If i want to install new flywheel, should i change clutch disc as well?

Hello,

for those who remember me.. i've imported parts and they are sitting infront of me..lol...

waiting till my exams to finish. ( still uni student )

If i want to install flywheel, should i change my clutch disc as well?

Car only ran 21000kms now. Clutch disc should still be fine...

but i heard that i should change the clutch disc at same time, when i change flywheel. but my disc seems alright... i don't think it has weared out that much.

if i should change clutch disc, who is exedy supplier in sydney?

I recently changed my stock flywheel to MazdaSpeed. I did not change out my clutch, since I only had roughly 11K miles on it. I don't see it being changed out until roughly 50K or so: at the rate I drive. So..depends on if this car is a single owner (if it was used, might be a good idea to have it looked at) AND driving isn't abusive to the clutch. Flywheel install only cost me $370....worth every penny, since by the time I need to replace my clutch, it will be at least 5 more yrs. away!

hi katana, all i have to say is, we would never forget you!! :)

take photos of the parts! lol

oh.. do you ride the clutch a lot and stall the car??

takahashi 05-25-2007 07:20 PM

Do you want a half job done or a job done well.

Change both, a matching set, it is a no brainer.

DrewMan 05-26-2007 12:03 AM

What parts did you get?

get some piccies!

If you change the clutch, it will change the feel of the pedal.

usually heavy duty ones are used for drag/turbo/race applications or people who abuse the clutch.

Its up to you but I would change it since you have the tranny down

rotarenvy 05-27-2007 12:50 AM

I changed my clutch at 32000km with the flywheel. it wasn't necessary as the clutch had little or no wear. I think have bad clutch control so it made me think, WTF do the people with pictures of purple burnt-out clutches you see posted on the forums do?

if there are heavy score marks on the clutch you should replace it or get it re-surfaced.

DrewMan 05-27-2007 01:43 AM

what flywheel did you get rotarenvy?

takahashi 05-27-2007 01:49 AM

Do a search man where have you been?.... shit I forgot too. Did you have an EXEDY flywheel?

Jarl, did you say you regret your decision not to change or you realise you want one too?

I opted for a set so I only take the tranny out once, it is not funny to do it two times ... especially what I went though (..... )

rotarenvy 05-27-2007 02:18 AM

I have the exedy flywheel. in my case I didn't need a new clutch and could have reused the std one for another 60,000Km or more.

I did replace the stand clutch with a genuine Mazda replacement. I didn't think I would need a heavy-duty one as I wasn't intending to use forced induction.

since I have a spare clutch now and intend to fit some form of forced induction, I will be having the std clutch modified to mazdaspeed spec's and go through the operation again.

takahashi 05-27-2007 03:53 AM

I don't think the MazdaSpeed version is rated well enough for FI use. Unless you are not talking about the JDM spec, then I dunno.

Get a matching Exedy single carbon.

rotarenvy 05-27-2007 04:34 PM

maybe the mazdaspeed isn't enough clamping force for forced induction. I'll have to discuss that with the shop when I get round to it.

I did eye off the carbon clutches but since the std clutch is fine for NA power the cost wasn't justified at the time. Also I would need a new flywheel with a carbon clutch and I haven't seen any weight figures for them.

DrewMan 05-27-2007 06:43 PM

what are the benefits of a carbon clutch over a normal metal one (besides being lighter of course). Some of those clutches are in the 1K range and over!

takahashi 05-27-2007 07:19 PM

Stronger, clamps better, more direct power to the drivetrain, more resistant to heat on extreme operation.

Wears quicker.

DrewMan 05-27-2007 08:44 PM

in other words... good if you have lots of $$$

Does Exedy sell a heavy duty kit for our cars yet?

takahashi 05-27-2007 10:53 PM

Both single metal and single carbon plate are available from Exedy Japan. I confirmed with Exedy Australia long time ago that they can get the same.

rotarenvy 05-28-2007 02:10 AM

I was under the impression carbon takes more load with less pressure plate force and less nasty side effects than ceramic and metal friction materials making them more forgiving for street driving.

Know of any brands who sell SiC replacement clutch kits?

DrewMan 05-28-2007 03:00 AM

I went with the ACT HD clutch and prolite flywheel combo.

about 500 all up

rotarenvy 05-28-2007 03:43 AM

have you guys read the broken clutch pedal thread in the tech forum? seems like heavy clutches are causing mechanical failures.
