"You won!" ads

I have this issue with some car-related websites on my mobile phone(Android based, if it makes a difference) now. Every time I try to access RX7Club, RX8Club and even RoadandTrack from Chrome, I get "You won!" ads. Desktop versions are unaffected by the ads.

I have done some testing on my end. It seems to be website issues, as I have an old Android phone that was factory wiped and it had the same problem, and my roommate, who had his Android phone connected to the mobile hotspot from my phone, suffers the same issue.

The temperory solutions: clean your Cookies and disable it by default. If that doesn't work, disable Javascript, though that may also affect the website you are trying to browse.

Can anyone with Android Chrome replicate this issue?

I would ask the site administrators to look into this. Thanks!

Did you use the same google account on all installs of Chrome where this occurred? Because Google ad targeting travels with the google account, not the device. Actually, technically it travels with your identity, which could spam multiple accounts. Your friend connected through your hotspot, so your IP, so they got him too. Ad targeting isn't just a bunch of cookies these days.

I haven't had that issue on Chrome PC or Android.

Yeah, I was researching this issue and I think I read something among the lines of account targeting.

My old phone was factory reset, so it wasn't logged into anything. My roommate's on his account, obviously.

I was actually at a restaurant away from the house when I created my mobile hotspot, and that was based off the phone 4G data. The other tests were done on the home Wi-Fi.

There is someone at the Accord forum reporting the same ads, but when I went to the Accord forum on my phone, I didn't get any ads. Very strange.

I'm just waiting for targeted meatspace ads based on retinal scan like they had in Minority Report...

Hmm, it's gone now.

I still get ads on the mobile version of this site, but not nearly as aggressive.

FWIW, I get ‘em too. iPhone SE on both Safari and Firefox. Car sites only.

I saw the same stuff when I went to it on my iphone.

You'd be surprised how well modern browsers will block ads like that by default. It's likely just embedded into the site.

Have you guys tried Firefox Focus for iOS? It integrates into Safari and seems like a pretty good ad blocker.

I get the same thing. It comes as an amazon ad, and is quite convincing.
