thing. I will never risk my engine that way. If I want mid range boost, I would have brought myself a V8 or XR6Turbo. Stupid mod if you ask me -- do something, do it properly. See what you have in the Stage 2. By the way, it is done in Japan with Greddy Turbo, ECU and cat back only. Work fine and they have done 6000km testing. That is the real mover for you babe. Keep working RMaster! |
Since I have the scanner out... this is half a page of info.
The mod is very similar to the RMaster in terms of the turbine location. I guess everyone is the same. The intake is modded. Not cut from the stock air box The intercooler is smaller - not that it is not blocking the radiator behind. Just wonder if they have thought of the effect of intercooler blocking the radiator and no cold air going though ??? Exhaust is modded and a E-Manage Piggy back is used to fully tune the engine. This is why I said properly done. Still need a lot of testing for reliability, heat problem etc. I won't be on my car for a LONG WHILE! :D Taka |
Taka,
Regards "Properly Done"? Joe's has a TSI fuel/ignition controller on it, so it is "properly done", yeah? Cheers, Hymee. |
Hymee, that "dyno graph" was knocked up in MS Paint by the looks of it. MOTOR have done this before, it's more of an artistic thing than anything factual.

Taka,
On my first read of the article, I also missed the bit about the TSI controller. The numbered pictures showing all the components at the end of the feature, and the legend, don't make any mention of it. I got the impression it was done without any change (but I was wrong). On second read I saw the reference to the TSI unit, which is what is in my car at the moment (although I have it disconnected as we haven't re-tuned it to suit "G"). Cheers, Hymee. |
Hymee,
Mate, the sound of "mail to the editors" to motor mag to be published sounds like a good idea :D Daryl |

Joe from Rotor Master would be happy to mail out copies of the actual dyno graphs for any that wanted proof. He is a professional & is there to help.......:p |
Thank DMRH,
Good idea. I tried to make it obvious in my post that I wasn't questioning Joe, and I though the problem was with Motor. Cheers, Hymee. |
