This is funny.. the past few days I've posted that the harder I drive, it seems like I'm getting better gas mileage, and the harder I try to save gas by driving economically, the more it guzzles it.

Well with that in mind I have pretty much abandoned "econodriving". It's such a relief too..

Anyway tonight on my way home from class, my tank was a notch abelow mid-point. I revved high and ran the car hard and did some spirited driving for a minute or so, and I noticed my tank was now back to midpoint.

And it stayed at mid-point, for at least the next 15 miles or so.

It's almost like I'm PRODUCING gas! haha

anyway does anyone have the problem of uneven gas gauge? Like you run the car hard and the gas doesn't really dip for a long time, and then later that day, you get in and after a few miles of normal driving it has dipped down 2 notches...


Overall the average MPG is consistent with the rest of the fill-ups, however the rate of which the gas is shown used on the fuel gauge shows gas being used up at a somewhat erratic pace. Don't know if it's really an accurate measurement of the gas, or if the fuel gauge is not very accurate all the time, or could it be that gas simply gets "trapped (baffle)" and doesn't equalize until later.

I've noticed the same thing a little - my gas needle moves back up sometimes when I am driving.

This will fit in the paper right beside the other headlines

"RX-8 fishes drowning child from well."

"RX-8 wins the war on terror."

And my personal favorite:

"RX-8 enters California recall election."

 

doesn't this happen wit other cars too, sometimes??

 

I"ve posted about this before. Glad someone else is noticing it. I definitely see my needle go backwards when I redline the car. It's cool - like a little reward for driving it the way it should be driven.

It doesn't seem to improve gas mileage, but it doesn't hurt it when I drive hard either. It doesn't seem to matter how I drive, I always get 22/23 mpg.

 

You guys careful now, the gas might just overflow out of the car and demage your paint work:D

 

Just a guess, but i'm betting it's because of where the gas level sender mechanism is in the tank, IE, when you accelerate, all the gas goes to the back of the tank or something like that. I've noticed some similar activity in my 93 miata, although I think its a purely manual set up. Is the 8's gauge manual or electronic? I would guess electronic.

It can't be president as it wasn't born in this country, and it's not 35:D It could be governor of California, but it would be over qualified for the job - at least looking at the current crop of candidates.

I knowthis is an old post but I was lookingfor since I remember that I read this happening to someone else on here before.

This problemhappened to me twice this week. My Rx8 gas gauge was at exactly 3/4 tank full notch on Monday when I started it up and after about 3 minutes of driving I started speeding and hit redline twice. When I eventually stopped and was at a light I looked at the gas gauge and the nozzle went up to the notch right above the 3/4 line! The same exact thing happened to me yesterday when my car was at the 1/4 line and after speeding the nozzle went 1 notch up above the 1/4 line instead of down.

What is really happening here when this happens? Is the gas gauge realizingthat theres actually more gas left in the tank than it thinks there is? Or is all the gasoline flying all over the place in the tank causing the gauge to think there is more gas left than there really is? I am confused here.

 

mostly mine just goes down, fast. It does go up a hair sometimes, mostly noticeable the 1/2 level. But the light has never gone out after going on!

 

I don't know if the fuel gauge is going up but somewhere between 3000 and 3500 I went from avg. 18 to 22 mpg. I love it.
