Does anyone know if rebuild of 13b to 20b is ok with rta guys???
thanks :worship: |
there is a RTA engine transplant requirement/spec for passenger cars.
all depends on the power to weight ratio and what kind of car the engine is going in... i was able to get my '97 astina engineered with a S5 13BT setup for RTA, but it wont pass the emissions (for EPA)... so now i have a spare S5 13BT setup sitting somewhere i can not get my hands on. best to speak to RTA signatory engineer(s) and see if they can give you more pointers/ideas. They will be the ones to engineering certificate the setup afterwards. or... a simple rebuild to the same factory spec would not need to go pass RTA, ie. rebulid 13BTT on a FD to near-factory spec with different seals is okay. |
Qld is often a better base for this type of project ;)

Are the RTA regulations different for every state or why queensland??

BTW - I doubt that the Queensland agency would allow you to install a 20B motor into a RX-8... |

BTW - I doubt that the Queensland agency would allow you to install a 20B motor into a RX-8... If you made the swap look factory & kept the 20B naturally aspirated, then its a good arguement to authorities that you have only added another 654cc. REgards :yesnod: |

REgards :yesnod: Anyway - let's ask the question of Queensland Transport and see what they say... Their starting point is: "Replacement engines that are offered by the manufacturer as an optional engine for that model of vehicle may be fitted. For such conversions, all components, including suspension and brakes, must be identical to those of a vehicle originally produced with the optional engine." (see http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/LTASinfo.nsf/ReferenceLookup/Modification_Jan05v2.pdf/$file/Modification_Jan05v2.pdf) So the question that could be on their minds would be something like - "I wonder what other components of the RX-8 would have been modified by Mazda if they had elected to provide a 20B as an optional engine.." The minimum standards for all of these modifications are contained in the Code of Practice – Light Motor Vehicle Modifications. The document does not appear to be available online, but can be ordered through GoPrint (see http://www.goprint.qld.gov.au/web/web/index.asp?Pg=35)... |
I am sure there must be loop holes in the system as I have heard of many engine swaps in Qld. One of the most popular is the nissan 2l turbo(from 200sx) going into old datsuns. Typically these changes involve tranny and diff exchanges as well.

Happens all the time. The issue is to get an engineer's certificate, and my understanding is that easier in Qld than elsewhere.
FWIW, there's a mid-80's BMW 2002 cabriolet in Canberra, which has a 20B in it. Frightens the odd M3 by all accounts, but I hear the scuttle shake is a bit of problem  |
Like I said guys it is easier to install alternate engines into old cars, but I wish you luck trying to achieve the same with a RX-8... Anyone heard of a legal engine swap in a post 2000 car that was beyond an optional offering by the manufacturer for that model car?
