I was owned by a Formula 1 car Monday (VID)

One of the fun / scary things about doing HPDE’s is that you never know what someone might show up with. I was at Watkins Glen Monday and Tuesday and on this one run I was passed by a 1992 V-10 equipped Formula One car. That thing was so loud it was painful. Apparently there is a market for older race cars and the guy that owned the F-1 car needed a place to test a new tranny. Now if I were to get hit by a F-1 car would the insurance company still believe me when I state this was a driver’s education class??

Windows format of just the F-1 car (5.7 MB) right click / save as.
QuickTime format of the FULL 20 minute run (29 MB) right click / save as

Awesome! But was that a C5 and a Viper being passed right at the end of the short vid?

Why were they lollygagging?

Yes a C5 and a 1st Gen Viper. That video doesn't do justice as to how scary loud that F-1 car was. I think they just pulled over to let that car through. That run group was the advanced intermediate so they were not noobs.

Wow, that has to be intimidating to be on the track with a F1 car. I remember when I was walking to the first Formula one race at Indianapolis and I could hear the cars from 2 miles away. I can't imagine how loud they are when they're next to you with the engine revving in the teens.

I don't think that was the Benneton. I've seen a Benneton at the Glen before for the Vintage races. The one I saw was Michael Schumacher's ORIGINAL F1 Car.

Dood, Expo. Why'd you let that Exige pass you?!!
Actually, I can't believe he didn't point by the F1 car on the front straight.

Not quite an F1 car, but I was on track with some crazy cars at the Glen last October. I've posted this before, but here it is again:

Nice Vid, Expo

Expo1 --

Glad to see you got your wheels tightened up from SP

Nice driving. The F1 car was just plain cool sounding. I can guess how loud it was but it sounded very cool. I also noticed the S2000 that gave you a point-by and then drag raced you on the back straight -- schmuck...

Wish I was there. I may be done for the year. Can't seem to find the right combo of event and my schedule.

Nope. That's a Brabham Judd BT60B. Very distinctive livery. The number eight car would have been driven by Damon Hill that year. Oh, and it was originally equipped with a 3.5L Judd V10.

he was probably giving that F1 car about 20 percent of it potential, pretty cool though to have one of those lapping beside you. On a side note, I'm kinda of getting tired of cars pulling so hard on me on the straights, have to work so hard to catch back up to them in the turns =)

That Exige driver is an ***. I don't care what street car you're in, if an F1 car pulls up behind you they get pointed by at the earliest opportunity.

So after discussing this with my friend, he seems to adamantly believe that the exige could out-handle that 1992 f1 car... I told him he's smokin something good, but he got me thinking... If anyone here could enlighten me, as i don't know much about f1 cars of 1992 in general, it would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard it said that an F1 car has sufficient down-force to travel upside down and remain planted. I don't think that can be said about much else on planet earth.

Modern F1 cars can generate upwards of twice their body weight in downforce allowing them to pull more than 4 g's in a high speed corner. I don't see any lotus pulling 4 g's or even half that.

The Lotus driver didn't give the F1 car a point-by on the front straight like he should of. That's why it looked like the Lotus was " hanging" with the F1 car. Once he had some room the F1 car dusted everything on the track.

Not to mention that the F1 car has at least three times the Lotus' power.

Don't confuse handling and speed. It's not inconceivable that the Elise handles better than the F1 car. The F1 car will still obliterate the Elise in ever contest of speed, straight line or corner.

I can't find a skid pad number but I should think the F1 car would obliterate the Elise (not to knock the Elise). A Dodge Viper doesn't compare to a dragster.

Learning to trust my brakes more. Since I drive my car to these events I tend to " hold back " a bit. There are certain key turns at the tracks I go to like turn 1 at Watkins Glen. You master that turn then you can fly through turn 2,3,4 and down the back straight. I need to " lose it " a few times in a part of the track that is safe so I can get to better know the limits of my 8.

Well the thing is might start braking at the 300’ mark for example and smoothly slow down when in fact if I hit the brakes harder around 100’ I would still scrub enough speed to navigate the turn. I am happy with my RB sways, strut braces and R compounds so all I need to work on is ME. So far I only “ lost” it once at Summit Point but quickly corrected and never spun it out. That track is not as fast as the Glen or Pocono so I wasn’t in any danger. I just need more track time which comes down to time and money.

you probably want to bring a tow vehicle (eg truck with trailer) and trailer your 8 to the track if you really want to 'test the limits'

driving your track car to the track to do track events usually means holding back just a tad so you'll have a complete car to drive home in
