Do your headlights project 2 layers of light?

I have replaced my headlights as my old ones were 'clouded' about 2 weeks ago.. now the new pair looks good but it obviously projects 2 layers of light, the closer one is brighter. can't remember if my old pair perform the same way...

What sort of lights do you have mate?

Doesn't the basic model have halogen lights, whereas the "leather pack" has xenon low beam and halogen high?

Are you talking high beam or low and which type of lights?

I can't say I've noticed two "layers" with the xenons, but Ill look next time. I have noticed an amazingly sharp edge to the light with the xenons though. One side of the line it's bright, the other dark - not as much gradual fading from one state to the other as the lights on my previous cars.

I am having the xenons lights and i'm talking about low beam...
you said that '...one side of the line its bright, the other dark...'
Do u mean the closer side is brighter?

BVD 07-26-2005 06:42 PM

I was talking about the line at the left hand side of the road.

Where the light hits the bank, trees, bushes or whatever, the light below the line is clear and bright. Above the line it's dark. The light from the xenons is clearer, crisper and more sharply focused in that way than I've found with other types of lights.

I've not noticed any "two layer "effect, with one layer being closer than the other, but I don't do much night driving. I'll look next time - but it's unlikely to be soon, so maybe somebody else can comment?

There is someone took a picture of the xenon a while back. Although I have not seen it, it is a norm for the xenon.

i noticed that my xenons dont line up in a perfect sharp line, with my right light being slightly lower. may also be a bit dimmer on the drivers side too

skc 07-28-2005 03:08 AM

The right side is a bit lower to protest on comming traffic from being blinded.

However, I constantly get flashed by oncomming traffic ...it seems in protest of my strong xenon light. My lights seens to be aimed a bit high but the dealer has checked this and it seems normal.

BTW I will get my headlights looked at during my next service as they are both showing a oily smear from the inside. :(

My argument will be that this is dangerous as it distorts the light pattern effecting oncoming traffic. :D

My right side doesn't seem to be as sharp as the left. So i investigated,

by removing the guard via jacking the car (lose the wheel if it helps), i found that

my xenon bulb had a green fungi looking build up inside the bulb. I haven't had time

to do check the other side if its meant to be, but it may well be my problem.

I did some adjusting to the right xenon level cause I felt that it seriously wasn't

doing me any good, and doesn't take much, just pop the bonnet, and get a phillips

screwdriver to adjust, this thread

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ing+headlights

Now my lights have a perfect Z pattern but still not as sharp as the left.

I've not noticed any problems with my xenons in terms of height or separating into two layers, although I must confess that after looking at this thread a few times I'm still not really sure what aa@uow is trying to describe.

Interesting to hear some of you are getting flashed by oncoming drivers. That hasn't happened to me (yet) but I've noticed myself that some oncoming xenons at first appear to be extra bright - especially on expensive 4WDs that have them - must be the increased height that accentuates the effect.

I've also noticed that high beam seems a 'softer' more diffuse light than the low beam. Haven't checked the manual but if as BVD says the high beam globes are halogens, that might explain it. Some of you might remember my post a while back about an early morning drive through fog in the southern highlands - I actually found it easier to drive on low beam with fogs on than high beam in those conditions (dark and foggy unlit country roads with no traffic).

BVD, labrat, Gomez - any ideas why they don't use xenons for the high beams as well (assuming I'm right that they don't already)?? Is it purely a cost thing or are they unsuitable for high beam globes??

I adjusted mine a couple of times before getting it right,

and noticed that adjusting too high WILL undriveably blind you, thus i see how

PIMP 4WD's will blind others on the road. So be careful with this one if you do try.

aa@uow, perhaps its the xenons LEFT & RIGHT that are overlapping eachother

that makes it "layered". Or perhaps the light on the same side is creating

a fainter shade of light on top of it, which I doubt is a problem(below).
