Just Saw Tokyo Drift (There will be spoilers)

In that interview Justin Lin gave where he said he wanted more time to work on the script, I wish he had gotten his wish. The whole movie seemed like a 2 hour advertisement for Veilside, from the kits on the cars to the name on the seats.

I'll start with the most important thing to us first:
I seriously doubt anyone's going to think too much of the RX8 in the movie. There's only one scene that actually shows what the car is. That kind of pissed me off actually as there's several scenes scattered through the movie showing off what's under the hood of these cars and they never bother to show a rotary off, neither the RX8 or the RX7. There's even a scene where they pop the hood of the 8, but only so Neela can argue with her friend that she's a good driver despite what the computer hooked up to the ecu says. I think I counted 3 RX8s in the movie. There's only one sceene where Neela drives and it's mostly CG and at night so you don't get to see if the car can really do anything. Like I said, I don't think the movie hurt it, yet I doubt it'll help the car out a whole lot either.

Bow Wow's character was actually quite tollerable. He was easier to accept than the plot, and his car isn't a drift car, so I have no problem with him. Han, the owner of the Veilside RX7 I didn't mind either. Anyone that'd just toss me the keys to their S15 to drift for the first time and then give me an EVO after I wreck it is cool with me. DK seemed a little too overdramatic.

I think there are tons of great shots of cars drifting in this movie sitting on the cutting room floor in some studio because most of them aren't here. There are a few good scenes with the Evo after Sean gets a feel for drifting, and there's one really great shot of it drifting with the RX7, and I did enjoy the RX7 drifting circles around the Skyline (I'll have to try that trick sometime and see if it works). The cars also sound like they're supposed to sound too, you can hear the revs and pops you would normaly hear at a drift meet. One cool thing is when they're racing through downtown Tokyo, it looks like all real driving with them weaving through traffic and sliding through turns, unlike the CG in the begining and the "group night drifting" in the middle. My one gripe is I wanted to see the Mustang vs 350Z for real not CGed with some real bits cut in. Another thing is in actual drift racing you're not supposed to try and pass the lead car unless they take a bad line and you line give you the ability to cleanly pass, but here they have it so whoever finishes first wins. Now I know I'll be bombarded with even more noobs on drift days saying "oh man he needs to pass" or "how did that guy win when he didn't pass" or something to that effect.

As far as the plot and story goes, it's still brainless but for once more beleavible than its predicessors (as I can't imagine how modded Civics with neons went unnoticed by cops while robbing semi trucks in the first one, and why a drug lord would higher flashy street racers to deliver his money in the second). What I didn't like is that these kids are in high school in the movie and I doubt any of the actors are less than 23. Even if a few were they certainly don't look the part. I wish they'd have come up with a better reason to be in Japan for the "Drift Chapter" of the F&F franchise, but it did put drifting up on the big screen. It made sense in it's own way, and they did give a decent explination of why the cops didn't chase them. All in all I give the movie a B-. There is much room for improvement, but I was entertained. I look foward to the special features on the DVD release as there should be some of that cutting room floor footage I refered to in there. BTW the movie did manage to find a link with the previous two films.

GIGANTIC MOVIE SPOILER: (highlight text to read)
I don't know how I feel about Vin Diesel making that cameo at the end. How the hell did he end up in Tokyo since he was in Mexico after the credits of the first F&F? I gues this may mean a 4th installment with Vin back at the helm. And a little tear started to form from my eye when the Veilside got wrecked and blew up, not so much for Han, but that was a waste of a sexy car.

End spoiler.

That's all I've got for now and I need sleep.

I think I would give it a c+. It wasn't anything special, I think some of the CG parts, especially the overhead views, looked the coolest and kinda wish the whole movie was done in that style.

Would have been better if the main character was in college and ran to Japan to escape the cops instead of the story line that was used.

That 7 was badass though. The rest of the cars were not really anything that special though and who cares about yet another 60's mustang.

Best part about the movie was my club drive the next day and knowing my 8 was faster than the one in the movie anyway.

That rx-7 is nuts $11,000 body kit and it sounded bridge ported. there was a little too much CG especially when Lucas Black was "training" and drifting on the highway. It looked really cool though. I also enjoyed some of the psuedo-realism at the begginnig of the movie. He jumped in a car and crashed it like 8 times. Which, if you have never drifted is how it would play out.

Ah, that chick from the first scene w/the Viper is still ringing bells in my head. "Why don't you race for me" People in the movie started laughing out loud!

I was beyond disappointed when they popped the hood to Neela's 8 and she didn't mention the rotary. I MEAN COME ON, THAT WAS SUCH A PRIME TIME TO MENTION IT!!!!!

Personally, the GF and I had to drink at an astounding rate to make the movie tolerable.

With that out of the way, there is a link at mazdaspeed about the RX-7 and the movie. Apparently almost all of the drifting scenes are actually performed. The CG is mostly the landscape and such (shows how far we've come since Toys that it is getting harder to tell). Also, the RX-7 had its ultra-expensive custom red/black interior SPRAY PAINTED black to match the new exterior. That particular vehicle was Veilside's grand champion at a Tokyo car show, and unlike the RX-8 with 20" lead wheels and other "mods" the RX-7 could go like hell in real life.

If you are reading this thread and moaning, just go get drunk, suspend disbelief, and see it. Then it r0x0rz!

I actually thought it was the best of the FF series. It wasn't great. I wouldn't go see it again, but I found it tolerable w/o the alcohol.

The best line of the movie was when the stupid cheerleader goes, "I thought you loved me!"

What an awful movie. At least some of the cars were nice to look at.
