Did you know the oil pressure gauge is not really a gauge at all ... but rather a glorified idiot light?

What you have to do is dismount the rear wheel speed sensors so the PCM doesn't see speed difference between front and rear. And even that don't work sometimes, because the PCM then sees the engine under load and the wheels aren't moving, and throws it into "limp" mode.

Did you know that if your RX-8 comes equipped with uni-directional tires (as many do) or a tread pattern that is asymmetrical, you should make sure that the tires are rotated front to back, and never side to side?

Did you know that the S-DAIS builds on a shock wave effect discovered in the 1980s rotary engines? It turns out that when the intake on one rotor closes, the inertia of the rushing (and now blocked air) creates a high pressure wave that travels to the other rotor's intake just before it closes. When this wave arrives at the second intake port, it compresses the air and forces it into the chamber ... a sort of supercharging effect if you will. This goes on back and forth between the two chambers
The effect of the wave can be modified by varying the length of the runners to increase or decrease the wave duration and consequently the charging effect.

did you know that this is exactly why the aftermarket intake systems don't work wonders on the Renesis? With the larger intake ports and higher RPM's of the Renesis, this effect is magnified over what it was in earlier motors. Good one derwankel.

Did you know that in October 2004 two nearly 100% stock MAZDA RX-8s set 40 International automobile records including 24-Hour distance and average speed?
These two RX-8s averaged over 212 kph (131.73 mph) for 24 hours and racked up a distance travelled of over 5000 kms (3107 miles) and bested the MAZDA record set in 1991 by the infamous 700+ hp 787B Le Mans winner which travelled 4,923.2 km with an average speed of 205.133 km/h.

Did you know that Mazdaspeed shocks are dimensionally the same as the OEM shocks yet they "shock dyno" at roughly 25% greater damping force.

Did you know that the "yucky" brown film that builds up on your tires is actually a sign that your tires are "healthy"?

This brown film is a sacrificial "wax" material embedded (along with carbon black) in the rubber compound. This wax material absorbs/breaks down ozone which might otherwise attack the tire. The carbon black interferes with UV light which can also be harmful.

When you drive on your tires these wax like materials secrete to the surface and interfere with the ozone. If you've heard of the term "dry rot" in tires, this condition is caused by tires sitting idle, not being exercised and not forcing the wax secretions to fight the ozone effects. Hence the tire deteriorates.

Did you know that Mazda successfully ran their first side port rotary engine back in 1992?

Actually this was played with back in the early '70's as well but due to many sealing issues and carbon buildup, they couldn't make it work for very long. Fast forward 20+ years and technology and knowledge was now good enough to do it.

Did you know that contrary to public belief, the best way to break in an engine is to floor it and drive it very hard right after you start it for the first time? (Make sure it's warmed up first.) It's true! Just change your oil and filter after the 1st 20 miles. This is no April fools joke. Engines broken in this way will make more power.

Did you know that the microphone pick-up for the Bose Auto Pilot is the in the small slats by your right knee?

Did you know that if you hit the "lock" button on the key fob a second time (within a short period), the car horn will alert once to indicate that the car is locked? I think it's a cool feature since I probably don't want it to activate most of the time

did you know that if you open the driver's door this after-shutdown window functionality is defeated?
Moral is ... roll the windows up before you open the door, otherwise you need to stick the key back in

Did you know that there were several MAZDA rotary engines prior to the production 10A for the Cosmo?
The first MAZDA rotary engine was the single rotor 40A. This was a testbed engine used for feasibility studies and was heavily based on the original single rotor NSU Wankel motor.
In addition, there was the dual rotor L8A displacing 798cc. This was the engine in the 1963-1964 Cosmo prototypes. There were experimental one, three and even four rotor versions of this particular engine produced
Utimately, the 10A was produced for the original Cosmo. It was a 982cc dual rotor engine. The rotor housings were chrome plated sand cast aluminum, the side housings were aluminum that had been sprayed with molten carbon steel for strength, the rotors were cast iron, the eccentric shaft was of expensive chrome-molybdenum steel and the apex seals were aluminum and carbon.

