Heater Performance is poor and cabin temps
While none of this is exactly new, some RX-8 (S1 and S2) with age have seen poor car heater performance, either quite cold when it should be very hot.
The issue is almost always a semi blocked Heater Core (mini radiator core), while some owners have gone the long way around in removing the Heater Core and almost all of the cars Dash and HVAC unit, and or replacing the heater core because of a leak or severe blockage, there is an easier way to possibly resolve your issue
IF it is only a blockage and not a heater core leak or hose leak (which usually can mean the Heater Core out anyway).
Some owners are using the common 'garden hose' with tap water to flush out the cars heater core while still installed in HVAC. While this may work, what concerns is long term contamination of your cars cooling system (coolant) as any tap water has mineral properties which can be, and usually is, corrosive to any alloy engine (parts) longer term.
The current Mazda CX-5 is also having Heater Performance Issues (not getting cabin hot in winter) with Mazda Europe releasing a MMC approved TSB showing Dealers how to capture and recycle coolant and or distilled/de-mineralized water to flush through the HVAC system and heater radiator core a number of times with a common new and clean circulation immersible electric water pump (fish pond type) with two large clean plastic buckets or barrel drums, a few metres of new water hose, some grocery store 'citric acid' and a few gallons (10 litres) of demineralized clear and clean water.
All self explanatory in this TSB and definitely the best method (IMO) so one avoids contamination your RX-8 cooling system when a core flushing in required..
While not always a 100% fix, it is the best way to view the old coolant for mud, deposits, bits of metal or solidified/crystallized glycol.
Edit: Please don't confuse this 'fix' with another separate but very similar heater issue on early Series 1 RX-8's and the interiors Climate Control Position Switch electrics as being defective.

I did the hose flush thing several times (it only worked for a little while afterwards) then decided to use a cleaning product product designed for the purpose . Been fine ever since . Can't help think the distilled water idea is OTT ... but i guess Mazda have to cover themselves .
