Unhappy Check Engine - twice in 3 weeks

About 3 weeks ago i brought my 8 in for service because the check engine light popped on, so the dealer checked it out and said they flashed to the latest version of the ecu and all should be well. Today it popped on again?

Has this happened to anyone else? Also on a side note, both days it was raining very heavily, what are the chances that my 8 is one of those cars that just doesnt like the rain

do you have an Autozone nearby?

I just ask because they will let you use their code readers for FREE.
That way at least you might be able to see what is causing the CEL.

Rain? What's that? I live in So Cal...

Does it come on and stay on, or flash?

I got my second flashing "cel" last night -- getting onto the interstate- winding it up in second and just about to shift to third- it starts flashing at me- now since I am merging into speeding traffic, it's hard to pull over right away - so just shift through all the gears to 6th and maintain speed about 60 and it stops after about a mile-

This is the second flashing "CEL" I've got, last one turned out to be a front rotar misfire - I got the latest flash when I took it in - think I'll hold off and see if it happens again before I take bnack to the shop -

I just bought a used 2004 with 20K miles on it and drove it back from California to Phoenix. It wasn't until the next day that the check engine light came on and has stayed on since. It drives wonderful and no issues. I talked to the guy I bought it from and he said he had just taken it to the dealership to check it out and had the light reset as it comes on all the time. I'll take it in to get it checked but would be nice to know the code to look for or at least compare codes.

My titanium 8 is a 2004 with less than 12,000 miles. Two weeks ago the check engine light came on while drive 70 mph on the highway. Took it to the dealer the next morning. They said the engine was trying to lien out the fuel mixture too much. The dealer tried a few things , but the couldn't fix it. Mazda shipped them a part two days later and the light still stayed on. The dealer said Mazda wanted them to ship my engine to Mazda and they were sending me a new one. All of this at no cost to me. The new engine should be in next week. Does this sound right? The dealership has been very good to deal with, even gave me a loaner.

8driver it sounds like they suspect you have an issue related to the recall being talked about in the other thread. but there is also an issue with injectors and injector harnesses causing too lean conditions. check the other posts i made today as i posted information about the possible injector issue today.

New engine for free...sounds good to me. Gotta love it when Mazda actually cares about our warranties.

Just a bummer you'll be out of your RX8 for so long. They give you the usual Mazda3 loaner?

They gave me a Mazda Tribute, which is coming in handy. I just moved and need to haul a lot of stuff for the house. Can't do that with an RX-8. They asked me if I wanted something else, but the Tribute is kind of nice for a change.

I've been checking a lot of other threads and agree this may be part of the recall. I'll let you know how it turns out, when I get my 8 back.

Finally took it in for service and it turned out to be a faulty seal on the gascap. They said that it has probibly been like that for months, so why couldnt they realize it last time?? It took them 4 hrs to find the problem, and then 2 more to realize that they didnt have another gascap as a spare part so they needed authorization from the gm to take it off of an 05.

At least its warranty work...

Finally got my car back last week, 8/3/05 then went out of town, so could drive it for 4 more days. The new engine looks different. Nothing major, but the cover and some parts are different. It seems to drive the same, at least I can't tell any difference. The CEL hasn't come on yet.

How about taking some pic to show us the differences? That would be very interesting.

I'll take some photos this weekend. Wish I had taken pictures before the change was made. Didn't realize they'd change engines when I took the car in for service.

Check Engine..

I have had kind of the same problem. I have had the car in the shop twice now and I have had my car only about four months. The first time they told me something about reprogramming the engine. The second time they said it was the gas cap and had to order me a new one. Last week it came on and I was going to take it back on a Monday as it happened on a Friday. I drove out of town on a day trip that Sunday which was about two hundred miles. On the way back home I made a stop and when I turned the car back on, the light was off and has not been on since. Its been about a week now. If it comes on again...back to the shop!!!

The engine is the same as the one they took out. If you have the cover on you can't see it anyway.

Was the code a P0455/P0456 both times?

I justy dropped off my 04 with 10K miles for the 4th time in four weeks. I have had the traction control light and check engine light come on in varying driving conditions. I lose power and am forced to pull over and turn off the car. When i turn the car back on the CEL stays on but the cars drives fine to the dealer. They seem to be baffeled.

Did you get the code on this trip?

We can solve this with Zoom's help.

They don't know....

I took my RX-8 back to the shop and it stayed there for four days. They said they could not get a code. They wanted to keep it longer and drive it back and forth to see if it would do it again. I told the guy that there seems to be a problem with the RX-8 because others are having the same problem. I printed up some information from this forum and gave it to him but he isn't going to read it. His reply was...."Oh...you can find plenty of stuff on engine light problems on the web.." I told him that this was just on the RX-8. He didn' t say anything.

Afterwards I went to see the Sales manager. The Saleman who sold me that car isn't working at the dealership any longer. I told the him that I had purchased the car back in April and it has been in the shop three times for the same problem since then...and that is crazy for a new car.

He asked if I would be interested in a New car with the same equipment and I told him I would. I told him that my yellow RX-8 is acting like its color...a lemon. He said he would talk to Mazda and let me know.

I will be surprised if they do it from what I have been reading here about Mazda customer service.....

It came on again...

Yes...it came on again. I took it back and they kept it for about a week. They called Mazda who told them something about replacing a pump that is in the gas tank. They did that and tested it. They said they hope it does not come on again.

I had asked about getting another car because of this problem. They said Mazda said since it was not the same code each time, they could not consider it a lemon. It has to be the same problem three times in a row....I guess.

Anyway I have a feeling that its going to happen again. I will let you know....

If I were you the next time I would request to see the code reader with my own eyes, you can never trust what they tell you, also if your nearing the end of your warrenty get it solved before the warrenty is up, another guy had a problem like yours and they kept dicking him around untill his warrenty was up and then wanted him to pay for half the engine.
