Nor CAL / Bay Area HPDE Track Day Schedule

List of HPDE (High Performance Driving Experiance) track days in the Northern California/ SF Bay Area.

Over the past 3 years I have attended thunderhill about 15 times but on average I only see 1-2 RX8's on the track, this needs to change. More RX8 owners need to use their cars for what they were designed to do, drive. I will be adding and updating to this thread so please subscribe and check in on it every once in a while for updates. I will try to add track days ran by local clubs that allow any cars to drive because they tend to be the most affordable. If you like my idea and are interested please post, I would love to hear other peoples opinions. If you know of a track day that I have not posted, please PM me the information and link and I will be sure to add it. If you have experiance at a track Good or bad, please post. Thanks and I hope the the information is helpfull and gets used.

Who should go to a HPDE/ Why should you go:
You dont have to be a great or confident driver to take your RX8 to a road course and have fun. You just need to enjoy driving and have a desire to become a better driver. Many orginizations and clubs offer instructors to help you learn the course and help you safely push yourself.

Our cars come with great brakes and a great suspension from the factory, stock tires could be better but they will work just fine if you dont want to spend the money on track tires. Check with your insurance company and you will find that many will cover you in case of an incident, which aside from an occasional offroad excursion resulting in a few paint chips, nothing realy ever happens. Think of it this way, you will learn to be a better driver which might save youi from a big accident in the real world where accidents can kill people. Dont get me wrong, pushing your car and your self on a race track is dangerous but it is legal and it is in a controlled enviroment which greatly reduces the risk.

List of road courses in the Nor-CAL/ Bay Area that offer a HPDE

My list is not all inclusive, so please PM me if you know of a road course that offers a HPDE that I have not included.

Thunderhill Raceway Park, 5250 Hwy 162 Willows Ca., 95988
This is the only track I have driven. 3.0 Miles, average time around the track is about 2min 30 Sec (About 70MPH ave speed), 15 Turns, 2 long straights and 2 semi straights, Safe Runoffs, Elevation Changes and only 2 walls. It is very safe, if you go off track you will likly drive away with nothing more then soem dirt on your car.

I have added a few more orginizations and added several days to the schedule, including a date at infineon raceway put on by NASA. If their website is correct, the cost is only $159 per day which is a great deal for infineon.

I hope people find this information usefull and are subscribing. Feel free to post your thoughts and if you are intending to attend any events.

They are so much fun, if you dont have the ZOOM ZOOM bug before you go, you will shurly have it afterwards.

With some track days as low as $149 it is the cheepest way to get out and truly enjoy your car, just be sure to budget for gas, most tracks charge about 25%+ more then a local gas stations. You can drive in with a full tank and maybe go fill up during lunch break to save money but if you have FI it is a good idea to mix some 100OCT fuel in the tank to play it safe.

Here is a link to the Laguna Seca calander of events.

http://www.laguna-seca.com/pages/Calendar

Looks like skip barber takes up a large amount of track time, I believe they only put on race schools which run about $1500+

http://www.skipbarber.com

I do see that track masters has the track November 25th, Hooked on driving has the track on december 4th and Golden Gate Lotus Club has it december 26th. I will look into these and more and add the info.

I have signed up for the On The Edge track day on Nov 10th. Check it out, it's pretty cheap. I've seen half days go for that price ($280):

As far as experience, I've done quite a few track days with Trackmasters and it's always been great. They even managed to squeeze me in last minute at the last Laguna Seca event, so I'm thankful! Doug is a great guy and they have great instructors too if you want to use one.

damn thats chill dude you were talking about doing that, i did the drift class they offered up there, was 435 for the whole day and they swap out your tires on your car, it was cool because they let me come back the next day for free and do a few runs. Sonoma we gotta meet up and go to one of these events for sure now.

Hey Sebtown good to hear from you again! I've been pretty impressed with the crew at Jim Russell. I'm going out on Monday morning to watch their Formula Test runs they do for the JR Champ Series. I'm thinking about going through their racing school.

Are you going to the Ultimate Santa Cruz Meet in April? I think they are up to 60+ Madzas so far, all different models, would be nice to see a good 8 showing.

Highway8,

JR was great, top notch instructors, you get what you pay for, one of the instructors was Tyler McQuarrie and my 1 on 1 instructor for the track portion was Tony B. who was one of the drift drivers for the Tokyo Drift movie, but really all the instructors were great, I'm taking my brother in the summer when he gets is new ride (he's a Miata guy).

The course was one day, 1st half was drills split between a bunch of runs around turn 11 into the straightaway and then a sharp 90+ turn, fun! Then some salomon and lane changing/breaking drills on the drag strip.

Track time was after lunch, it was about 2.5 hours with a break in the middle. Which the day I did the course it started raining during the track time, so the break was nice to relax a bit and collect my thoughts, the second half of the track time was much improved.

As far as cars, we had 9 students in the class cars included a mix of Porch (1 turbo 911, 1 Cayman, 2 911S and a Boxer), a Subby WRX, a Lambo (one sweet car), a Infiniti G37, and my 8.

Glad to hear you were driving your own car but for that kind of money you can get a lot of track time at a HPDE. Many of which have instructors. But the important part is you got a lot out of it.

Yes, I have since found many more options around. I'm fairly new to motor sports as a hobbie and I live about 15 minutes from the track, so I had stopped in one day to JR and well, the rest is history.

It really changed my driving style for the better.

Thanks for putting together this post, its been a good resource already.

I will probably be attending the May 1st 2009 event at thunderhill with NCRC. It $125 for five 20/25 minute sessions. I want to see some other RX8's attending. The solo (intermediate solo) and race group are almost full. Point by and driving school (Newbe) are still open.

I'm going to run with Speed Ventures @ T-Hill this Saturday.
Bled my brakes & swapped in brake pads this weekend, so I'm all set.

It's $185 and i believe there is still room for signups....it should be a low-car-count type of day as SV is more of a SoCal-focused club.

Updated the first post with 2011 track days for NCRC and GGLC which are my 2 favorite organization.

I will be participating in the ncrc time trial series so I will be attending almost all the NCRC events in 2011. Starting with thunderhill on march 5-6.

Hope to see some rx8's there.

If there are any new people, the driving school is excellant and is no extra cost. If you want a personal coach the whole day there is a small fee. I will be signed up as an instructer for all the driving school events, so you can request me when you sign up or just PM me and I will do it for less.

And here is one of my track videos from thunderhill. This is a NA video but I should have the supercharger for the entire 2011 series plus a series of suspension and aero improvments. I expect to take 3-4 seconds or more off my lap times.

Thanks for posting this. I don't know why I did not see it before. Since NASA is not going to Laguna this year, i might very well sign up if schedule allows. Thanks!
