2nd Award 4 Rx8 Engine???

Those of you that have FLOODED your engines and get really poor fuel consumption from your cars will be elated to hear that the RX8 RENESIS ENGINE HAS WON 2nd year running .
THE international engine of the year award .

To my mind an engine that cannot be properly tuned as yet , for differing markets and one that has a tendency to FLOOD READILY , AND GETS CRAPPY MPG .

CERTAINLY SHOULD NOT BE WINNING ENGINE OF THE YEAR BUT POSSIBLY .

POTENTIALL ENGINE OF THE YEAR AWARD .

I dare not mention the fact that the RX8 rotary may not be producing the power output claimed by MAZDA ???

Your post is filled with half truths and misleading statements.

It is difficult to flood the car with proper use. Even more so now with M flash.

The MPG isn't anything to write home about, but it isn't that bad either.

The power output is just fine. They had to make last minute changes due to US regulation. We have after market options to gain most of that back. Regardless of what was done to the NA version of the RX-8, that does not change the actual output generated by the engine that is getting the award.

The engines winning the award obviously have not been tuned for the US or the AUSTRALIAN markets .

Engines do flood in AUSTRALIA and UNITED STATES .

Petrol consumption is no where near what mazda has stated 8 lt per 100km ????

I HAVE NEVER FLOODED MY RIDE BUT HAVE BEEN CLOSE TO IT ITS NOT A NICE FEELING HAVING TO BE CONCERNED WITH THIS ISSUE .

They may be catching up with the power output but i originally paid for the correct output from the beggining and not to possibly get it a year after purchasing my car .

This car has got the potentiall of being a great car but for the time being it has got its flaws.

I am prepared to admitt that my car is not perfect , unlike some of the members that refuse to see the negatives of the RX8.

I'm not happy about my gas mileage, but I did my research before I bought it, and I was well aware that I'd most likely get around 17-20 mpg range. My car gets exactly that range.

But the flooding issue you're focusing on should not be something to dwell on, just don't turn off the car immediately after starting it up!

Amg i actually stalled my car today coming out of the drive way.. Did not wait but 20 second before taking off as i had to get my overcoat into the car too As i was reversing a silly little dog ran past my drive way so i hit the breaks and stalled it at the same time.

I thought of you right away... i switched the car right off and then tried to restart it as per usual and it worked perfectly as if nothing happened.

How do you drive your car normally? Do you hit high revs at least once per drive?

I believe i have the F flash as my car was picked up in Feb of this year.

Surely one of the most basic features of any engine should be the fact that you can swicth it ON and OFF without any issues on numerous times .with out FLOODING

This car is hopeless on short trips on and off situations .

People should do more research on Rotaries.. I have never flooded a rotary before and i actually have done stop/starts before with no problems with this car and a friends RX7.

No NA turbo timers no nothing..

A person that services is car at the same place i do has flooded his car over 3 times.. But he drives it slow and the car hardly every goes over 4 1/2 thousand RPM this is no good for the car. Hence it floodes many times.

Regards
Phillip

p.s could be that its colder in SA.. I dont know about QLD but Michael.. its interesting.

Not quite. You can turn it on and off all you want, AS LONG AS IT HAS WARMED UP!

Even when my engine is warmed up doing a few short trips and switching the engine on and off , and even going slow can effect my starting up .

Correction L&L!

The sticker stuck to the windscreen on the car when I first picked it up said... 12.6 L/100km I should have kept it somewhere in the book.

Choppy, people should not have to do research on rotaries before buying them. The limit of their knowledge should at least extend to the cars fuel economy and it's redline....these are (from a users standpoint) the main differences between a rotary and a piston engine.

AMG has obviously had more experience driving rotaries than you or I with our floodless rotary history.....Ipso facto, if anyone were to flood, it should have been you or I.....

Other factors are obviously at play here.

I've done nearly 6000k's and my car gets used daily. I have redlined it twice....once, to see what it was like, and once so that my brother could experience it!. Mostly it'll struggle to get over 6000rpm on any particular drive. I don't see a correlation between low rev driving and flooding.

No-one has done an extensive survey, but here are a few of my observations....

