The downside of owning a Leather Pack RX-8...
As many longer term forum members would be aware, I don't like leather seats in cars. I think they look ratty in very few years, are hot in summer, cold in winter and you slide around in them like a clawless labrador on an ice rink. They don't belong in a sports car....IMO ;)
For the above mentioned reasons, I own a cloth seat equipped RX-8. Many of you however think leather is grouse and have paid handsomely for the privilege of sitting on a bit of dead cow. Bad news folks....the tax man is coming your way. The Australian Taxation Office is targeting owners of cars costing more than $55000 :suspect: . Apparently the ATO has found a number of tax evaders hide their moolah in "high end" vehicles, so they are going to run a special audit on owners of cars costing over $55000. The ATO have liquid nitrogen-cooled supercomputers.....get your affairs in order :) . Full details in the link below: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...81-601,00.html Safely under $55K, Gomez :naughty: . |
They gotta find mine first ;-)

/me rolls my eyes
You are exaggerating way too much Gomi |
All you Auto pov pack people better watch out too. your car is over the "threashold":
http://www.redbookasiapacific.com/au...MAZD06AB&new=1 http://www.mazda.com.au/rx8/prices_pl.asp?id=43 But if you read the article fully you will get the gist of what the Tax dept is getting at and that is people trying to launder money through "used cars". I really doubt a 60K car is the prime target of the tax dept's money laundering investigations. Agent Auzoom out! |

firstly, ato dont like no1
secondly, my car value atm wouldnt be more then 50k thirdly, car is under my personal name, not company name. target is mainly for those corporates who claim 100% expenses for luxury cars under companies. now i really dont know if ato would bother targeting a car thats only few grand over 55k. wouldnt it make sense to target those with M3, M5, AMG Mercs, Porches etc? cars with actual VALUE. |

My accountant argues that the thing to do is to buy an old "classic" car and write off all the restoration, repairs and so-on. This had some attractions until I saw he drives an old Alfa :nono: Made me wonder about the rest of his professional advice :Eyecrazy: |
Privately owned and bought for $53K.
For once I'm safe from the taxman's depredations. :sweatdrop Scaremongerer. :spank: :mdrmed: (BTW, my seats are cool in summer, warm in winter and I've never slipped on them). :p: |
An easy way out of this predicament with the ATO is to show them your lease docs. Just make sure you are not using cash to make the repayments. :bootyshak
I saw a red Ferrari down Lygon street during the Grand Prix weekend with the rego plates "TAXSUX". They will be knocking on his door first. :mdrmed: |

You mean to say that you are one of the very few members of the legal fraternity whos tax affairs are up to date? Shame on you. :nono: You are letting the rest of your colleagues down. :) Greg |

Hi Gomez good to see you have started wearing the flameproof underwear again :Eyecrazy:
Getting away from the tax discussion and back to the oh so lovely leather(pvc) vs cloth debate, as the owner of some classic mazdas I must say that it is almost impossible to get a drivers seat in wonderful cloth without ripped seams on the drivers seat , velour worn off / down whereas the oh so lovely leather seats can generally be found in easily restorable condition . Also with the generally good holding designs of the mazda seats (combined with my ample personal padding) I find I dont slip across the leather but rather slop around with the fat wedged in the seat :bootyshak Happy trails and I am now off to see the accountant xatnep |
Anyway, the good news is (and I can't find it in the online edition) that today's Australian reports that the ATO will be targetting those taxpayers with cars worth more than $70k (suggests "Mazda" will not be a search term) ;)
