Insurance

Guys,

With the impending arrival of my new baby next week, I have to organise comprehensive car insurance.

Those who have shopped around previously, what did you establish? Who should I be looking at/talking to?

takahashi 05-12-2005 07:37 PM

Background: Rating 1 for life, 31, in a safe suburb of Melbourne. Agreed value $56000.

I used to be with AAMI $1386 with $450 excess. Minimal mods.

I am now with GIO $1050 with $1050 excess. Insured all my mods below. And I still have wheel and suspension to go without increasing the excess.

Revolver 05-12-2005 07:40 PM

I'm with AAMI - 34 yrs old, safe suburb in Sydney, no under 25 yr old drivers, no mods (yet).

From memory, got a similar price to the one Taka quoted.

NRMA - 34yr old, safe suburb in Sydney, Garaged, Me only driver, Agreed value of 64k with factory fitted appearance mods, and my choice of repairer and rental car. Covers everything except an act of war...

$1300 with $500 excess

Hi,

There have been a few discussions about Aussie insurance on this forum, so it might be worth a quick search.

Here's one of them:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ight=insurance

I pay $859 to SGIO, but I have a long clean driving record and live in a pretty low risk area.

Good luck with the hunt for something suitable. :)

I'm with GIO. They allow monthly payments (at a slight increase unfortunately) but I saved around $400 from AAMI and GIO also have rating 1 for life. I think I'm paying about $850 a year and when I signed up I was 31, living outer western suburbs of Melbourne, garaged.

Just a tip some of you may find a bit interesting RACV/NRMA & AAMI do not gaurantee to use OEM parts if you have an accident & you don't always have a choice of repairer (check their PDS). It would really suck to spend $50-60k on your new toy then biff it or have some other dickhead head biff it & find that your insurer goes for the cheapest quote to get a repair done. This can affect your warranty & have an impact on resale value.

ILIV48 05-13-2005 01:46 AM

AAMI are renound for using inferior parts from Taiwan etc for repairs. If you talk with most of the top body shops they will not touch AAMI as they do not like being told to use those earlier mentioned parts.

I have the same as Taka... except he is 1 year older than me :-P

Damn... $1,100 from AAMI with rating one, no driver restrictions (other than must be over 25), but living in a scary place (I guess)... The non-genuine parts thing is a concern...

Wildcard 05-13-2005 08:39 AM

$1300 with AAMI. They were the best I could find. Be thankful you are not paying >$2K like some people have to. I can't comment on AAMI's parts policy, but there service is second to none, IMO. I have already had to use them twice. (Doh)

MissyK 05-13-2005 09:39 AM

 I am Rating 2 wit Justcarinsurance and its $2100 for me. But i'm 22 :D well was 21 when got the car.. Lucky im female if I was a guy would have cost me :p No1 else would insure me, I was wit AAMI previously they wouldnt cover me wit the rx8. Allianz wouldnt either. RACV gave me quote $2700.

Bli55d 05-13-2005 02:23 PM

Im with Just cars as well. Rating 1, 23 - paying 2600. pretty much the only place that would insure me for a reasonable rate and i have a clean record as well.

Where does that stuff about AAMI using cheap Taiwanese parts come from?

Page 38 of the AAMI Comprehensive Car Insurance Policy booklet says:

within new car warranty period -- "New OEM (original equipment manufacture) parts will be used except for the replacement of windscreens and window glass for which Australian manufactured Australian Design Rule compliant parts may be used".

outside new car warranty period -- "New and/or reconditioned OEM parts will be used etc etc".

Is someone talking 'friend-of-a-friend' stuff about Taiwanese parts, or is someone saying that AAMI's written guarantee is unreliable? If it's the latter I hope he has a good lawyer and loads of evidence to back his claim should AAMI hear about it.

AAMI's policy is to replace with/use genuine parts unless it is impossible to source required parts new (ie. for older cars), in that case, they allow the repairer to do "exchange" ie. used genuine parts from wreckers ;)

aa@uow 05-19-2005 10:58 AM

I am with 'Just Car'
24 n 22 yrs old drivers
$3780 (can not be paid monthly)

timbo 05-19-2005 03:56 PM

The 'cheap Taiwanese/Korean/Japanese/used parts' story is an urban myth that's been promulgated (I assume) by competing insurance companies or their agents for years about various insurers. It's typically the story an agent uses to steer a customer towards a more expensive insurer...who pays the agent a better commission!

AAMI -- Canberra -- no under 25s -- c.$895

Jellybean 05-19-2005 04:48 PM

Without wanting to seem like a salesman for AAMI,one of the features of their comprehensive policy is that you can tailor your premium and excess. If you want to pay the minimum excess (which, I think, is about $450) you must pay maximum premium (which, of course, depends on age and driving record and isn't hugely different from other companies). You can, however, achieve an annual premium of about $400-$500 (age-record dependant) if you accept an excess of $2000. The point in all this is that, if you can avoid a claim for about three years your lower premium wipes out the extra excess and the continuing lower premium puts you financially ahead of the game. Plus maximum no claim for life.

Of course, if you have a claim every second week ...