Did you know that the minimum speed you can set the cruise control to is 16.7mph

Did you know that the IPW (Injector Pulse Width) on a cold started engine ("N" flash) at idle is approximately 50ms. Did you also know that the IPW at 3000 RPMs can be as much as 30% less than at idle ... or roughly 35ms.

Did you know that your power steering motor is protected from overheating? If the steering is continually turned from lock-to-lock, current to the motor is halved. It will gradually return to the full rate 15 minutes after the steering wheel is left at rest. Cycling the ignition switch will also reset the motor current

Did you know that if you drive a Sport-Shift AT RX-8 that you are strongly encouraged by MAZDA to hit the redline a couple of times a day to reduce carbon build-up caused by "cruising"?
This offers 3 huge benefits:
1. reduces harmful carbon build-up on the apex seals
2. actually helps to prolong engine life
3. puts a big old grin on your face
But seriously, MAZDA is seeing a statistically higher number of AT engine failures because owners actually don't drive them hard enough. It's true ... you can drive your car too gently.

Did you know you can clear the NVRAM on the PCM?
1) Turn the key to OFF
2) Press and hold the odometer reset button
3) Turn the key to on (NOT START)
4) Hold the odometer button until the odometer reads "TEST"
5) Release the odometer button
6) Turn the key to OFF
7) Repeat steps 1-6 (one more time)
This will reset the PCM NVRAM, but not the KAM (Keep Alive Memory). The NVRAM stores fuel trim values. The KAM stores sensor profiles (such as the eccentric shaft profile).
Disconnecting the battery won't do it ... NVRAM means it won't be cleared by loss of power.
Oh ... and there are a series of "test" procedures that can be accessed once the "test" word appears. Just press the odometer reset and you'll see them appear one at a time. These are not much good and not intuitive without the WDS

Did you know you can clear the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) on the PCM?
Typically this would be done following maintenence on, for instance, the eccentric shaft. Not the type of thing you run around doing all the time.
Anyway, the procedure is:
1) Turn the ignition to ON (not START)
2) Depress the brake pedal 20 times in rapid succession
The oil pressure needle will sweep to mid gauge and back again indicating the procedure was completed successfully.
You must be quick, and you do not have to press the brake pedal hard ... just good taps.
The PCM stores fuel trim values. These are basically "learned" compensations for Air/Fuel ratios (AFRs) based on a myriad of inputs from O2 and other sensors.
Essentially these values enable the PCM to adjust injector duration (how many milliseonds to spray fuel) to try and reach a prescribed/programmed AFR. The adjustments to the injector cycles are made based on the O2 sensors telling the PCM what is happening (i.e. how much O2 is coming through the CAT) as opposed to what the PCM "thinks" should be happening based on it's programming.
These trim values are "learned" based on how you drive the car. If you are changing your driving style, you can force the PCM to calculate new adjustments by flushing the NVRAM.
It's not the sort of thing you run around doing. Guys with turbos and piggybacks are having to do this fairly regularly because the PCM fights to provide AFRs based on factory settings which the piggybacks and turbos are trying to overcome. It's just pretty cool that it can be done.

Did you know that RX-8 retractable keys have changed?
On 01 Apr 05, RX-8's from the factory bound for the US have keys that require a longer push on the trunk release button to unlock the trunk. You need to hold the button down for .7secs. The old key was .05secs.

did you know that some airport security folks are confiscating these keys as they too closely resemble the proverbial switchblade?

Did you know that MAZDA purposefully designed the lower UP paddles on the Sport-Shift A/T equipped 8s with a steel sheet core and plastic surface instead of aluminum to keep the paddles cool yet strong when exposed to hot summer temperatures?

Did you know that OEM 2004 RX8 wheels were made by two different manufacturing companies?
One was made by Hitachi and the other by U-Mold. There is a stamping on the inside center of the wheel that will tell you which company made yours! The manufacturer changes if you have the AT or MT. MT 18" wheels were made by Hitachi.

Did you know that if your RX-8 is locked and you press the un-lock button on the fob and then you do not open the door within 30 seconds the car will re-lock itself back?

Did you know that the rear bumper on the 2005 RX-8 is manufactured from re-cycled resins reclaimed from used bumpers as part of MAZDA's "green" recycling initiative?

