Well, it's a rotary logo anyhow

This isn't a RX-8 logo, but it's a logo I plan to have made for my good old RX-7. What do you guys think?

Very nice job. I like the way you did the RX - turning the "x" into a seven also.

... IMHO (and being an art director/creative director) I'd lose both of those horizontal (beveled) bars above and below the RX7 letters.

They really don't add to your design of the rotary motif ... keep it simple and clean.

I'd also try a version where you try slightly rounding the corner edges of the RX7 to match the organic curved shape of the rotary together with the "X/7" (I can see you were following the italic "blocky" "mazda rotary engine" letters for style, but maybe for this slightly rounded cornered version a handwriten style might be better suited for the "mazda rotary engine" letters)

I'd also try and match the slant/angle of the "z" from the above mazda logo typeface - it could help balance your "7," being a part of the "x" so the right will gain alittle more negative space between the middle of the "X" to help with the readability of the "7" and also by changing the angle clockwise - this will make the negative space between the "R & X" alittle smaller and the bottom space between the "X" a little bigger ... which should all help with improving readability.

Good luck and most of all have fun!

Now it that makes no sense at all to you - welcome to the wonderful world of graphic design ... :D

now see, i was about to steal that logo and use it as my avatar- but now that bwayout has pointed out all of the problemms with it, i definetly don't like it anymore.
just kidding that is pretty good work. i think bwayout has a point though about the horizontal bars and matching the slant of the "x" with the "z" in mazda. great work really

Cool OK, where's everyones layouts & designs?

DO we need to make this a real deadline! We don't want to get the client mad at us ... (sorry I forgot that this isn't where I work)

If only I had the time ... I'd love to play around with designing type treatments for the RX-8 or any car ... except I'm here at work (reading this addictive forum)

Exclamation well...

Actually, I've got no real art background to speak of, but I've always mucked about with logos and the like. This particular piece came about during a particularly boring shift at work
I've got another version that I made in contrast that's appended to the bottom of the posted image if anyone's interested.

I tried matching the slant between the 'x' and 'z' but I couldn't get it to look particularly good. I think that I reached a happy compromise however. I ditched the bars (though I was rather fond of them ). I also moved the text around a touch. I couldn't find a good font to do any 'handwritten' lettering, so I left it as is. If anyone knows where I can get a font simliar to the Miata lettering, please let me know.

Well, did you ever think about a career change in the exciting world of graphic design? Seriously, all you need is a portfolio of your best work - no real schooling is necessary, (but it doesn't hurt ).

You'll find that's always the case in the real world. Your favorite part always seems to end up on the chopping block ... Believe me, I've been there!

I can't answer that one, but there's a lot of free and shareware fonts on the net for Macs and PC's. If you've got the time, there's a ton of sites to search and check out. Here's one site to get you started: http://www.1001freefonts.com/

I like your new top version, the best ... but, I missed your original slightly rotated rotary - it had added some fun energy to the design ... (and sorry its very hard for me to stop being an art director, so please dont take this critique personal) but I'd move up the mazda type so it has the same space that "rotary engine" has below your RX7

all in all, keep up the great work! :D

It's only realy important that you're happy with it! I'm caught up in things like reproduction and reducing issues that affect readability - that I have to deal with everyday...
