'H' Pattern Dash Crack Over Passenger AIR BAG

Contrary to some Mazda Dealer Parts advice the Passenger Side Dash Cover IS available as a OEM replacement part WITHOUT having to purchase the Complete Assembly which includes the Air Bad Module....Air Bag Module with Dash Cover is well over $1000.

The new Dash Cover only is approximately one third of that cost.

Obviously you must carefully remove your good existing Air Bag Module and re-bolt it to your new OE Dash Cover.

Here are the Part Numbers..

FEY1-57-K5X Air Bag Door Cover LEFT HAND DRIVE

F1Y1-57-K5X Air Bag Door Cover RIGHT HAND DRIVE

Considering that part of the Dashboard are the same, then I can only see the same happening.

Ummmm, you are checking the Part Number for a RIGHT Hand Drive car.

Mazda on-line Parts like ALL North American Mazda Dealers do not stock Right Hand Drive EXCLUSIVE Parts, just like dealers in Australia does not stock Left Hand Drive EXCLUSIVE parts, WHY WOULD THEY ?

I had the same cracks happen on my 2009 RX-8. Car only has 24,000 miles. I gave the dealer the part number listed above, but they said according to Mazda this part isn't for the 2009 and up RX-8. Any ideas? If anyone has any documentation showing that this part is also for the 2009+ I'd appreciate a copy. Not a big deal for me, as the dealer is excellent and is replacing both the dash and airbag, but figured any documentation might help the dealer with others down the road. They just didn't want to install only the dash cover since their computers are saying it isn't compatible on the 2009.

If you can PM me your FULL VIN, I can look into it, there was a ''one way only' change from 'a' 2008 production date, and Mazda does not list a separate cover from that date, however, I see no reason as to why the cover only will not still fit.

I am tipping (can't verify without VIN #) that you have one of the earlier covers anyway which was also used on very late Series 1's.

These were not supposed to crack (the later ones).

Sent you a PM with my VIN. The cover/airbag assembly they are replacing it with is the FE87-57-K70C. Is this the newer one that should not crack? Thanks again for all your help.

Well you are the first S2 I have heard about with a split and what surprises me even more is you have the very latest and last parts iteration...I guess your car must be out in the heat and cold a lot??

There were actually some very late S1's which had the S2 Air Bag covers (dashes), so while I can not confirm, I will stand by the EPC as I interpret it and say I can not see why the cover meant ONLY for S1 will not fit your S2, as the expensive assembly including air bag module is the same from late S1 to S2.

I hope you get what I mean...I go on a bit..

I am surprised that yours has cracked, I guess I and other S2 owners also have something to look forward to..

In other words, I can not see that the cover only will not fit and be OK, perhaps you and your Mazda Dealer will have to find out...use the part numbers I have earlier listed for left hand drive 8's..

Good luck..

Well I guess they are doing it under warranty for you??

I hate to tell you this but it is exactly the same part number FE87-57-K70C02 that was original assembled in your S2...it has not changed since production...retails for over $1200.

The RX-8 is in the garage when I am home, and when outside I use a sunshade. I don't have the windows tinted, but may get that done in the near future. So perhaps that will help. I do live in FL, so it does get hotter here than other places. I was really hoping that my car had the old dash cover before they made the change to the newer one, so I guess I can expect the new one to start cracking in about 4 years. On the plus side, I may have a new rotary by then (assuming the 16x is out by then).

Nope, car is 8 months out of warranty. The service manager at my dealer is awesome and said he got it taken care of. I'm guessing it was because my car has very low miles and I have bought 2 new Mazda's in the past 4 years, plus all maintenance is done by the dealer. He needed pictures of the cars exterior (to show pristine condition) and the odometer.

Well I just noticed this happened to me yesterday. 2009 R3. Really sucks, and was hoping this was fixed for the S2's. I am out of warranty, and my dealer is terrible so I know they won't lift a finger to help.

On no..me too..I thought this was fixed!!

I would be getting straight onto Mazda USA (MNAO), and report this and see if they might do 'goodwill',
then when they ask about 'have you been to a/your Mazda Dealer, tell them they have been 'uncooperative'.

IMO at the very least Mazda JAPAN should be offering replacements @ cost (reduced) price for cars less than 5 years old..

I just found this crack in my Aus delivered 2008 R3 today. A quick search found this thread and it looks like 5 years is what the dash will take with normal use.

I dont live anywhere with extreme heat, and I garage it and use a windscreen cover when parking elsewhere.

It's about 6 inches long now... Hopefully vinyl conditioner can stop it getting any worse.

Exclamation Replacement

Hi,

May I inquire if you could help with with the 2005 Mazda RX8 A04A.
I need to get a replacement part for the car. The dashboard on the passenger side (it’s a right hand drive) has some cracks on it.

Please let me know where I could find one in Australia.

Thanks.

RIGHT HAND DRIVE Series 1 (and Series II) Passenger Air Bag Dash Cover

Series 1 (and Series II) Passenger Air Bag Dash Cover, if you want genuine can only be purchased through a Mazda Parts Dealer.

Genuine Mazda Part Number is for Right Hand Drive COVER ONLY..
F1Y1-57-K5X
The internal Passenger Air Bag Deployment Module/Drum must be removed from the old unit and carefully installed on the back of the new replacement.

WARNING NOTE: IT APPEARS MAZDA MAY HAVE REVERTED BACK TO NOT SUPPLYING THESE PASSENGER AIR BAD DASH COVERS ONLY, AND SUPPLIED
NEW ONLY WITH THE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE COVER AND AIR BAG MODULE ASSEMBLY.
OBVIOUSLY TRY HUNTING AROUND AND LOCATING A NEW COVER ONLY SPARE PART.

Take the part number (s) for the RIGHT HAND DRIVE RX-8 and call a few Mazda Dealer Spare Parts Departments in your State for the local price and parts availability.