Did you know a quart of 5w/20 fits perfectly in the locking storage compartment between the two rear seats?

Did you know you can re-program the behavior of the Air Conditioning (A/C) in your RX-8?
Many 8 owners have complained about the performance (or lack there of) of the 8s Air Conditioning as being anemic and lacking vigor. Particularly early models. Well, you can change that.
Now first of all, this only works on cars produced after 09/2003. If you have a very early production model you need to get the original A/C amplifier replaced under TSB 07-002/04
To improve the performance of your A/C do the following:
1. Make sure the car is off AND the HVAC fan is off AND the A/C on/off button is off.
2. Press and hold the front defroster (on the left) AND air source (bottom) buttons
3. Continue pressing the buttons in step 2 and turn the key to ACC for 3 seconds
4. Continue pressing the buttons in step 2 and further turn the key to ON (NOT START) for 3 more seconds
5. Verify the programming update by observing the REAR defroster LED blink 3 times.
6. Release the two buttons from step 2 and start the car
When you turn on the A/C with the MODE button set to FACE and turn the thermostat to full COLD (max counter-clockwise setting) the RECIRC should automatically engage. In addition, the amplifier should put out colder air (~ 5-10 degrees F colder and not just from the RECIRC setting) and the compressor will not cycle nearly as often (which some of us found annoying).
Note: This programming change is not persistent. If the battery is fully discharged or disconnected the procedure needs to be repeated to re-enable the settings.
Frankly, since I implemented this procedure, my 8 has been far more comfortable AND it has been danged hot here lately. Don't you just love all the technology in this car?

Did you know that there is a switch behind the glove box door and next to the glove box that allows you to activate/de-activate the electonic trunk (boot for those of you down under ) release. This enables/disables both the electric switch under the drivers side dash as well as the key fob release.

Did you know that the Australian market Auto RX-8's have a 4.300 diff ratio, while the US/Canadian ones have a 4.444 diff ratio?

Did you know that the auto-dimming mirror automatically un-dims when you shift into reverse?

Did you know that the range of your keyless entry transmitter can be significantly increased by holding the transmitter under your chin while pressing any of the buttons?
And you can increase it by another 30 yards if you haven't shaved in two days!

Did you know that there are two automatic levels of illumination in the interior lighting? When the doors are open ... there is a bit more current flowing through the lamps to cause them to illuminate just a bit more than when the doors are closed. I'm guessing around 20% brighter ... but I don't have a scientific way to measure it.

Did you know that if you drive 8 km/h or slower, the seatbelt chime will not sound when you are without seatbelt...
(on a Swedish Rx-8 that is, not sure about the rest of the world.

Did you know that the rear floor mats are marked left and right on the underside

Did you know that the mazda service bulletins published by Rosenthal Mazda can be found on http://www.finishlineperformance.co...tins_index.html (if I typed it right!) AND that these bulletins DO work? Got me a load of stuff fixed on my old 8 that's for sure

Did you know that the R26B 4 rotor LeMans engine had a sliding trumpet intake system that altered according to rpm? OK most knew that! However do you know how long it was fully extended and at different rpm's?
The system adjusted the intake length from a full 20.66" (not including the thickness of the rotor housing) fully extended to a short length of 13.75". The full length was used from idle all the way up to 6250 rpm where they started to shorten continuously until 8250 rpm. The car was shifted at 9000 rpm.
Another did you know... Did you know that the motors that adjusted the length of these pipes were actually 2nd generation RX-7 headlight motors that had been modified! Got to love parts sharing!
Did you know that all 3 spark plugs per chamber all fired together with no split?
Did you know the Cermet coating used on the housings of the R26B engine are so hard that a lapping table can't even scratch them?

Did you know those 8's equipped with NAV have at least 2 satellites tracking your car at any given time?

Did you know, that when the Nav in the 8 loses the sat. signals that their are sensors in the wheels that count the rotations until a signal from the sat.'s is returned.

Did u know that there are several much cheaper sat nav systems other than the mazda factory fit, that you can simply un-plug and use in other vehicles, for example Garmin etc

Did you know if you have the spare tire kit, you can get a "little" extra storage space in the trunk by unzipping the tire cover and using the space within. Not much, but it's there. Good hiding stuff as well if you are so inclined

I am sure you knew that if you failed to open a door within 30 seconds after hitting the unlock button the car will lock it self.
But, did you know that it would flash the lights when it re-locked itself.

Did you know that with the new flash, when you floor the pedal and hit redline it will bounce between 9500 and 10000 for as long as you hold it? Neat feeling.

Did you know the the rotors in the RENESIS are approximately 5% lighter than the previous generation 13B rotors?

Did you know that the RX-8 recorded the shortest ever braking distance recorded by JNCAP (Japanese New Car Assessment Program), stopping from 100kmh in just 38.6 metres
It also earned six out of six stars for both driver and passenger protection. (Full-wrap frontal collision test, Offset frontal collision test and Side collision test).

DID YOU KNOW....that the main stability control system sensor (detects sliding, twisting, skidding as "yaw") sits at the exact centre point of the vehicle, right between the front seatbacks, in the console.

Did you know that the stall speed of the torque converter on A/T equipped vehicles is between 2400 and 2900 rpms?

Did you know... that Chevrolet experimented with and built a 4-rotor 427 hp Wankel rotary engined Corvette prototype in the early 1970s. Emissions and fuel economy doomed it.

did you know the mercedes benz had a 3 rotor putting out 430 hp on the board ready for production around the same time as well?

Did you know that suzuki had a 535 cc wankel rotart street bike in the late 70's

Did you know that the hood of the RX8 was supposed to release from the windshield side? Would be nice if there was an aftermarket kit that did that

Did you know the seatbelt/shoulder harness windup motors on the new VW Beetle are tiny rotary engines.

Did you know that to change the automatic transmission fluid you have to drop the transmission pan - there's no drain plug.

Did you know that all 8's have a jack in the trunk reguardless if they have a spare tire or not.

Did you know that if you push the window lock button, it keeps you from being able to roll down the passenger window from the drivers side too?

Did you know that when you use the switchblade key to lock your car, on the third press of the lock button your car will honk to say "I'm locked, quit worrying

Did you know that UK spec 8's don't have the function that allows the passenger side window to go fully up or down with one press of the switch?

Did you know, that if your tires spin on wet leaves, the traction control warning light does not come on to tell you your wheels are slipping?

did you know that I have never been able to find one person that had to pay to get their car de-flooded! I personally spoke to Mazda USA and was told it was not a warranty item anymore, but for some reason the dealers seem to still be covering it!

did you know that a rotary with open pipes is one of the loudest engines out there,....... or that a 13b will cause corvette mufflers to explode?

did you know that in puerto rico most of the 8's are seen during night hours

Did you know that to be able to keep my BB-8 Clean I have to give it a bath every 2 days and wax it every other saturday.

Did you know you can reduce CD skipping by increasing speed to 65-70 mph through those pothole riddled twisties?

Did you know that the 6/disc Bose system plays MP3
I thought that was if you ordered it as an MP3 player from the factory options? I think that is the case in the UK.

Did You Know that the instrument panel lights dim, but the warning lights Do Not? I think that's pretty cool.

Did you know that if you disconnect the battery, you must turn the steering wheel lock to lock, left/right for the DSC to reset itself.

Did you know that the Moonroof opens only with one touch

Did you know that when you are 6' 3" and remove the sun visor is adds about a 1/4" (give or take) more visability

Excluding the motor: Did you know that the RX-8 has 27 triangle shapes?

Wheels = 20 there are 5 triangles formed by the wheel design per wheel
Seats = 2 the seats have the rotary emblem
Air dam = 2 front and rear have rotary emblem
Shifter = 1 is a rotary emblem
Hazard Swtich = 1 every car is a triangle light on it
Steering Wheel = 1 the 3 point steering wheel is unside down triangle shape.
Total 27 Now the if you start adding all the rotary dress up accents the score goes up, I was taking this from a more stock perspective. Did I miss any
2 ... one in the frame of each projector headlight
there is the one on the hood
There's one on the engine cover. Two INSIDE the engine

Did you know.
That if you set the cruise control at a given speed in a certain gear and then change gears that when you re-engage the cruise it will return to the previously set speed, not the engine RPM?
In other words, set the cruise in 5th and when you press the clutch to shift to 6th the cruise will dis-engage. If you hit return for the cruise control, the cruise will return to the speed you set in 5th gear. Unlike my truck or other cars, which return to the same throttle position.

