My third 8
i bought the last r3 {red} in okla, two questions. sealant or wax? and how long before i put it on? . i did search but didnt find an answer. i do seem to be search impaired. family thinks i am impaired for getting three of the same car, one after the other

The best way to search this forum:
RX-8 Club has tons of information on hand. And I mean tons. Literally. Add up the weight of everyone's brain, and it will be several tons. Collectively, we know more than any one dealership, tech, repair shop, or spec manual. However, as usual, the information doesn't all sit in one place, it doesn't sit in one head, and we have our idiots, our morons, our ********, our kids, our jerks, and our literary incompetents. Just like any forum. Fortunately, we have relatively fewer of those than most other car communities out there. But they still exist.
We also have a Search button, and a Search function for the board, but it isn't very good. It removes words that it sees as common or two short, but are a critical part of the search. It doesn't allow for search by relevancy, as in real relevancy. You mostly have to do alot of hunting and pecking in the search results to come up with what you might be looking for.
Add the two above issues together, and you can easily take all day to find only bad information.
But I have good news! You can improve your results and search speed by up to 15% by switching to Google!
As in Google.com.
Go to Google.com, and in the search box, type: site:rx8club.com
Then a space.
Then start typing what you are looking for.
Like this:

Your Google search results will be ONLY from this forum, and it will use all the power and intelligence of the best search engine in the world.

Sealant - Gives you a glassy shell over your paint, it is relatively newer technology wise, and is VERY popular lately in the car detailing scene
Wax - Gives you a shiney gloss over your paint, been around a lot longer, and is a popular method across old school detailers
is there a difference? not really, why choose one over the other? preference, one is more matte but gives your paint a "glass shell-like" look (sealant) while the other gives you a liquid wet looking shine (wax)
When can you do it? Anytime you want, usually they are done once a season at the start of the season. Apply after a wash and preferably after a claybar. Machined applications are best as they are more uniform and tend to get deeper coverage, but hand applications work fine as well.

thanks for the education. my reason for asking was that my last 8 got hammered in a hail storm . new sheet metal and paint all around. the paint and body people told me sealant should be used on all clear coat. however they didn't put the car back together too well. i was some what leery of their judgement

New paint should be left to breath and settle for i think 90 days before you do any type of machine polishing and waxing.

parts not matching up right, shakes , rattles . in some cases screws not put back in , this would be the under cover for the engine. some of the rubber around the windows and doors . things i didn't hear or see for a few weeks or months .

Sealant is a bit harder to apply properly but will last, 3-4-5x longer than even the best syntetic wax, put it on a soon as possible to lessen the risk of "scealing" impurity on your paint.
edits: 90 days afeter painted? your car as been painted a looong time ago before you take possession.
and you can apply a hand wax over the scealant a month or 2 after and keep reapplying every season for the best protection

@Wazsup_shorty: New paint needs care, because the paint hasn't been painted a long time before he got it. He mentioned he had hail damage, im assuming heavy damage, and sheet metal and paint. Not-so fresh paint, maybe. We don't know the time line of when the car was painted.
@Lpcokie: It would be best to go to the body shop that painted the car in the first place to know how to take care. Certain procedures may invalid a new paint job's warranty. Polishing a clear coat, for example - they might not have a clear coat on the car but a straight enamel finish - the clear coat and color is mixed together. Worse comes to worse, they can say - do whatever with it. But if you have a warranty, i'd get that in writing.
I was looking to paint my rx-8 black or Shinka Black Cherry.