Flooding has occurred on cars with a good spread of mileages.
The Yank's have (had?) it far worse than us.
Experienced rotary drivers also suffer from it.
The "M" flash in the States has largely solved the issue.
AMG and rotary4me had not driven their cars for several days prior to their flooding.
E, F, and G Flashes have flooded...(donaldc, rotary4me, AMG).

Can we draw any conclusions? Yes.

The "M" flash changed the duty cycle/pulse width of the injectors during start....less fuel equals less flooding.
Cars that are shut down before reaching operating temperature can be prone to flood on the restart. This is what happened to AMG, even though his early shut down was accidental.
IMO, battery condition may play a part. A battery with a lower than usual charge will not crank as fast nor supply full voltage to the ignition.....and AMG's car spends most of it's time in the garage.....

Hell, I've run out of time.....gotta see a man about a dog

Gomez.

Gomez interesting comments about battery charge. When i picked up the car the service guy mentioned that the WDS picked up an error message relating to low battery charge. I just put it down to trying to start the car up whilst it was flooded.

The RX8 WAS ADVERTISED AS THE USER FRIENDLY WIDE APPEALLING CAR NOT THE HARDCORE ROTARY THAT THE RX7 WAS .

YET I WOULD NOT LIKE IT IF MY WIFE OR ANY OTHER FEMALE GOT STRANDED BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT START THE CAR OR FLOODED THE CAR .ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT OR WEEKEND

I redline it on every drive as often as ispermisseble however most people drive the RX8 especially the auto fairly sedately .

You should not have to be an expert on rotaries to be able to enjoy the RX8 .

L & L, it's not quite that bad, however MA does need to recogize there are issues that concern the drivers of these cars. After all we have contributed to their profit and as every business knows word of mouth is the best ( & cheapest) form of advertising. However the flooding and potential non-starting is of great concern. Imagine the safety concerns if a wife, daughter, girlfriend manages to stall the car leading to a flooding problem non-responsive to a dechoking procedure. Let's set the scenario: Late at night, nobody to call, and only a car full of drunken footballers manages to stop to render some sort of "assistance". I guess you can also guess the legal implications.

After a year, you would have thought the whining would have stopped...

Seriously, same as always, don't like the car? sell it and buy a four banger, 1.5L car that will give you 5L/100km on the freeway... It's a sports car, we all knew milage would suck before we handed over our hard earned $$$... the fact that MA are updating cars to fix this issue is pretty damn good I think.

MA is helping to address the issues with efficiency/flooding/etc with updates, etc I'm sure they'll continue to improve the car too and I'm sure if you're civil to them, they'll take care of you. If there's a serious flaw with your particular engine, take it back to the dealer and get it fixed under warranty. In the mean time, a few simple precautions should ensure you don't face problems...

I don't know why I feel compelled to respond to one of L&L's SHOUTED whinges which, as has always been the case, is based more on him not getting it up, or some other hormonal imbalance, than anything approaching FACT. :pissed off:

My experience:

I have completed almost 30,000K since I got my car last August.
I have stalled it a few times, and also made the mistake on a few occasions (including last night) of taking it out of the garage and turning it off, then getting back in and restarting (all when cold - and I am in Canberra, so this includes -- as last night -- sub-zero temp). No stalling problems! Am currently on "E" flash, so can't yet judge "G", which is happening next week.

My fuel economy over 30,000K is rock solid long term average, all driving conditions of 11.8L/100K -- log books to prove and will post new charts soon -- well within MA's stated claim. Includes 'spirited driving'. And, yes, if you do a lot of 'spirited' driving, there's no way you will average 12.6 which Mazda quotes -- rotaries drink when pushed. I knew that, my dealer told me, everyone should have been aware of at least that much when they made the purchasing decision.

Apart from this thread, and looking elsewhere in the Australian Forum, I have only seen 3 flooding complaints. Yes, it sucks if it happens, and if Mazda Assist doesn't come to the party complain, complain, complain!! But the number is not statistically significant of any major problem with the 8 or the Renesis engine, and everything I have experienced about this motor only serves to make me more impressed with rotary technology. It deserves awards, as does any major innovation where weight decreases and power increases at the same time.

I could say more but I choose not too

...and I didn't see pepe's before mine -- our posts crossed, but it appears there is consensus in Canberra!!
