High pitched whine.

Engine has 1k miles on it and its making a higher pitched whine when at idle and gets a bit louder at higher rpms. Doesnt sound like rattling, but it is a new sound. Any Ideas?

Sounds like your intake. have you done anything to it like maybe a k&n Drop in filter?

did you buy new or used?. since you say it is doing it at idle, i'd almost think it may be the throw out bearing instead of the intake. does it do it with the clutch engaged? if it only makes the noise when the clutch is out it's the bearing (normal) but it's more of a contact sound than a whine.

if not, check your bocx and the hoses connected to your intake it could be that one lis loose, any excess air coming through there will give you a whine sound.

New, and put 1k miles on it. Its an automatic (and ya it runs fine). The noise seems to increase as I accelerate (in neutral or with friction on the road), but gets drowned out eventualy.

Well I guess I will apply my super computer diagnostic skills to take a look at the car. Its funny, As someone who runs a computer business, I speak to alot of other repair shops and know how bad and incompetent they are, while trying to sound convincing. Most people wouldnt know the difference weither the computer guy is BS'n them or not. I feel the same way when it comes to cars lol. Not knowing everything, I realiez how easy it would be for a mechanic to BS information and I would never know. Sigh.

did it just develop this whine? Did you follow proper break in procedures?

Yes I folowed the proper break in period to 1k miles. (I actualy have 1400 miles). Its a quite noise but its enough to be annoying when your conserned. When I get a chance I will pop the hood and see if i can locate the area where its comming from.

Sounds like the intake to me, but I have a MT. Does it go away if you step on the gas? If so, its normal.

intake bx sits on the right beside the battery. it will have 2 hasps to remove. if it's getting excess air, you should be able to hear it.

Is it a pinging sound? Very high pitched tone?

Ok Got a chance to open the hood (at work). After driving for 20 minutes, the plastic is too hot to touch, and the metal burns instantly (ouch!). With the hood open, it sounds like a high pitched whine, like you might expect from the belts (but higher pitched lol). Its coming from the center part of the engine, like where the alternator is (silver motor). I looked at what I could see and nothing seemed lose, and no air was getting sucked in though a lose air filter / air assembly. I did not get a chance to open the intake assembly as 1. its too hot, and 2, im at work and didnt want to get into something new yet. I will. I will.

Edit: no pinging sounds, its consistant. I liken it to the refreash buzz on a CRT monitor (electrical), but only louder.

Mazda said *during oil change.

Dont worry about it this engine makes a high pitched whiny noise.
Also brought up the fact that when I press on the break while the break cyclnder is pressurized, it makes a clicking noise (just started). Also normal.

So if they arnt BS'n I guess all is clear. Thanks.

it happens when you get a shinka convertible. You'll get all kinds of noises out of nowhere.

Is the whiny noise akin to well the classic refference of a jet engine? Or does it just sound unnatural, at low revs with the windows down I hear a whine but again it sounds like that jet engine reference everyone seems to mention.

The brakes clicking every so often I think somewhere in a "Rx-8 Facts" thread is the ABS testing itself.

Do you run the car with the vents on? Because usually you get a whine with that, and also, the car naturally makes that sound because of the intake, but it gets more pronounced when you have the AC/vents turned on.

Since the vents are always hot... i dont see a need to keep them on. But thanks for the support. At least i know its not like a failing "insert expencive part here" manafold.

Do you have a radar detector plugged in? Is it possibly coming from the audio system?
