Brake Rotors
 

Haven't played with the car in a while and feeling the itch again.

Thinking of replacing the rotors. MikeyR was looking into it as well but he's playing MIA atm, so I thought I'd throw it open to other suggestions.

Taka's brake workup has been well documented. Anybody else replaced rotors with a recommendation to offer?

At this stage I don't want to replace the calipers but that's a probability down the track.

DBA rotors?

Since you'll have to replace pads as well, why not do calipers, pads and rotors at the same time?

I do not recommend the DBA 4000 series.

My rear rotor is just an ugly plate. It burns easily, wraps easily and does not wear as neat as the front Project Mu, which bears most of the braking force. I already machined the rear DBA already. :(

They are both FC forged alloy.... whatever that means :dunno:

Generally, ANY 2-piece slotted design is worth a go. They are lighter, more able to prevent heat build up, and certainly look cooler.

you are talking about say $1000-ish vs. quite a few $1000's for the whole lot. might as well do the braided brake lines while you are at it :D:

are they slotted or slotted/cross drilled rotors? what brake pad did you use with the DBA rotors?

If you read his post carefully he said he wants to do it later ...

... so why waste time on upgrading a few things now which will have to be thrown away when you make the big step anyway?

They are single piece slotted, not drilled. I use the same pad (Project Mu HC+) as it is in the front.

Just to clarify, I do have a set of EBC red stuff ceramic pads that I'm about to pick up (see Sydney Run thread).

I don't really want to spend the $$$ on calipers as well at this stage but the rotors are looking tired. So I wanted some rotors that are compatible with the stock calipers but will also be suitable for aftermarket calipers down the track.

The Project Mu's are probably the front runners at this stage (assuming they're suitable for the stock caliper??) but I'm open to other ideas from those who have already trod this path.

Take the point on the braided lines. That's also a future option I'll look at.

So, any more ideas?

EBC usually sell rotors to go with their pads ... you checked how much they're asking for them?

P Mu rotors are for stock replacement (for your stock caliper) Dave. They are slightly more expensive than the DBA 5000 rotors.

Is there a Brembo alternative? Last time I check they don't make stock caliper replacement rotors, but is there anything close/ same size? AP does not have the same size, when I did a search for my set....

I have to say though that for simplicity and price I think the Project Mu are the way to go. They are readily available for < $1000 and install is reasonably simple from what I have heard.

As for brembo, I found these a while ago as well but were never sure that they were actually brembos.

Dave, i did a whole lot of research and the Racingbrake versions get good write up's around the forums for a reasonable price. DBA's are over $1000 for the 4000's and as Taka mentioned, not great.

Say $300 US shipped is $1200 USD for 4 and it is about $1530 AUD.

hmmm... it is not really cheap. Just a touch cheaper. They don't look too bad IMO. Give it a try and let us know.

Mate the Project Mu are 900 odd dollars for the front rotors only. I would say the Racing Brake are reasonably cheap comparatively.

mmm.... are the P Mu HC+ pads harder compound than your DBA rotors? a quick search tells me their max operating temp is at around 800 degrees, whats your rear rotors' max operating temp? i agree the P Mu HC+ pads will work wonderfully with the P Mu rotors than your mid-range DBA rotors. :hahano:

Why are y'all buying slotted rotors for enthusiastic road/track use? I can't see any real advantage!

The Mazda rotors are $400 each to replace.

That is the reason why.

And they look rusty and bloody ugly unless you keep the paint up to the inners.

Replacement OEM rotors front and rear from Online Mazda parts cost $US 510. Add 50 for shipping and the exchange rate works out at about $A750 for all four. They seem to be a good rotor for street use, but I do not track the car, so I will leave that to others for comment.

$50 for shipping. I wanna see that! They are kind of heavy you know. Even sea shipment from USPS is $60 for just a rear and front rotor.

I place a quote on USPS for 35 pound. That is one front (18lbs), one rear (12lbs) and packaging.

Dave be careful of the GB when you get into these prices. You generally pay in GST/Customs Duty more than what you save in shipping and GB discount.

Dave, hate to be a poo-head, but do you really need the new rotors?

I mean I understand youve done the suspension mods now.. the rims, ur not into any other cosmetic mods.. hmm werent u only going to keep the car for few yrs ?? is it worth spending all this money on new rotors when we know we wont be making our money back. If you really got the mod bug, maybe something thats a little cheaper?

You could be our little lab rat and go have some porting working done to the engine instead of S/C and Turbo... ? lol I cant really think of any other mods, so I can see why you are thinking the rotors - but at the end of the day theres heaps of guys here that continue to track the car - and done many track days - that are perfectly happy with the stock brakes/rotors.

Although im not the 1 to really talk people out of mods....... lol just do what you want! haha :wallbash:
