FAL fans, I wish Ihad known :)

Damn Danny, I have been running the FAL 420 setup for a while now and I have been recommending them to people all over and now I find out you carry them cheaper than anyone else?

I wish I had known :)

RotaryTherapy 05-08-2013 12:05 PM

Yup. Danny is the man. :)

Just want to clarify,

420 vs 440

What's the difference, FAL spec rates both at 2500cfm

Thanks

nycgps 06-10-2013 03:36 AM

Does it mount at stock location ?

ShellDude 06-10-2013 05:34 AM

Looks like I'll be buying some fans.

2500CFM versus 3000. I have the 420 and it works great but more CFM's can't hurt. Since I got my setup Hoss-05, Houstonrx8er, and two other people have run higher flowing 440 setup without issue. I just didn't want to apend the extra cash to run the 440 at first since no else had run these models on an 8 and I wanted to make sure my measurements were right and they fit, etc. They are loud though. BUt even turbocharged my temps are cool. It's the best cooling mod I have done hands down.

It does, you just use radiator pins to secure it to the radiator. It has a really nice rubber seal that runs around it that sits against the radiator. All you do is cut the connectors off your stock setup so you can wire it in to the stock wiring harness. Or you can but the FAL controller and use that, it's a really nice controller. But I wanted to still be able to use the Cobb to change fan settings so I wired it in to the stock wiring.

You will not regret it.

houstonrx8er 06-10-2013 08:06 AM

Just for the record I am running the 420 fan and you can modify 2 of the brackets to fit the stock mount for added strength but the pins are still required

9krpmrx8 06-10-2013 08:11 AM

Oh I thought you got the same ones Hoss did :) They worked great the other morning though when we were stuck in traffic :)

Carbon8 06-10-2013 08:35 AM

I found a deal on the 420 today, 241.98 bucks shipped.

So I jumped on it. Im sure I will have no problems seeing as you are in texas and run them.

Also this is a dumb question, but where can I get radiator pins?

Thanks for the info Scott.

9krpmrx8 06-10-2013 09:15 AM

Great deal man, that is a steal.

9krpmrx8 06-10-2013 09:26 AM

I am sure Danny could get both of these items cheaper :)

Carbon8 06-10-2013 09:32 AM

Deleted the link, as I did not notice it was a vendor section, I feel like a jackass for not supporting Dan :( I have always had great experiences from him.

houstonrx8er 06-10-2013 10:34 AM

damn I wish I had ordered them from there...I thought I got a good deal saving $40 on amazon...ugh

Information correction bump

Seems like there is a mistake here or the model numbers changed. Both the Flexalite 420 and 440 are the same 2500 cfm rating, but the 440 is a pusher fan setup and the 420 is a puller fan setup just like OE. Do not order the 440 set!

I believe the correct 3000 cfm fan setup is the Flexalite 490, which is reversible and can be setup to either push or pull. Be sure to wire it to pull thru the radiator like the OE fans.

They both have the same 26.25” x 15.5” outer shroud dimensions with dual 12-1/8” fans, but the 420 is a lower profile @ 2-5/8” tall and the 490 is a higher profile 4” tall with more aggressive blades and stronger motors. The FAL 420 rated draw is 22A, the FAL 490 rated draw is 29A. The S1 RX8 cooling fan circuit has a 40A fuse.

as an alternative, Summit Racing offers two dual-fan assemblies similar to Flex-a-lite in flow and size that are slightly less expensive. However, I saw some feedback comments that stated they had one of the two motors quit running after a year or two and Summit doesn’t offer a replacement motor. This would force you to buy an entire new dual-fan assembly. No guarantee …

SUM-G4850 is approx. equivalent to the FAL 420; 2600 cfm and 24.5A rating, 26.375” x 15.0”

SUM-G4851 is approx. equivalent to the FAL 490; 3100 cfm and 26.5A rating, 26.0” x 15.0”

the Summit fans had some bad reviews last time I checked, maybe better stick to the FAL fans instead.

Do you think the 490 is overkill for a stock power car with aem intake to free up flow behind the radiator?

TeamRX8 11-24-2023 10:38 PM

hold your horses, shouldn’t be much longer :suspect:

but that’s the replacement to the 420 coming off.

pretty sure 9k said Hoss and maybe others ran the 490, think he only had the 420 on his turbo though.

It doesn’t really free up flow though, it just provides more thru-flow at low speeds if the OE fan on/off strategy is still running the show.

folks, i am prepping for in install of the FAL420s but the oem wiring diagram doesn't seem to agree with my car. Fan #2, passenger side which uses red and black (R and B), is straightforward. however, the driver side fan #1 on my car is blue and black wires. the FSM seems to suggest i should be seeing blue and green (L and G).

Do you know which wire on fan #1 (driver side) is positive? i can use process of elimination from there! ;-)

Thanks, Ricky. and false alarm folks... turns out my OEM wiring was just really dingy and was discolored. My harness DOES match the mazda wiring diagram once i cleaned off my wires! So i'm all good-to-go, i've been taking a bunch of pictures of the mounting and the new radiator foaming because the forum talks about it alot without pictures, so this should help others. stay tuned.