Just finished reading all 26 pages of this one - very interesting...
Hadn't seen this one:

Did you know
that if you put a full quart of oil (as suggested in another post), or a large flashlight, or any other fairly heavy object in the compartment on the back side of the pass thru, that in a sudden quick stop, said objects will fly forward to greet you in the front seat?
The pass thru seems to like to come "un-hooked" at its base.
Ever since this happened, I only keep small, light items (like rags) there.
EDIT: well, according to others, I'm either not installing the pass thru correctly, or mine's broken... b/c this hasn't been a problem for them.... Maybe we can take this one off the list. If so, my bad.

Did you know...that you can get 10 foot long lumber into the 8. And still close the trunk! I got two 2x4x10's in through the pass through then down in the passenger footwell, eight 4x4 deck posts in the trunk with one more on the front seat. I had a 12 foot board hanging out the trunk a bit a couple days ago.

Did you know that the RX-8 used in "Tokyo Drift" had a Veilside body, Toyo Proxes (P245/35R19 front and P255/35R19 rear) tires on Volk Racing GT-AV wheels, Greddy single-turbo system, Tanabe cat-back exhaust system, Tein springs, Nardi steering wheel, and Takata seatbelts. Also, the hood looks carbon fiber, but isn't; but the rear wing is carbon fiber.

Did you know that if you delete on error the nav system software from one of the nav "secret" menus the driver door big speaker will stop working until you reinstall the nav software?

did you know,
with some careful trimming that the greedy front strut bar will work with the engine cover.

Did you know that the first RX-8 off the assembly line was Velocity Red

Did you know that the park lights flash when you close the hood?
Only if you set the alarm before closing the hood. If it does it every time, and when the alarm is off, then you've got an electrical problem or somebody has monkeyed with the wiring.

Did you know that, on the console, Pressing POWER+PRESET #2 turns on a not-very-useful "level=" on the display that shows signal level as you tune the radio?
Press and hold the TEXT knob/button and DISPLAY for a second, then allows you to adjust the contrast of the display with the TEXT knob(not the backlight level), 8 is default.
I don't know what this does exactly or what it is for, but press and holding TEXT+PRESET #3 puts it in an odd state. The volume jumps to 26 (WARNING, QUITE LOUD IF #3 IS SET TO A STATION), most or all other buttons are disabled, except an onscreen number can be changed from 0 thru 9 by using the SEEK/TRACK/APC button (WARNING, VOUME JUMPS UP AGAIN IF YOU HAVE TURNED IT DOWN). When this number changes, the sound output changes in volume and which speaker it primarily comes from. I suggest storing a VERY weak station on #3 before trying this. Haven't tried it with a CD running yet. I don't know if is some kind of fine-tune or an equalizer (as someone else suggested). Maybe it's a function designed to work with European radios or a special adjusment CD.
That 3rd one may be a way to test individual speakers since there are 9. It may also be the "some gearhead is going to try every combo on the panel,

Did you notice that on the fuel gauge Mazda placed five graduations between 1/4 -> 1/2 and 1/2 -> 3/4 while only placing three between Empty -> 1/4 and 3/4 -> Full.

Did you know that automakers intentionally make fuel gauges lie for psychological purposes?
The needle will stay on "full" longer than reality so you won't feel gyped a few miles after filling the tank.
To catch up for staying on "full" too long, and to prep for the next lie, the gauge (gage if you've got a GM) will quickly go through the middle third of the range, where you'll notice the movement less.
The gauge will read 1/4 earlier than reality and move through the bottom 1/4 tank slowly to increase the odds that you'll see it in time to fill up before running out.

did you know that when you lower you 8 with springs you can manualy readjust your head lights leaving the auto leveling sensor in place. this can be done by removing the upper inner front wheel well cover and turning the 8mm plastic nut on the back of the headlights?
