As a previous owner of a Mustang 5.0 it is more complicated than just nitrous and a blower. Out of the factory the car only made 180 RWHP. http://dssracing.com/ is a good place to start for that path.
Cheapest way is anything carbureted to avoid the costs of an ECU. If you had the deal of the century on an LS1 w/ ECU then that would be the way to go. If I am not mistaken the LS1 can go up to 600HP before major work has to be done to the block itself.
Or just hang around autotrader or ebay long enough and buy someone elses money pit on the cheap. 500HP mustangs can be had there for 6k-8k all day long.
03-04 cobra, they come stock super charged and with 390hp at the flywheel. with exhuast, smaller blower pully, cold air intake, and tuning that car is well into the 400whp range. Kenne Bell blower upgrade for $4-$7k depending on what you want and now you're talking anywhere from 500whp to 700whp. doing any car with the GM LS series motor is good too. LS1: 350hp, LS2: 400hp, LS6: 405hp, LS7: 500hp.
Buy a cheap american V8. Add LOTS of nitrous. there is your 500 hp.
And when it goes up in flames . . . film it and put a link here . . . I love seeing american crap cars on fire.

And for those bashing drag racing have you ever even been in a car that produces 500HP or even 1000HP???
500HP cars built right will just push you back in the seat. 1000HP cars are on a whole different level. I think that the only rush from speed that can top that is maybe a crotch rocket.
For the record I've only been in 3 cars pushing around 1000HP. Both had a custom built chassis. One was a hotrod, I think he said it was a 1940 Willy. It made 750ish HP and had a chevy engine. Been a while so I can't remember the details. The other was a 1100HP Nova. It was blown with a big block.
My friend had a 1969 Camaro SS. All engine it made 600HP and was in show condition. He traded that car for an S2000. His dad gave it to him for his 16th birthday. Unfortunetly its the type of car that is made for either the garage or the track. It would over heat easily. It was made to go 1/4 mile at a time.
Anyways, its neat to be in a car that makes so much power it shakes violently.
