What's a fair price to pay for a used RX8?

So I've been shopping around for RX8s for a bit.

I found a few at the dealership, there is an 05 which is GT 6MT with Sunroof no nav and ~18-19K km, they were asking $28700, a little to rich for my blood (max budget of 25K before taxes), so I asked them if I paid straight cash how much they could let it go for, they gave me a price for $26990 which is still too much for me.

So I left, not really wanting to deal anymore for the day. I really appreciate the sales guy for doing all he could do though, even though he was trying to say things like "it's only a little more than your budget for a great car" when to me it's not a "little" more to me.

They have two other RX8s both 04s both around the 40K km mark one with a sunroof one without, both 6MT GTs.

The one with sunroof is listed at 24990, and the one without is listed at 24490.

Now I'm more interested in the one with a sunroof, I don't want to pay the full 24990, so I was wondering would 23500-24000 be a fair price to pay?

Thanks

I'm no expert at used cars. But it goes without saying that your best bargain will always be with avoiding the middle man (the dealership) and finding a person who will sell it directly to you. Some sellers still have the warranty so you would be protected by any possible engine failure.

In all honesty this forum is a great place to start looking. Use the search function and check at what price and mileage cars have sold at in the past. I have come across many.

Let us know what the search function brings across

try searching "FS rx8"

I tried that, most of the cars from the USA, even with the strong dollar after shipping, after taxes, after my time and hassle, wouldn't be worth the difference compared to buying one here, not to mention they have more millage.

Looking in Canada using canada trader, finds that the dealership is one of the cheaper places to buy a used rx8 in the country.

Then searching on here has led me to find in canada many off lease cars which I don't wish to take over any leases, just buy them out.

try local craigslist. I've seen a few 8s on sale there. But if you can wait, then save up to get atleast an 05.

Hey man, I was dealing with Rod Gordon (Gerry's son).

Really nice guy, I'd like to buy a car from him, there are a few other dealers in the city with 04s although higher kms, they start at a much lower price, and can most likely be talked down some more.

Unfortunately the Renesis sort of lived up to the public's perception of the rotary as a finnicky and failure prone engine (whether well-founded or not). The market basically priced in the fact that you might have to change the engine on your own dime once the warranty runs out.

Climacus: So you are saying no more than 25K for the 2005 model? Hmm okay, That's what we offered, still waiting for a call back, I went to go look at other RX8s that are private sale, still haven't made any offers yet though.

A quick search on Ebay shows buy it now prices for 17, 500 USD.

Thats a far cry from 25K.
You dont pay to ship the car, just fly down and drive it back. Taxes? Well you pay GST/PST if you buy it in the US, or Canada. You will be hit with a duty, but not 7K worth of duty.

Quick search on ebay shows: The cars under 20K CND buy it now are both high milage, and autos.

The ones that are decent milage is $22500 buy it now (I convert everything into CND). I'm pretty sure my time + plane ticket + driving it back is worth more than 2500.

That's not to say I haven't considered the US an option, I do consider it a very good option, just haven't found anything that would make me want to fly down there and check it out first, and then maybe if all goes well buy it, and drive it back.

Our economy would indicate that the 8's current resale value is exactly what it should be. Weird. I guess nobody consulted you.

You should be able to find a car below 22k. There are a couple on www.Hebdo.net.

MazdaJeff: That seems to be the same as Canada trader...the ones for under 22K either are GSs, in Bad condition (there is a local GT for 20K, with 10k km, that needs major body work) or have super high millage.

o/t: Are the 04 transmissions more prone to shreading syncros than the 05+ models? did they change anything with the transmission?

Just remember if you buy a US car, it'll be very hard to resell them in Canada. When I was looking for my car, I passed on all the US car even though I could get some funky colors like dark green.

This will be less of an issue if you plan on hanging onto your car until all the warranties run out and it's only worth a couple grand. The upside to buying Canadian cars is that most of the early owners bought the super-extended 160,000km warranty from Mazda, the peace of mind is worth something.
